The Southern Air Temple

Days later after we left the village, we stopped at a beautiful small island to get some rest. Our main destination is the northern water time in the North Pole, but Aang wants to go see the southern air temples where he use to live. It was early in the morning and Aang, Katara and I were up and ready while Sokka refuses to wake up. I was walking along the water line and started looking at my reflection. "You're not apart of the water tribe. I can tell just by look at you. Amber eyes, pale skin." Zuko's works rang in my ears. I don't belong in these water tribe clothing. I look like a Fraud. An outcast. Trying to be someone I'm not.

"Wait till you see it, Katara." I turn my attention to aang and Katara. "The air temple is one of the most beautiful places in the world." Aang tightens the rope around Appa's horns.

"Aang, I know you're excited, but it's been a hundred years since you've been home." I then walked away from my reflection and sat next to Appa in the ground.

"That's why I'm so excited!"

"Aang," I said from below. "That's not what she meant."

"It's just that a lot can change in all that time."

"I know, but I need to see it for myself." Aang then flys down from Appa and walks over to Sokka who was still asleep. "Wake up, Sokka. Air temple here we come!" Sokka groans, lifts up is head slightly and turns away from Aang.

"Sleep now. Temple later." Sokka continues to snore but Aang picks up a stick and walks over to him once more.

"Sokka! Wake up!" Aang then rubs the stick all over Sokka's sleeping bag. "There's a prickle snake in your sleeping bag!" Sokka immediately stands up and hops around in his sleeping bag.

"Ah! Get it off! get it off!" He then fell face first into the ground. Katara and I laughed at him.

"Great. You're awake. Let's go!" We all gathered our things and head up onto Appa. "Yip, Yip!" Appa takes off flying to our next location. A couple hours went by and I was laying down in on the saddle next to Sokka looking up at the clouds. Suddenly I hear his stomach growl.

"Hey, stomach, be quiet, all right? I'm trying to find ya some food."

"You talking to your stomach now?" I asked with a small laugh. He rolled his eyes at me and reaches for a bag. He turns it upside down but no food came out.

"Hey! Who ate all the blubbered seal jerky? I bet it was you, Aya!" I sat up to face him.

"It wasn't me, I swear!"

"Don't play dumb with me, Aya. I know how much you love jerky!"

"Oh. That was food?" Aangs says as he guides Appa. "I used it to start the campfire last night. Sorry."

"You what?!" Sokka and I said it unison.

"Aw. No wonder the flames smelled so good." I patted Sokka on the back to let him know that everything was going to be okay.

"The pistols mountain range!" Aang yells as we approach large pointy mountains. "We're almost there!" I crawled over to the front of the settle and see Katara and Aang sitting together as we fly closer and closer to the temple.

"Aang, before we get to the temple," Katara says to him in a concerned tone. "I want to talk to you about the Airbenders."

"What about them?"

"Well... I just want you to be prepared for what you might see. The fire nation is ruthless. They killed my mother, and they could have done the same to your people."

"But Aya was part of the fire nation. Just because no one has seen an Airbender doesn't mean the fire nation killed them all. They probably escaped."

"I know it's hard to accept."

"You don't understand, Katara. The only why to get to an Airbender temple is in a flying bison, and I doubt the fire nation has any flying bison. Right, Appa?" Appa then, growls in response to Aang. "Yip, Yip!" Appa then flys straight up the mountain. I quickly grabbed the settle and I feel a pair of arms wrap around my torso. I look back and see Sokka.

"What? Do you want to fly off and die?" I laughed and rolled my eyes at him.

"There it is, the southern air temple." Sokka looks over my shoulder and we were all amazed by the beautiful sight before us.

"Aang, it's amazing!" Katara says.

"We're home, buddy. We're home." I felt a tight squeeze around my torso, pushing all of the air out of my lungs. I look back at Sokka and he was amazed by the sight.

"S-Sokka.... you c-can let go of m-me now-w..." he quickly let go of me and I took a deep breath in and out.

"Sorry, Aya." I gave him a smile and laughed.

"You never change." He smiles. Appa lands softly on the mountain and we all start walking towards the top. Aangs was rushing up the mountain while Katara and Sokka were following behind slowly. I was in the very back using my fire bending to make a small fire ball to toss back and forth between my hands.

"So where do I get something to eat?" Says as he hold his stomach and makes a grouchy look on his face.

"You're lucky enough to be one of the first outsiders to ever visit an Airbender temple, and all you can think about is food?"

"I'm just a simple guy with simple needs."

"He's not wrong." Katara gives me an angry look. "What?" She turns her head and finally caught up to Aang.

"So that's where my friends and I would play airball," he points to a arena with a bunch on wooden poles and goals. "And over there is where the bison would sleep. And..." he sighs. I extinguished my fire ball and walked next to Sokka.

"What's wrong?" Katara asked him.

"This place used to be full of monks and lemurs and bison. Now there's just a bunch of weeds. I can't believe how much things have changed." We all estranged sad looks to one another and knew what to do.

"So, uh, this airball game—How do you play?" Sokka says as he walked up to Aang. His face lit up and had a smirk on his face.
___________

Sokka was standing in front of the goal on the left side and Aang was on the other side using his Airbending to spin the ball. Aang then throws the ball in the air and out of no where, kicks which sent out a wave sending the ball flying. It pinged off of the pillars and hits Sokka in the gut, making him and the ball threw the goal and land in the snow. Aang begins to laugh.

"Aang 7, Sokka 0!" He yells cheerfully. I walk over to Sokka and crouched down next to him.

"I think he beat you....again." I say with a giggle.

"Making him feel better is putting me in a world of hurt." Sokka then pushes himself up and immediately his eyes grew wide. He crawls over to the slope of a hill just a few feet away. "Katara, Aya, check this out." We both look at each other and walked over only to discover an old fire nation helmet. The colors were faded and had multiple crakes on the surface.

"Fire nation..." she says in a cold tone.

"We should tell him." I said as I crouched down and examined the old helmet.

"Aang! There's something you need to see." Aang lightly jogs over to the three of us as he juggles the ball using his airbending.

"Okay." As I kept looking at the helmet, I see Katara wave her arms up and out of nowhere, snow fell onto Sokka and I, covering us and the helmet completely. "What is it?" I lifted my head above the snow.

"Uh... Just a new waterbending move I learned."

"Nice one. But enough practicing. We have a whole temple to see." Aang then walks away from us still with a smile on his face. Sokka then stands up and shoved the snow off of himself.

"You know, you can't protect him forever." Katara then walks away to follow Aang. Sokka Signs and looks back at me and smiles. "You're still laying there? You've got to be freezing by now." I laughed.

"You're kidding, right?" He looks at me with a confused look. I then used my firebending by melting the snow with my body heat. I then stood up and started walking after Katara and Aang.

"Oh, right. Fire bender..."
_______

Once we caught up with the others, we reached an archway with a small water fountain on the outside of the building. Aang quickly runs in while the three of us talked outside.

"Katara, firebenders were here. You can't pretend they weren't." Sokka explains to his little sister as she slowly follows Aang.

"I can for Aang's sake." Sokka and I caught up and walk along side with her. "If he finds out that the fire Nation invaded his home, he'll be devastated."

"Katara," I put my hand on her shoulder. "He'll be even more devastated if he finds out on his own. It's better to tell him then to let him find out on his own."

"Hey, guys!" We all turned our attention to Aang as he was standing by a statue of a old monk. "I want you to meet somebody."

"Whose that?" Sokka asks.

"Monk Gyatso, the greatest Airbender in the world. He taught me everything I know." Aang then bows to to statue for a while then he lifted up his head and looks at his old teacher.

"You must miss him." Katara says as she puts a hand on his shoulder and looks at the statue herself.

"Yeah." Aang then begins to walk away and through the arch.

"Where are you going?" I ask.

"The air temple sanctuary. There's somebody I'm ready to meet." We all look at each other with confused faces but then follows him without question.

"But, Aang," Katara says as we approach a large wooden door with tree branches surrounding it. The door had pipes and cylinders like art. It was truly amazing. "No one could have survived in there for a hundred years."

"It's not impossible. I survived in the iceberg for that long."

"He's not wrong." I say with surprise.

"Good point."

"Katara, whoever's in there might help me figure out this Avatar thing."

"And whoever's in there might have a medley of delicious cured meats." Sokka eyes twinkled as his mouth begins to water just by the thought.

"Or maybe some delicious jerky because someone threw ours in the fire." I say as I give Aang a dirty look but all he does was smile innocently. Sokka then runs to the door and struggles to get it open but then sits down in defeat.

"I don't suppose you have a key."

"The key, Sokka, is Airbending." We all stepped back behind Aang as he takes a deep breath and blows air from his hands into the two large openings causing the three blue cylinders to turn around making the door open. Once it opens, all we saw was pitch black. "Hello? Anyone home?" Aang then walks in and the three of us followed. The closer we got, we can see several stone statues of people in a spiral. We all walked pasts some statues, curious of what this all means.

"Statues?" We bear Sokka yell. "That's it? Where's the meat?" I then patted his shoulder as he made a sad face and I walked over to Katara and Aang.

"Who are all these people?" She asked as they stop and look at one.

"I'm not sure. But it feels like I know them somehow. Look! That one's an Airbender!"

"And this one's a waterbender. They're lined up in a pattern. Air, water, watch, and fire." I walked down the line till I came across the last statue in the line. He was a fire bender. Why can't things just go back to how things were before the war? Before the Fire nation became heartless and power hungry dictators. I don't want people looking at me and see another Heartless fire nation girl.

"That's the avatar cycle."

"Of course. They're avatars. All these people are your past lives, Aang."

"Wow! There's so many." Aang then walks over to me and stands in front of the fire bender statue. I turned my attention to the siblings as Sokka stands there with his arms crossed.

"Past lives? Katara, you really believe in that stuff?"

"It's true. When the avatar dies, he's reincarnated into the next nation in the cycle." I look at Aang and see that he is zoned out as he stares directly at the statue. Katara then walks over and starts shaking him. "Aang, snap out of it!"

"Huh?"

"Who is that?" I asked as I look at the statue.

"That's Avatar Roku, the Avatar before me." Sokka then walked up next to me.

"You were a fire bender? No wonder I didn't trust you when we first met." I then gave Sokka a dirty look. "Well, of course I trust you, Aya. You're the only good firebender out there." I then smile and rolled my eyes as we continued to look at the statue.

"There no writing. How do you know his name?" Katara askes him.

"I'm not sure. I just know it somehow." Sokka then groans and crosses is arms.

"You just couldn't get any weirder." All of the sudden we hear a strange sound coming from outside. We all quickly turn our heads and hide behind the statues. Katara and Aang were behind one and Sokka and I were behind the other. Of course it was no problem with Katara and Aang because they are both the youngest and Aang is the smallest. But Sokka had his hatchet out and was constantly pushing me.

"Sokka! Stop pushing me!" I whisper yelled at him but all he did was stick his tongue at me.

"Firebender. Nobody make a sound." Sokka whispers to Katara and Aang.

"You're making a sound." Katara whispered louder to her brother. But the three of us 'shh'ed her.

"That firebender won't know what hit him." Sokka then stands up and look over the corner with his hatchet in hand but he paused for a second. We all look over the statues and see a cute small lemur before us.

"Lemur!" Aang yells in excitement.

"Dinner." Sokka says as his mouth begins to water.

"Don't listen to him. You're gonna be my new pet."

"Not if I get him first!" Sokka and Aang both run to the Lemur but it got scared and started running away.

"Wait! Come back!"

"I want to eat you!" And just like that, they were gone. Katara and I just laughed as we saw the boys.

"Hey, are you okay?" I look over at Katara and see worry in her eyes for me.

"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"

"You've seen off ever since we found Aang."

"Off how?"

"Well you've been zoning out a lot lately and I hardly see you smile as much anymore. You can tell me what's wrong, Aya." I sighed and looked up at the statue of Avatar Roku.

"I feel like I don't belong..." Katara looks at me still confused of what I mean. "Like when I see myself in a reflection, I see a pale skinned girl with amber eyes in water tribe clothing. I'm a firebender from the fire nation. I don't belong in the water tribe with you or Sokka."

"Aya..." before Katara could say anything else, we see all the statues of the past avatars' eyes light up. "Aang!" We both rushed out of the room trying to find Aang. We saw huge smoke clouds in the sky and rushed over to the source. As we got closer, we see Sokka behind a piece of the broken wall. Katara come on one side of him and I took the other. We look out and see Aang was in his avatar form creating Huge winds all around us. "What happened!"

"He found out firebenders killed Gyatso!"

"Oh, no."

"It's his avatar spirit!" I say loudly so they could hear me over the winds. "He must have triggered it."

"I'm gonna try and calm him down." Katara then makes her way over to him.

"Well, do It before he blows us off the mountain!" Sokka as he hangs on tighter. We watch Katara make her way over to Aang but then Aang begins to rise up into the sky. Katara then reaches to grab a piece of the wall and Sokka and I Decided to get closer to Aang to try and help her calm him down.

"Aang, I know you're upset, and I know how hard it is to lose the people you love. I went through the same thing when I lost my mom. lol Gyatso and the other Airbenders May be gone, but you still have a family." Sokka and I both walked over to Katara and grabbed the same rock. "Aya, Sokka and I, we're your family now." Aang then begins to lower himself to the ground and the three of us have gotten right behind him. Once Aang was on the ground, we moved right next to him.

"Katara, Aya and I aren't gonna let anything happen to you. Promise." Katara then grabs his hand and Aang was no longer in his Avatar state and falls into Katara's arms.

"I'm sorry."

"It's alright, it wasn't your fault." I say as I kneel down on one knee.

"You were right, Katara. And if firebenders found this temple, that means they found the other ones, too. I really am the last Airbender." Katara hugs tightly and Sokka and I put a hand on his shoulder.
___________

We were all back in the statue room. Aang was looking at Avatar Roku with Katara, Sokka was standing close to the exit and I was sitting under a statue in the first row playing around with my throwing knives.

"Everything's packed. You ready to go?" I hear Katara say to Aang.

"How is Roku supposed to help me if I can't talk to him?"

"Maybe you'll find a way." We then hear the sand noise as we did earlier and looked by the entrance. We see the same lemur from before carrying food in his tiny hands. He runs over to Sokka and drops the food in front of him. Sokka then begins to eat everything faster then he can chew.

"Looks like you made a new friend, Sokka." I laughed as he eats.

"Can't talk. Must eat." The lemur then climbs up to Aang.

"Hey, little guy."
____________

"Katara, Aya, Sokka," Sokka and Katara we're packing the rest of the things and I was already on Appa. "Say hello to the newest member of our family."

"What are you gonna name him?" Katara asks as Sokka was about to take a bit of his fruit. But then the Lemur took it right out of his hands and begins to eat it.

"Momo." We all look at Sokka and see that he was in shock, so we all begin to laugh. We all finished getting are things together and made our way off the mountain. I was laying down look up at the stars till Katara taps my shoulder.

"Hey," I sat up and faced her. "What's up?"

"I just want to continue our conversation from earlier." I looked around and no one else was listening so I directed my attention back to her. "You are like family to Sokka and I. We see you as our big sister. But you shouldn't pretend to be a water tribe girl, you should be your own person."

"How do I do that?"

"I say that the first step, would be to get you out of those water tribe clothing." I smiled and gave Katara a hug. I finally felt like I belonged.
