"Oh, I don't know if we should play this one."
Jimin fiddled with the strings of his guitar as he stood in front of his microphone, eyebrows furrowed as he stared down at the lyrics on the page of the book in front of him.
He currently stood in the basement of the house Taehyung and Namjoon rented together. He could've lived here with them as well, but as much as he loved his bandmates, Taehyung was... to put it lightly, not the best roommate. He was too messy for Jimin's liking, and he used to throw one too many parties for Jimin to be alright with. He wasn't as bad now, but Jimin still didn't want to move out of the place he had made into his home.
They barely lived five minutes away, and their basement was the perfect place to practice, in comparison to Jimin's apartment - surrounded by neighbours on all sides.
"C'mon Jimin, please?" Taehyung whined, picking up the music sheet he had placed in front of him and scanning his eyes across the notes. "This is like, one of the best songs we've put together to date. You really gonna hide it just because of who it's about?"
Jimin shrugged, eyes not leaving the page as he scrutinized every single lyric on the page. He had written this song when him and Jungkook weren't exactly on the best terms, and those feelings definitely shone through the words he wrote.
"It's just like, kind of mean?" He cringed, loosely strumming the melody on his guitar strings nonetheless. "I don't know, I love the melody...Maybe let me change the lyrics?"
"No!" Namjoon complained, twirling one of his drumsticks around the fingers of his left hand. "They're really good! Like, poetry level type shit." Jimin turned around to look at Namjoon, who was at behind his drum set. "Besides, who cares if it's a little harsh, I doubt he'll even clue in to the fact that it's about him."
"Ha!" Jimin laughed, strumming his guitar. "Oh, he'll clue in alright. I didn't exactly make it subtle."
Taehyung groaned, setting the music sheet back onto the floor below him and adjusting the strap of his bass guitar.
"Okay, and so what?" He countered. "He toyed with the heart of a musician, he'd be stupid to think that in the time you guys were apart you weren't shit talking him in your lyric book." Jimin pursed his lips, trying to think of any possible way to convince his bandmates to cut him some slack with this.
"Yeah, but we're good now." He sighed. "Playing a song I wrote when we weren't is kind of a slap in the face." Jimin had written this song literally two days after his and Jungkook's falling out, the wounds were still fresh then and the lyrics were bleeding every emotion he had felt at that time. It was the only way he could really think of to make sense of all of his thoughts, finding it much easier to organize them on paper.
Sure, the words were a little exaggerated, but it was pretty obvious who they were about.
"Not our fault you made some of your best work when you were heartbroken." Namjoon shrugged, producing a quick drumroll with his beat up drumsticks. "This songs so fun to play too, it would be such a waste to save it in your drafts."
Jimin thought for a moment, nervously tapping his fingers against the neck of his guitar. It was really good, he knew it was. The melody was extremely satisfying to pluck on his guitar, and Namjoon and Taehyung's accompaniment brought it together into a catchy, well rounded piece.
Why did it have to be about him?
"Fine." He finally sighed, rolling his eyes when his two bandmates cheered in response. Jimin knew that they wouldn't let up, ever since he had shared what he wrote they had been pretty obsessed with the track. "But we've still got a week! Maybe I'll write a new one to replace it."
Taehyung rolled his eyes, standing back up now that Jimin was finally convinced to practice the song him and Namjoon had been itching to.
"Yeah, alright." He laughed. "Don't work yourself to death trying to do that." Taehyung leaned down, adjusting the knobs on the amp next to his feet. "I really don't think Jungkook will get his panties in a knot over one song about him." His words were partially muffled by the guitar pick his bit between his teeth. "I bet he's wrote dozens about you."
Jimin blushed softly, looking down at his lyrics and exhaling.
"Probably nice ones though." He countered, plucking out the first few notes of the song and watching as his bandmates took that as a cute to ready up.
Taehyung shrugged.
"You told me he only showed you one." He mused. "Who knows what else could be hiding in his little songbook?"
Jimin frowned, his mind already taking that as a cue to think of any and every negative attributes about himself Jungkook could've taken inspiration from. He couldn't really think of anything, but he also couldn't see himself from the younger male's perspective.
"Shut up and play the song." He huffed. "You're gonna make me overthink."
He tapped his foot a few times against the carpeted floor, playing the first few notes for a real practice run this time around.
As if he hadn't been overthinking since he first met Jungkook.

"What's gotten into you today?"
Jungkook's chest was heaving, sweat beading up on his brow as he sat behind his drum set in Yoongi's basement alongside his bandmates. They were just in the middle of a practice, but with the way Jungkook was playing you could've assumed they were performing a serious show.
It's not that he was lazy during practice usually, it was just that he normally didn't give his full span of effort; saving that for the real thing when they were in front of a crowd underneath the stage lights. It was understandable, and his bandmates did it too, conserving their energy as they performed the same songs over and over to perfect them.
Today though, despite being an hour late for their practice, the energy radiating off of him was something his bandmates couldn't ignore. It wasn't a bad thing, it was just pretty unexpected considering that for a little bit they had all assumed he just wasn't going to make it today.
"Just in a good mood." Jungkook replied, fairly breathless as he wiped a bead of sweat from off of his forehead. He looked up to his bandmates, smiling cheekily. "Excited for the competition, y'know?"
Yoongi raised an eyebrow in suspicion, looking to Hoseok and Seokjin who both also had similar expressions on their face.
"Yeah, is that it?" He asked, his expression of disbelief only growing stronger when he noticed Jungkook's smile turn into a more sheepish one. "Sure it's got nothing to do with Jimin?"
Oh, it had everything to do with Jimin.
Ever since Jungkook had left Jimin's apartment it had been difficult to keep the smile off of his face. The night that they had spent together was an experience Jungkook hadn't felt in a really long time. Nothing even remotely sexual had happened between the two of them, it was just a night with the purpose of simply spending time together. For some reason though, every single interaction they had was sticking to his mind like glue.
The way Jimin's eyes crinkled up when he laughed at a stupid joke Jungkook would spout, the look of calmness that took over his features as his fingers strummed out notes on his acoustic acoustic guitar, the warmth of his body as they lounged close together on his couch.
Jungkook couldn't remember the last time his heart fluttered at things so seemingly mundane.
"Oh? What happened with Jimin?" Hoseok asked, turning around to look at their drummer. "You guys hook up again?"
Jungkook rolled his eyes, leaning back in the seat behind his drum set. Sure, Jimin was still as gorgeous as the first time Jungkook laid eyes on him, but being physical was the last thing on his mind last night. He hadn't been lying when he said he just wanted to know Jimin. He just wanted to be in his presence.
"No, we didn't." Jungkook answered, twirling one of his drumsticks around in right left hand. "But I didn't want to either. We just hung out." Seokjin and Hoseok looked shocked, Yoongi though wasn't the least bit surprised.
"Last night?" Hoseok asked, Jungkook nodding in response. "So that's why you were late to practice. What'd you guys do then?"
Jungkook shrugged, reaching up and brushing a few sweaty pieces of hair out of his eyes.
"As I said, we just hung out." He knew that his words were extremely foreign to his bandmates, as he hasn't had a genuine interest, not just sexually, for someone in years. "Drank coffee, played music, you know just casual stuff."
Seokjin whistled, an incredulous smile spread across his face. It was a surprising, yet welcome change to see their youngest bandmate possibly actually falling for someone.
"He must be really cute." Seokjin mused, putting to hands against his microphone stand and leaning against it. Out of all of them, Yoongi had been the only person who had actually met Jimin after all - but he must've been damn near perfect if he managed to take hold of Jungkook's heart.
"It's not just his looks." Jungkook sighed. "Like yeah, he's fucking stunning, but that's only the half of it." He looked up to his bandmates, huffing softly when their gazes told him they expected him to elaborate. "It's his personality. He's... God, it's difficult to even put into words. He's just entrancing; every time he speaks I want to listen to him forever. When I'm with him I never want to go home." Jungkook knew his words were cheesy, but he couldn't find himself caring. "He's everything I could ever want, all wrapped up into one person."
"Wow, I never thought I'd see the day." Hoseok laughed, his face painted with a mixture of shock an amusement. "Ladies and gentlemen, Jungkook's in love." He punctuated his words by making a heart with his hands, grinning as he watched a pink tint rise upon Jungkook's face.
"I am not in love." The blue haired male countered, looking away to avoid the gazes of all of his bandmates. He definitely was not. He just really liked Jimin, nothing crazy about that.
"I don't know.." Yoongi chuckled, leaning over and looking at the lyric sheet that was positioned in front of Seokjin. "These lyrics are saying something else." It was extremely evident that the lyrics Jungkook had presented them were written with a certain someone in mind; they were dripping with romantic undertones, Seokjin shocked the first time he had laid his eyes on the sheet of paper.
Jungkook did write quite a few lyrics along with Yoongi, but it wasn't often that he produced something with so much unbridled emotion. It was so raw, like Jungkook had carved open his chest and spilled his heart onto the page.
He could deny it all he wanted, but his bandmates were sure that he just couldn't comprehend the full extent of what he was feeling.
"It's like poetry, it's just a bit exaggerated is all." Jungkook shrugged, tapping his drumsticks against his thigh anxiously. "It's really not that deep, it's just lyrics."
He found himself to be quite flustered once Jimin became the topic of conversation, yet another emotion he wasn't all too familiar with. "I invited him and his bandmates to our show tomorrow by the way. So, since you guys are so curious, you'll get to meet him."
"Oh, I'm excited." Seokjin grinned. "It's not fair that Yoongi's the only one who's met your Prince Charming." He clapped his hands together in excitement. "Plus, I suppose it'll be cool to meet our competition."
Jungkook laughed softly, leaning forwards and shaking out his hair.
"I'm sure you'll like them, his bandmates are pretty cool." He smiled, raising an eyebrow when Hoseok shook his head.
"It's not about if we like them or not, it's about if we think we can beat them."
