❝ WE ARE NOT PLAYING TWENTY QUESTIONS DURING THE APOCALYPSE, ❞ Five declared as he and Lola trekked into town.
"And why not?" Lola queried. "There's not much else to do, is there?" Five didn't offer a response after that, knowing her to be right. She smiled proudly to herself as she and Five walked into the remains of an old department store.
Everything was blown to bits and the rubble littered every part of the store. "We're looking for supplies," Five reminded her as he sidestepped some concrete from the wall. Lola nodded as they separated.
Lola perused the aisles, finding items that weren't terribly obliterated. She grabbed things like rope—because who knows what they might have to build or fix, and when isn't rope useful?—duct tape, a few jackets, a pocket knife and some more trinkets.
She deposited her things into a storage box that she carried around as she looked for more things. Eventually she made it towards the main area of the store where there was racks upon racks of clothing. Most of it was torn or burned, maybe even discolored by ash.
Lola set the box down on a mannequin display, glancing up to see the mannequins were mostly intact. She spun around as Five headed towards her, items of his own. "Can you believe these survived?" she asked, jutting her thumb out toward the mannequins. "Well except for that one, it's missing an arm."
"Mannequins are literally the least of our worries," Five told her. Lola shrugged, picking her box of things back up.
"You know, we could theoretically stay here. Most of the store's still intact and I don't think the ceiling's going to come down on us anytime soon," she argued, setting the box right back down. "Plus, residing in town puts us close to whatever supplies we may able to find."
Five was silent, as if weighing out the options. "You might be right," he said finally. "Alright, fine. Let's do it. This is subject to change though, okay?"
"Isn't everything?" Lola patted him on the shoulder before venturing off into the store once more to find more supplies, this time to be able to build somewhat of a shelter.
Eventually she came back with blankets, pillows, and the boards that she pulled off of shelves. She also came back with a battery operated lantern—as well as whatever batteries she could find—and candles. Plus, a lighter to light said candle. They'd need a light source once it got dark.
Lola ushered Five aside and began assembling something akin to a blanket fort by the mannequin display. "I've known you for about three hours, and I already wish I didn't," Five said finally. Lola then dug into her nearby box, pulled out the duct tape and threw it at Five. "Hey!"
"Be nice!" she scolded. Five threw his hands up in defense as Lola went back to assembling. Finally, there stood something resembling a sizable fort as Lola stood back and threw her arms into the air. "Tada!"
The "shelter" had two pillows, one on either side, as well as a blanket to match them. In between the "beds" was a lantern that was currently off. Lola had stationed candles outside of the shelter if they ever needed them.
"Not half bad," Five complimented as Lola just shrugged, sitting down onto her "bed" as Five sat down on his. "We still don't have food."
"That we can worry about tomorrow," she told him. "For now, we can talk." She sat up, cross crossing her legs to better face him.
"We're not playing Twenty Questions."
Lola rolled her eyes, waving him off as she grabbed the second blanket on her bed and draped it over her lap. "Look, we're the only two humans alive that we know of. The least we can do is talk."
"Fine," Five relented. "Your sister. What's she like?"
"Her name's Althea and she's my twin," she answered, tapping her finger against her knee for a moment as she thought. "She's hard to describe. We're both very introverted, but she's always busy practicing and trying to hone her powers. She's also really bubbly and the "fun twin", I guess you could say."
"Ouch," Five responded, mimicking her response to him from earlier. Lola shot him a glare as he just gave her a smug grin in return. "So, she's your twin. You both have powers?"
Lola nodded. "Her powers involve time. Essentially this just extended to objects. Like, if a cup fell off the table and shattered then she could reverse it. The larger the time gap, the less possibility she'd be able to reverse anything."
"And you?" Lola tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear, staring at the details of the carpet. "Lola?"
She let out a sigh. "I don't really know," she admitted finally. "I don't try to use my powers. The most I do is get angry and cause books to fly off their shelves. I can't tell you much more."
"Oh."
Lola shook her head, as if to shake the subject off. "It doesn't really matter. My powers aren't really going to help anyone here." Of course, her sister's powers would. If she was here... "I'm tired, I think I'm gonna just try to sleep." Before Five could react, Lola laid down on her side—facing away from him.
He let out a sigh. Whatever this was, it was not going to be easy.
