Chapter 6
^I need those shoes!!^
Recap
"Pardon me." He said while grinning as if he was hiding something. Jem and Zachariah continued on their way back to the Institute, unaware that the same man was following them silently in the shadows.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
When Jem and Zachariah got back to the Institute, Zachariah handed his past self a packet. It shone silver in the afternoon sun, glittering like stardust. Wordlessly, Jem pocketed the yin fen. His silver hair was bright in the sun, almost as if it was made of metal.
Being the gentleman that he was, Jem opened the door for Zachariah and let him in. A blast of cool air cooled him as he stepped inside. It still shocked him that you could change the temperament of a room with the click of a button. It would have been helpful on the cold, rainy nights where there was only a fire to keep warm.
He fingered the dagger at his side. Something was. . . off. Whipping around as quick as a flash, he threw a dagger at his target. It wizard through the site and landed twenty yards away, in the grass, point deep in the ground. Muttering in Mandarin, Jem went to retrace his dagger. This one was his favorite- the one his father had given him when he got his first Marks. He was ten, and it had been a warm day.
It was a pleasant day when Jem got his first Marks. A Silent Brother had come in a carriage, his parchment colored robes billowing in the afternoon breeze. The Shanghai Institute stood strong, at the end of the street. Its stain glass windows creating colorful patterns on the floor where the sun hit it.
Jem stood strong, awaiting to truly becoming a Shadowhunter. He had been awaiting this day for years. He bounced nervously on the balls of his feet, ready for his time to shine. The Silent Brother, Brother David, had just arrived and stood by the doorway, like a statue. Jem smiled shyly and walked over to the center of the room. His parents smiled reassuringly at him from the other side of the room. Jem scratched the his neck. The ceremonial gear was itchy, and it made him feel hot and stuffy inside.
James Carstairs. Brother David's voice rang out in Jem's head. You are now of age. It is time for the first of the Angel's Marks to be bestowed on you. Are you aware of the honor being done to you, and will you do all in your power to be worthy of it?
Jem stood up at straight as he could and, in his most confident voice, said:
"Yes."
And do you except these Marks of the Angel, which will be upon your body forever, a reminder of all that you owe the Angel, and your sacred duty to the world?
"I accept."
Then we begin.
The Silent Brother pulled out a stele from beneath his parchment colored robes. Placing the tip of it to Jem's skin, the Silent Brother drew the rune of strength. The delicate lines intersected with each other, crossing his veins, wrapping around his arm.
Jem did his best not to flinch at the slight burning sensation the stele created as the runes took shape. Brother David drew runes of Clairvoyance and Agility, Angelic Power and Stamina. When he was done, he walked out of the room, leaving Jem with his parents.
"Congratulations Jem." His father said as he gave his son a hug.
"Thanks." Jem smiled brightly. He felt different, more mature, more. . . powerful- like he could do anything.
H
is father took a dagger out of his sheath and handed it to his son, handle out. Jem took it and placed it in his own sheath. His first weapon.

"Where'd you go?" Will asked when Jem and Zachariah got back.
"Oh you know. Here, there, everywhere." His Parabatai replied. "There was a strange man that we bumped into. Looked familiar. Blonde hair, blue-grey eyes. Moved a bit strange."
Will shrugged. "There as quite a bit of people who look like that."
Jem nodded, not even listening to Will. Could Tessa know? There were only a handful of people who knew about how powerful Mortmain could be, how dangerous he was.
"I talked to Magnus. He said that there isn't a way for us to get back."
Jem's heart sank. He had to get back and live what he had left of his life with Tessa and Charlotte, and Henry and Sophie, and even the Lightwood brothers.
"There has too be a way Will, Zachariah is here, so we must have gotten back somehow."
Will nodded. "It just doesn't make any sense. Could someone have tampered with the portal?"
"I don't think so. Magnus and Henry where their at all times" Will's eyes grew stormy as he thought about all the possibilities. At this point, anything was possible. There could be demons involved, people could come back from the dead–
"By the Angel." He ran and, without a glance, left Jem state dong there in shock. He needed a library. He had to get one now. If only he k we where it was. Down the hall, to the left–
"
GHA!" He shielded his eyes at the sight in front of him.
It was Izzy and kissing in the hallway. As soon as he spoke, they broke apart as if the other was poisonous.
"Do you have no shame?" He said to the while he looked away. The nerve of people these days. . .
"Hello Will. Um. . . How can we help you?" Simon said, trying to break the ice of the awkward silence. His brown hair was a bit tousled.
Putting matters aside, Will gasped. "I need Tessa and a library. Immediately."
Izzy nodded, sensing the tension in his voice.
"Good it. Simon, show Will to the library. I'll get Tessa." Simon nodded and Will followed him around the corridors of The Institute.
The two boys ran at top speed and, Will had to admit that Simon was faster then he thought he would be. He scanned the large shelves looking for the right book.
"Lansing, Little Whinging, aha! London." He grabbed the volumes that had London Institution enscribed with golden letters. Opening it, he searched the table of contents that listed every person who resided there. Simon stood there, watching.
"What did I miss?" Tessa said as she walked in. It looked like she had ran there, and Izzy and Jem came in behind her. Jem eyed his Passable wearily; he knew he was on to something.
Will placed his books on the table and began flipping through the pages. Finnaly, he reached his destination. There was less than page of information. Scanning the page, he read aloud.
"Nathaniel "Nate" Gray was the biological son of Harriet Moore and her late fiancé, and the adoptive son Elizabeth Gray and Richard Gray. He was also the adoptive brother of Tessa Gray, whom he ultimately betrayed while working for the Magister. He died in a battle in 1878, but his body was never recovered."
Tessa looked down from where she was sitting as tears rimmed her eyes.
"Will, we all know about my brother," she chose her words cautiously. "But he died over a century ago. I don't know what he has to do with our problem now."
"It was the man." Jem said. Sensing Tessa's confused look, he explained. "Zachariah and I where walking about the city when a man bumped into us. He looked remarkably like your brother."
"Someone could be messing with us. . ." Tessa said, but she knew what the boys were saying was true. Will looked Tessa straight in the eyes.
"Tess, your brother is still alive, and he wants something that we have. You know how he is. He won't stop."
At those words, Tessa fainted.
