Chapter 2
Recap:
Jem looked around the room and froze when he saw the women with the grey eyes.
"Tessa?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of all the things in the world, Jem was not expecting to see Tessa. His whole body hurt from lack of yin fen, but there were other matters at hand.
Tessa could only nod.
"What is happening?" Will practically screamed. Jem winced at the sudden outburst. "Sorry."
Tess turned to Will.
"We should all go the dining hall to explain everything."
"Tess, this isn't 1887 anymore. Let's go to the library. Its closer." The man said with a smile.
"Pardon, but who are you?" Jem asked. He couldn't place it, but so something was familiar about the man.
"You can call me Zachariah." He said with a faint British accent. He gave Tessa a pointed look.
"What's your last name?" Will asked.
"That's not important at the moment." Zachariah said.
Will groaned on frustration. "Fine then. Where did you get Jem's box of yin fen? How do you know Tessa? Why do you look so dam familiar?"
"Will- in the library." Tessa put a hand on his shoulder. Jem's mind was working overtime. No matter how hard he thought, he couldn't put the pieces together.
"Fine. Let's go." Will said, defeated.
"I'll go get the others." Magnus said. Will jumped. He had forgotten that Magnus was there.
"William, have you seen my- thanks." Jem said as Will handed him his jade cane. Will helped him up. Jem wobbled a bit, then regained his balance.
"Follow me." Tessa said. Jem was still shocked about how different Tessa was. Her hair was down, she was wearing tight blue pants, and what looked like a jacket but with a hood and no buttons.
Did he even get to marry Tessa? When did he die? Jem knew that he would young, but did he even live to see his own wedding?
They turned left around a corner and opened the door to find a large library with what seemed like every book imaginable. Zachariah walked up to an armchair and shut an open book.
"Here's your book Tess." Will had to admit, he was a little bit hurt to know that Zachariah was calling Tessa by his nickname for her. Will looked down at the cover. A Tale of Two Cities.
"You can keep it. You're almost done with it. Your the only person I know who hasn't read it." Tessa said. Zachariah shrugged and put the book on a table.
Will smirked. "All we need to do now is to get James here to read that book."
"You'll never get me to read it. I have my music, you have your books." Jem muttered, pretending to be angry.
Tessa and Zachariah shared a knowing look and smiled.
"Zachariah, wanna go get it?" Tessa said beaming. Zachariah nodded and swiftly walked out of the room. It was as if the two had spent a hundred years together. It looked as if they could read each others minds.
A moment later, the door opened. The trio looked up, expecting Zachariah, bit getting Magnus. Along with him, came five teens.
Izzy and Simon were among them.
"I'm Alec Lightwood." The boy with black hair and blue eyes said. Jem whistled lowly.
"Looks like you William." He said.
Will studied him closer. He did indeed look like him, just with higher cheekbones.
"Ugh. I've had enough annoying Lightwoods to last a lifetime." Was all that Will said. Tessa smacked his arm.
"Really?" Will shrugged in return. Izzy stepped forward.
"That's my brother your talking to you prick." She said with a harsh glare.
"Okay! Moving on." Magnus said cheerfully. He gestured to the red head.
"I'm Clary Fairchild." She said. Her eyes were a vivid green and a doting of freckles on her nose and cheeks.
Will muttered something that sounded suspiciously like 'Little Buford' Jem smiled.
"Pleasure to meet you."
Simon waved. "I'm um. . . Simon Lovelace. My last name was originally Lewis and I used to be a vampire. I'm an ascendant."
"How can you be a vampire then not?" Will said, confused.
"Sorry William. You can't bite him. He's no longer a child of the night." Tessa said smirking.
"Yah, cause last time that didn't go so well. . ." Magnus said, remembering the last time Will bit a vampire.
"I'm Jace Herondale." The golden boy said.
Will's jaw dropped. Jem could see the confusion etched on his face. Just as it came, it was gone.
"Glad my good looks made at least some impact on later generations."
Jem face palmed and Clary groaned.
"My god, there's two of them." A new voice said. Every head snapped to the doorway. Zachariah was standing by the door, holding a violin case.
Jem grinned.
"Where did you get that? Tessa did yo-"
"Will and I kept it. After you- after- you left us." Tessa said, the last part a whisper.
Jem nodded and Will looked shocked and sad.
"C' mon William. You knew it was going to happen." Jem said trying to lighten the mood. The silence was palpable.
"I- I need to get some air." Will said, his voice shaking. Jem looked heartbroken, his face a mess of emotions.
"Willi-" Jem was cut of by the slamming of this library door. Jem put his head in his hands. After a moment or two, he spoke tro Tessa.
"How much longer do I have?"
Tessa looked down. Fighting her emotions. He brown hair shielded her face, making her facial expression near impossible to read.
"Tessa. I need to know."
"Jem, I-" Tessa began.
"Tell him Tess. He deserves to know." Zachariah said. He had an understanding look on his face. His golden brown eyes were pleading.
"You left a month after Cecily came, correct?" Jem nodded, his face grim. "You- you have less than two months." She chocked out.
"How? I- oh." Jem said, his face falling.
"You where taking more yin fen, and Mortmain took the supply and- and-" Tessa broke down sobbing.
" I'm sorry Tessa." Jem said, comforting her. Tessa nodded and sat down next to Jem.
"We should get back on track." Magnus said. "Jem, can you find Will? You might want to bring Church with you. He knows this place inside-out."
"Church is here? How is he even alive?"
Alec poked his head through the door and yelled for Church to come. A moment later, the cat came sauntering in. Zachariah bent down to pet him and surprisingly, the cat let him.
"Just tell Church where you want to go or who to find." He said. Jem walked over to the cat and whispered who he wanted to find. The grey cat set of down the halls and Jem followed.

fter twenty minutes of weaving and turning through corridors and hallways, Church stopped. Will was in a spare room staring out of a wide window, his black hair a mess. He didn't even know that Jem opened the door.
"Will?" Jem's voice sounded worried. Even scared. Will didn't move. He continued to stare out the window. "I'm sorry Will."
Will turned, his face a mask of grief.
"Why should you be sorry? I'm the one who failed. I didn't find the cure!" Tears were streaming down Will's face, his hair a tangled mess.
"Will," Jem said gently. "You didn't fail. It's alright. What matters now is that I'm fine now. Let's go back. Tessa and the others are waiting for us."
Will nodded and took one last look out the window. He put his arm around Jem's shoulder and Jem did the same to Will. Together, as parabatai, they walked back to the others who were waiting.
