Chapter 1

Feel free to tell me any mistakes I made with grammar and facts.

Magnus checked the portal one last time. It was a navy blue, with shimmering edges.  Will and Jem stood behind him, side by side.  He squinted, and waved his hand over the portal again. Something wasn't right about this portal. He knew something was wrong, but he couldn't name it. Sighing, he beckoned for Jem and Will to come over.

The Parabatai where both wearing training gear with daggers strapped to their belts. Will's curly hair looked like it hadn't been combed at all. Jem, on the other hand, looked clean and proper. He was holding his jade cane in one hand. What many people didn't know was that the cane had a secret compartment where a knife was hidden on the end. Just one click, and it came out of the end, sharp and deadly.

"Ready?" Will said with an anxious tone. Magnus nodded.  This was their first time traveling by portal and they were nervous. Who could blame them though?  "Let's go James."

"Thanks ever so much for the favor Magnus." Jem said. He was the polite one of the pair. And the only kind one. "Goodbye, Tessa." He kissed his fiancé and stood by Will, leaving Tessa standing there, blushing deeply.

"Goodbye."

Together, the Parabatai stepped through the portal, unaware that this would be the last time in a long, long time that they would see Victorian London again.

What happened next was odd. One moment Will and Jem's feet were on the ground, the next it felt like they were falling through space and time. It felt like they were falling for years, centuries even. Neither knew if this was normal for a portal- it was a new method of travel that only a few Shadowhunters had experienced.

Finally, they landed on there feet. Jem did a quick 360 to make sure they were out of danger. As he looked, he noticed that Will wasn't there. What had happened to his Parabatai?  They seemed to be in a sort of park, with a few people milling around, though not anywhere near them.

"Will! Where are you-" He was cut off by a shout.

"I'm here James, don't fret." Will walked out from behind a corner and dusted himself off. His gear was slightly wrinkled and he tried to smooth it out in vain. He too, did a quick scan of his surroundings and walked up to Jem.

Jem grabbed his jade cane and put his hat back on. When he was in public, the eyes of every passerby came to his hair. It was a shocking silver, the same shade as his eyes. He despised it. He loathed the way the drug made him.

A slight ruffling sound brought the two boys back to their senses. Will snapped his head towards the sound and his hand crept towards his dagger. Jem held his cane and clocked the button that made the dagger pop out. A demon lunged towards them.

As quick as a blink, they stood side by side. Years of training and hunting left them with peaked senses and fast reflexes. It also came in their blood. The demon was a Shax, and it's thick armor and pincers were visible. It stood in front of them like a wolf ready to pounce on its new prey. But the boys were ready.

Will lunged at it while Jem snuck behind it. Will stabbed at it and tried to pierce its armor. Meanwhile, Jem got up to a nearby tree and jumped onto the Shax demon. He held his hand out in the air, and Will, after years of training for this move, threw his dagger into Jem's hand with pinpoint accuracy. Jem raised his hand, ready for the final blow.

The Shax demon reared backwards and, before Jem could kill it, it threw Jem of its back. He hit a tree and fell to the ground, unconscious. The Shax demon approached Will, and it looked like it had a maniacal smile on its face. Just when Will thought it was the end, he heard the twang of an arrow and the crack of a whip. A thick golden rope looped around its neck, holding it in place. An arrow whizzed by, missing the demon by an inch.

Twang

Another arrow was shot and it hit its mark. The Shax demon roared in fury and disappeared back into the void. A girl with long black hair and a whip in one hand stood there panting. By her side, was a thin looking boy with glasses and a bow and arrow.

"You okay?" She said while wrapping her whip and hooking it to her belt.

"I- By the Angel! Jem!" Will ran to his parabatai's side and began to gently shake him by his shoulders. "Jem, I need you to wake up."

His silvery haired friend opened his eyes. Immediately, Will saw that they were gray, as was his hair. Jem needed more yen fen.

"I'm fine Will. Don't worry." Jem said. His eyes were clouded by pain, and Will knew he was lying.

Will grabbed his Parabatai's hand and he pulled him up. Jem stumbled and leaned heavily on Will. The girl and boy were walking towards them, and for the first time, Will noticed the strange clothing they were wearing. It was gear, but it looked strange. It was lighter, thinner.

"Do you know an institute nearby? We need to go there now." He said.

"Follow us." The girl said, sensing the urgency in the situation. "Its about five minutes away."

Will nodded, and he put one of Jem's arms around his shoulder.

"Can I have some help?" He said in an annoyed tone. The boy with the glasses came up to them and put Jem's other arm over his shoulder.

"I'm Simon."

"Will. This is Jem." Simon looked surprised at this but covered it up quickly.

That was odd. Will thought. Didn't he somehow know Simon? The four shadowhunters walked until a large church was visible. The girl ran up to the door and opened it.

"Magnus! Get down here! It's an emergency!" She yelled. Will and Simon brought Jem through the doors.

"Where is the infirmary?" Will asked.

"Follow me." They rushed up the stairs and put Jem down on and empty bed. As soon as he layer down, he started too cough. They shakes his thin frame and blood came out.

"Do something!" Will yelled. He knew it was helpless (ha!). Jem made eye contact with Will for a moment, then fell back onto the bed, unconscious yet again.

"What's wrong Izzy? Did Simon die again or-" the warlock broke off, staring at Will and Jem as if he had a seen a ghost. "Izzy, get Tess and. . . Zachariah"

"Zachariah? Oh! You mean J-" Izzy was cut of by the warlock.

"Hurry up!" Izzy raced out of the room and pulled a shiny rectangle out of her pocket. At Tessa's name, Will looked up.

"How do you know Tess?"

Instead of answering, the warlock looked straight at Will. His yellow cat eyes boring until Will's blue ones.

"Magnus?"

"Yes William. That is my name." Magnus sighed.

"How are you here? Why are you shiny? What the hel-"

"I'm here Magnus." A familiar looking woman came in. Her grey eyes panicked. Another person came rushing after her, with a silver box in his hands. The man froze in his tracks and stared at Will. "Get some water for Jem."

Not even bothering to ask questions, Will ran over to a nightstand where Simon had placed a glass of water. He handed it to the man and, for the first time, looked at him. He had gold-brown eyes and black hair with a faint silver streak in it. He looked familiar, but different at the same time.

His long fingers opened the silver box that Will hated so much. Taking a pinch from it, he put it in the glass of water. Looking for something to mix it with, he grabbed his stele and stirred it a few times. He handed the concoction to Will.

Walking over to Jem, he sat him up and put the drink to his lips. Jem gaged, and at the sound, Will winced. Muttering encouraging words to Jem, Jem drained the glass.

He opened his eyes, now a blinding silver. Jem sat up and winced. Will looked alarmed but Jem waved it off.

"I'm fine William."

"You don't look the part." Will muttered. Jem smiled, always being calm and hard to anger. The only time Will had seen Jem angry was when Tessa and Jem had found him on the opium den with the warlocks and addicts.

Jem looked around the room and froze when he saw the women with the grey eyes.

"Tessa?"
