Chapter Two
Patton had a bright smile on his face as he approached his best friend's door. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach as he rang the doorbell, always feeling nervous to hang out with him at his house.
It was when they were alone that he felt the most awkward, constantly under pressure to make him smile and laugh. It felt like it was no secret that he had a massive crush on his intellectual friend, but despite the fact that he wasn't very discreet about it, Logan showed no signs of knowing about his feelings. They'd started way back in elementary school, shortly after they became friends. His little schoolyard crush had turned into something realer over the years, and there was simply nothing Patton could do to help it. Feelings were feelings, and love was not a choice.
Now humming Girls/Girls/Boys to himself, he shifted awkwardly outside the door. Logan hadn't come and answered it, and he'd been waiting for two minutes already. Frowning slightly, he pulled out his spare key and entered the seemingly empty house.
"Logan? You here?" Patton called as he put his bag down and pulled off his sneakers. No response followed, leading to himself checking his phone for the time or a text, realizing he was almost forty-five minutes early. "Oh, he might've had somewhere to be then, I'll just text him to let him know I'm here."
Doing just that, he got an automated message telling him that his best friend was driving, so he shrugged and moved into the kitchen in search of microwave popcorn. Logan bought it specifically because of these days, the Friday nights they spent watching movies and staying over at each other's houses, although they typically did this at Logan's. Patton was often embarrassed by his parents and his clearly not as expensive house given that his parents weren't famed and rich scientists, but rather two college professors. He'd, of course, never tell his best friend that was why he preferred to stay over at his place rather than having him come over to his house.
Shaking away the thoughts of his financial state in comparison to Logan's, he put the popcorn in the microwave and moved to the book case full of movies. He tapped his toe as he looked at all the options, wondering what they should watch tonight.
"Well, last week, we watched Winnie The Pooh for me, along with lots of other movies I picked," Patton said to himself, having a habit of talking to no one in particular when he was thinking out loud. He gasped as he thought of the perfect movie to start with. "Logan loves Big Hero 6!!"
He pulled the movie from the shelf, tossing over to the couch and rushing back into the kitchen as the microwave went off to tell him the popcorn was done. A grin was on his face as he pulled the bag out and poured its contents into a large blue bowl. The popcorn was steaming hot, and it took all his will power not to grab a handful, knowing it would probably burn his mouth if he did. Instead, he carried it to the couch and set it down in on the coffee table that was placed in front of it. Picking up the movie, he put it into the fancy DVD player he owned, the movie's menu appearing on the very large TV moments later.
Patton smiled as he then sought out the fluffy blankets he'd bought Logan for Christmas last year. He'd secretly gotten them in hopes that they would be snuggling together at some point, but he tried not to think about those unrealistic dreams too much. Besides, what they did do wasn't far off from full on cuddling, though everything seemed platonic to Logan; they often sat leaning into each other, and on occasion, he'd put an arm around his shoulders, but nothing more. He was lucky that his intellectual friend hadn't caught him blushing when he did that.
Blinking away the thoughts, he draped the blankets on the couch, nodding as he prepared to wait for Logan's arrival. However as he did so, the front door unlocked and opened to reveal his best friend. He had a look of confusion on his face as he stared at his phone before looking up to see Patton. He noticed there was a paper bag in his hand, that he set on the table quickly as he shook his head a little. Patton made a small note in his mind to ask him about it later.
"I just saw your text," he said, putting his keys on the hook by the door as his expression of confusion changed to one of a slight smile. "I can tell by the smell that you've already made the popcorn."
He nodded with a bright smile, moving forward to hug him tightly. Patton used any excuse to touch or hug him, just loving to savor the feeling of being close to someone as closed off as Logan. He smiled even wider as he heard a slight chuckle escape his best friend's lips. "What's the display of affection for?"
"No reason, I just wanted to hug you," Patton replied, shrugging as he pulled away with a characteristically bright smile still on his face. He then grabbed his hand, dragging him in the direction of the couch. "Now come on! I picked out Big Hero 6 for us to watch first because I know it's your favorite Disney movie, but then I'm not sure what you'd be in the mood for, so we have to decide while we're watching!"
Logan smiled at his enthusiasm and his choice of film. His reasons made his chest feel strangely warm; it was something about him knowing what his favorite Disney film was that made him feel unusually happy.
He then blinked away the thoughts, finding himself sitting on the couch next to Patton, who'd hit play on the movie and pulled the bowl of popcorn into his lap. "I was thinking Jurassic Park after this? Or the new Cinderella! Oh, but you might not like that one that much..." he mumbled to himself as he thought.
"Patton, I'm truly fine with watching anything," Logan told him gently, giving him a slight smile. "It doesn't matter to me what we watch, I simply enjoy spending time with you."
The butterflies in Patton's stomach were flying around rapidly now as he thought about what he'd just said. He likes spending time with me! He doesn't usually say flat out what he enjoys, but he just said he enjoys hanging out with me! Me of all people! he thought giddily as he smiled to himself. Maybe this isn't a lost cause! Maybe Logan could really fall in love with me!
