Chapter Twenty
Father Time led Patton back through the garden and through the gateway into the Temple of Time. "You want to assist your friend, yes?" the old man asked him.
He look confused by his question. "Well, he's my boyfriend, actually, and yes, of course! That's why I'm still here," he pointed out, folding his arms. He felt defensive all of sudden; the way the old man had phrased his question seemed to imply something bad was coming. "If I had wanted to go home, I would've had Logan use the watch to take me home by now."
"You're quite right, although there's no reason for you to get defensive son," Father Time reassured him, chuckling a little. "I was simply asking if you wanted to help."
"How would I start helping?" Patton asked suspicously.
He nodded to follow him as they continued down the halls of the temple. They made their way into a room where Logan was sitting, apparently meditating. He looked up as they entered though. "Oh, you found Pat," he said. He stood up as his boyfriend came over to hug him affectionately. "Father Time went to get you and said you weren't in the lounge. Where'd you run off to?"
"Oh I was just exploring," he replied, smiling warmly as he buried his nose into the crook of his neck. "You were practicing whatever new magic stuff you have for like hours and hours!"
Logan chuckled a little and shook his head. "It was only two hours, Patton."
He huffed and mumbled something about that being too long. They pulled away from their embrace. "Anyway, we need to start making headway on finding the Holder of the Heart, but in order to do that, we'll need to be able to defend ourselves," the intellectual young man explained. "Father Time is going to instruct us how to fight."
"Oh- Uh-, I'm not a fighter, Logan. How would I even..."
His voice trailed off as he thought about what was happening to them and how Father Time had asked him if he wanted to help Logan. He'd practically jumped on the old man for even implying that he wasn't willing to help. Now he was being told how he could help and his response was to complain.
That's not very positive or kind of you, he thought to himself. You're supposed to help Logan. He's your best friend and your boyfriend, and you're the one thing that he has that's familiar in all this craziness. If fighting is how you can help, than you'll learn it!
Patton set his jaw and nodded firmly to himself. "You know what? Never mind, where do we start?" he said.
His voice radiated confidence he didn't know he had and his lips curled into a smirk. Logan flushed red at the sight. He'd never seen the emotional young man appear so... cocky? Confident? It was an attractive look on him. Logan found himself clearing his throat and during to Father Time hastily to distract himself.
"He raises a valid question. Where do we start, sir?" he asked him.
Father Time waved a hand and the room transformed before him. The walls seemed to flip, showing displays of weapons of all variations. Panels in the floor opened and dummies rose up. Patton and Logan gawked at the sight, having never seen anything like it. The old man laughed a little. "Please, you two have traveled through time," he pointed out. "A transforming room shouldn't be that much of a surprise."
"I guess you have a point," Patton giggled.
"Okay, to start, I want you to learn basic hand-to-hand combat. You'll have to practice on each other, which is all the more reason for you to learn to be precise and accurate. You don't want to injure each other, correct?" They both shared a nod with each other. The old man then waved his hand and a shimmering holographic image of two people appeared before them. Their eyes widened with curiosity. "I will show you the moves through this projection, and then you will mimic them on each other."
He snapped his fingers and the projection showed a basic punch and block. "Here is how to perform a block. This will be helpful in situations where you get caught fighting an aggressive opponent. Patton, you try the block first."
"Okay," he murmured to himself, watching the projection closely. It seemed doable. He turned to Logan with a confident nod. "Okay, I'm ready! Oh! And don't go easy on me, I got it."
The intellectual young man looked uncertain but nodded after a moment of hesitation. They raised their arms to a fighting stance and then Logan launched into action. He brought his fists down on Patton, who brought his arms up into a perfect block. His boyfriend's hand stopped a couple centimetres away from his face. He smirked happily, laughing a bit.
"I did it!" he cheered as Logan pulled away.
He nodded encouragingly, smiling slightly himself. "That was very good Pat, now you try hitting me so I can practice the block, okay? Same goes for me, don't hold back."
They returned to their starting positions. Once they were ready, Patton ran toward his boyfriend. He brought his fists up to hit him, feeling a tiny bit of fear in the back of his mind, but as he met his determined eyes, he pushed it away. He brought his hand down, but they never made contact with Logan's face. He performed the block perfectly.
Father Time nodded approvingly. "Both of you did very well, I think we'll move on for now. You've still much to learn."
"I do know a couple things already though, I used to babysit a lot of rowdy preteens! I picked a move or two," Patton said, winking at his boyfriend. He looked confused. Patton swept his leg around his feet, hooking it under the back of his knees. The action sent him sprawling onto the floor ungracefully. He laughed as Logan looked up in complete shock. He offered him a hand. "I told you not to go easy on me!"
Logan took it with a smile. "Duly noted."
