Chapter Three
Patton scooted closer to his friend, making any excuse to touch him as they watched their movies. They finished Big Hero 6, moving on to the live action version of Cinderella, which he wanted to watch for the gorgeous visuals of the small fantasy kingdom. There was just something so enchanting about the setting of the movie; it was the type of place he wished he could visit. He sighed wistfully as the camera panned over the kingdom, leaning on Logan's shoulder as he looked toward him curiously.
"Is there something on your mind, Patton?" he questioned, careful not to move as not to disturb their position. There was something comforting in having him close.
He nodded a little, a dreamy smile on his face. "Yeah, I was just thinking about how cool it would be to go there," he explained, pointing toward the screen. "You know, to like, a medieval, fantasy kingdom? I wonder if there were any gay princes back then."
Logan felt annoyance flash through him suddenly at his last comment as he reached up to straighten his glasses, clearing his throat. "Well, there have always been people of diverse identities in the world, regardless of what our historians would prefer to believe. For example, did you know that Alexander Hamilton was most likely bisexual?" the intellectual junior said, putting on his lecture voice that made him smile. "He wrote what could be considered love letters to John Laurens, and while Laurens didn't always respond with the enthusiasm of Hamilton, it's probable that he himself was a homosexual forced to hide behind facade of his marriage to a woman in order to maintain his honor and reputation. We gathered this information from the letters between Hamilton and Laurens themselves, however historians have actually edited and manipulated some of them that they deemed too risque. It's quite interesting."
"I knew there was a reason I wanted to ship Lams after seeing Hamilton last summer!" Patton said with a giggle, making him frown slightly, feeling ignored. "Laurens isn't in much of the show, but there is a couple cute moments, like when Hamilton tells him that he likes him a lot! It's pretty cute!"
"Yes, I'm sure it is," Logan agreed, dropping his gaze to the couch as he felt a strange sense of annoyance whose cause he couldn't place. He felt like he was being brushed off, but he wasn't sure why. Patton was listening to everything he was saying, and he even responded with something related to the topic they were discussing rather than completely changing the topic. Perhaps, it was jealousy, brought on by his comment about gay princes; something about his interest in guys that weren't him made his skin hot in an uncomfortable way, unlike when he complimented him. "But as you were saying?"
Patton shrugged a little, still leaning on his shoulder. "I was just saying, if I could travel back in time, that's the time period I would want to travel to," he said.
"Interesting," he replied, before his attention was pulled elsewhere. Across the room, on the table by the door, he'd placed the bag containing the strange watch he'd been given. Said bag, was glowing blue. His eyebrows furrowed together as he looked at it curiously. "That's strange."
His best friend scowled in confusion. "What's strange about wanting to see the medieval times?" he asked. He sounded wounded, making Logan focus back in on him in a hurry.
"Oh, no, that's not what I was referring to. There's nothing unusual about that," he said, lips quirking up a little in what he hoped was a smile. His eyes traveled back toward the bag, noticing that it had stopped glowing. "I'm just a bit distracted. I think the medieval times would be a fantastic time period to visit, if time travel were possible that is."
Patton seemed convinced by his cover up as a smile returned to his lips. "Yeah, who knows if time travel will ever be possible?"
"I honestly don't think it's a good idea to invent it," Logan admitted. "Time travel as a concept may sound like a good idea, but there are numerous consequences to doing so. There's no telling how time travel actually works because the only 'reference' we have for it come from works of fiction like Back to the Future or Avengers: Endgame. Whose to say that time travel works like either of those examples? We can't possibly know what time travel will really entail if it becomes a reality in our future."
There was silence from his best friend as he stared at him with wide eyes. He looked star-struck as a breathtaking smile spread across his lips. A laugh then escaped him. "You're so fun to listen to!"
A warm rose into the intellectual young man's cheeks as he looked back toward the television, where the prince was talking to Ella for the first time. It was obvious based on the way he was looking at her that he was interested in her. The observation made him inexplicably sad; he wished that he could see that kind of affection and desire in Patton's eyes, but despite his joy upon looking at him, he didn't think he'd ever seen love in his gaze.
A flicker of light caught his attention. He looked back toward the bag containing the watch, seeing that blue light once more. He narrowed his eyes at it as he wondered if he was imagining things, only to find that it had disappeared again.
"Lo? Are you okay? You're really distracted," his best friend said, nudging him a bit.
He flinched but refocused. "Yes, my apologies," he said. Logan wasn't sure if he should tell Patton about the interaction with the old man at the jewelry store. He didn't know if he was hallucinating the glowing that was coming from the bag and if he was, he didn't want to worry him. Logically, it made no sense to jump to conclusions without a sturdy foundation of evidence figuratively beneath your feet. With the way his friend was looking at him, he decided that it would be wiser to gather more evidence that something strange was happening before involving him. "I'm fine, apologies for not being more present in our current scenario. I'll try to be more focused."
He even managed a smile. Patton seemed convinced, but he couldn't help but steal one more glance toward the bag.
