Chapter Six
When Logan opened his eyes, his mind couldn't really comprehend the change in scenery. One moment he'd been in that magical and strange building. The next he was in a forest clearing. Despite his disbelief, the dark green leaves cast shadows against the lush grass he was laying on. His ran his fingers along the soothing blades as he tried to convince his mind that this was real.
He pushed himself off of the ground, sitting up as he looked around. The moon was bright, but the shade of the trees was keeping the area cool and pleasant as a breeze shook the branches above. "Where are we?" he wondered softly, adjusting his glasses.
"Ow... what even happened?" Patton said as he sat up beside him. He was rubbing his head as though he'd bumped it on the ground when they went through the strange frame. The boy's eyes widened in shock as he looked around, gasping. "How did we end up in a forest?! Was that picture frame-thing magical too? I wonder where we are! What did it do to us?"
He didn't sound particularly concerned, but rather excited. Logan shook his head and rubbed his forehead as a headache emerged. "I don't know, but we must figure out what it did so we can undo it."
Patton wasn't really listening as he scrambled to his feet. He was spinning around the clearing with excited laughter coming from his lips. "This forest just has a really amazing feeling to it!"
"Feeling? How... How can a forest have a feeling to it? It's a bunch of plant life and other biological organisms. The forest itself is not one living being and therefor can't have feelings," his intellectual friend explained, scowling in confusion. "Is saying that a place has a feeling some new slang term that I've missed?"
The other boy looked a little lost at his question. "Not really, don't you get a feeling whenever you go somewhere? Like if you come across someplace spooky, you can feel your hairs stand on end. Or if you go someplace old, this calming and awed feeling can fall over you."
"I suppose I can understand what you're saying," Logan said awkwardly. He got to his feet and looked around. "However, there's more important things we need to deal with than whether or not a place can have a 'feeling' to it. We need to figure out what exactly happened when we entered that picture frame, where we were in that building, and what this watch has to do with everything that's happened."
Patton had already wandered off in the direction of the thinning trees. He let out a small gasp of surprise at how far he'd walked away without letting him know, hurrying after him with concern.
"You really shouldn't wander off like that, Patton," he rushed out, grabbing his arm.
He smiled brightly and pulled his arm out of his grip. Instead, he reached for Logan's wrist and pulled him toward the break in the trees that surrounded them. "I saw something interesting through the trees! I wanna go see what it is!" he exclaimed.
The trees line ended and they found themselves on a grassy hill overlooking a valley. In the valley, there was a beautiful sight that caught them both by surprise. A castle made of stone, big enough to be seen from their distance, with a small town built around it, like an old medieval kingdom; it looked like a camera shot of the kingdom in Cinderella.
Patton let out a gasp beside him and squeezed his wrist. "Oh my gosh!! Look at that Logan!"
"I... I don't even know what to say," he replied, gazing at the beautiful structure of the castle. He was lost in its beauty for a moment, but he was able to shake himself from his trance and inspect the style of the building and the smaller buildings around it. His eyes slowly widened. "Patton... I think we've traveled back in time."
At this, his best friend stopped looking at the castle. He whipped his head toward him, eyes wide behind his round glasses. "Wait, what?"
"That building shows little signs of wear, which means it had to have been built relatively recently, yet, its building style is from about 1300 AD. It's impossible that we're in present day," he explained. He could feel his heart rate increasing with nervousness and slight intrigue. Logan took a deep breath and tried to calm down. "Okay. Okay, so we've time traveled back to around 1300 AD, that's medieval times. We've got to figure out how to get back."
He pulled out his watch, inspecting it for some kind of instructions. The only engraving he could find was 'CC' on the back. He determined it unhelpful, considering it he had hypothesis on what that could mean. The intellectual young man flipped the watch back over and inspected its face.
The stars weren't sparkling like they had been before they opened it at his house. He scowled in confusion. What could that mean?
"Hey Lo... what if we didn't go back just yet?" Patton asked cautiously, gazing at the beautiful palace in the distance. He looked up at the boy in shock. "I mean... this is a once in a lifetime opportunity! We could me a real medieval prince! See real medieval architecture! Shouldn't we take this chance to see what the past was really like?"
"What you're suggesting is insane," he replied, shaking his head. "It could be dangerous. We don't have the proper clothing. We don't have the proper currency. We don't have the knowledge to even understand this period of time."
He shrugged and nodded in agreement. "Well, yeah, but we could actually learn that stuff first hand! Aren't you curious?"
"Of course I am, Patton, but we could be trapped in medieval times for all we know," Logan argued. "We need to make sure that we can get back home. Aren't you scared we might never go back to our time?"
The much more emotional boy flinched and nodded. "I'm scared, of course I am, but can that watch even work right now? Shouldn't we wait to use it again after just using it?"
As much as he wanted to argue more, Logan knew he had a point. The watch seemed to be in a recharging stage. As he held it in his hand, he could sense that it didn't have the power to do what it had done before. He sighed heavily and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Well... it is the middle of the night," he said. "I suppose it couldn't hurt to try and find a place to rest."
