Chapter Seven
The evening air had grown a bit chilly as the sun disappeared behind the horizon. The moon cast light upon them to allow them to see their path, but did little to help with the cold. Patton unwrapped the cardigan from around his shoulders and shrugged it on with a shiver. He was starting to regret not attempting to return to the strange palace immediately.
"Patton, you're shivering," his friend pointed out, taking his shoulders in his hands as he looked at him in concern. "Perhaps it would be more beneficial just to stop and start a fire. We could rest on the ground if we have to."
He shook his head. "No, no, I'm fine," he reassured him. He forced a smile onto his slightly quivering, blue lips. Logan gave him a skeptical look that told him he wasn't quite convincing enough. He let out a sigh and reluctantly explained his thoughts. "It's just... it's not that cold. I can keep going. I'd much rather get to the village and stay in an actual inn rather than in the woods. Who know's what's out here?"
Logan nodded, understanding where he was coming from. "Alright, we'll keep going, but do alert me if you get too cold."
They continued their way toward the village and the castle that was growing ever taller as they neared it. Patton couldn't help the excitement he felt as he gazed at the shadow of the great structure; he was exhausted from walking, but could still appreciate the beauty of such architecture. He made a mental note at the extra shimmer his intellectual friend had in his eyes as he looked up at it too.
On the outskirts of the town, there were a couple farm houses. There were several clothing lines hanging up that had linens of sorts. The sight reminded Logan of a very crucial aspect of their appearance as they paused. "We need new clothes."
"Huh?" a very sleepy Patton replied, looking at him with half-lidded eyes. "What do you mean?"
"We can't walk into a 13th century medieval village looking like two teenagers from the 2010s. We would draw unwanted attention to ourselves and most likely be imprisoned for something like witchcraft," he said. "These people don't know anything about the future. We can't show them anything about the future or we'll end up potentially breaking the space time continuum."
The exhausted Patton hummed with a nod before his eyebrows furrowed together. "I thought time was like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff!"
"Patton, that's in Doctor Who," he said, sighing as a slight smile appeared on his lips. Logan then paused to consider the quote. "Well, there's nothing saying that time doesn't work in that way. We've got no proof that it's a strict progression of cause and effect either. However, it's don't matter how time works. I can assure you that it wouldn't be a good idea to walk into a medieval town with polo shirts and jeans."
"Okay, okay, but I want it to be known that I don't like stealing and I don't endorse it," the boy said firmly.
Logan nodded. "I agree, but we've at least got to get something to cover our clothes until we can buy or... borrow more appropriate linens," he explained. "You don't have to do the stealing. I'll take care of it and I promise that if it's possible, we'll return what we've taken before we leave."
"Okay, fine..." Patton mumbled, crossing his arms.
The intellectual young boy headed toward the clothing lines. The darkness of the night kept him hidden and the people in the farm house were likely asleep too. He kept a slightly crouched posture anyway as he neared the hanging clothes. He grabbed two large brown cloaks that looked long enough to cover their clothes. However, Logan realized that they wouldn't be able to stay in an inn without any money.
He winced, biting down on his bottom lip. He really didn't want to have to risk entering the farm house in search of money to steal. As he swung the cloaks over his arm, he heard a small noise. It was the jingling of coins.
Checking the pockets of the cloaks, he found that someone had left twenty gold coins in each of them. Logan let out a sigh of relief and quickly hurried back to join his best friend.
Patton didn't look very pleased as he begrudgingly pulled the cloak around his shoulders. "I don't like that we had to steal these," he muttered, tying the strings at the top to conceal his blue polo shirt. "It's wrong."
"I know, but we've no other choice," Logan replied. He pulled his own cloak on and slid the watch into its pocket to accompany the gold they'd been lucky enough to find.
With tired sighs, they continued their way toward the village. It took them almost another hour to get to the actual town. It was dark, but there were dimly lit fire lanterns hanging from some of the inns and pubs that were open at night. Logan led his friend into one of them, seeing as Patton was practically asleep on his feet at this point.
He carefully guided him into an inn and headed to the counter. The woman working there looked up at the two of them. "Good evening, my apologies for coming in so late, but I was hoping you might have a room vacant?"
"Yeah, we've got a few," she replied, a friendly smile on her lips. "It's two gold pieces a night."
The intellectual young man nodded and dug into his pocket, retrieving two gold pieces. "Here's the gold for tonight," he said. He put it on the counter and the woman took it, looking it over. "If we decide to stay longer, we'll pay accordingly."
She nodded and reached underneath the counter for a key. "It's the last room on your right," she said, pointing down the hall as she pushed the key toward him.
Logan thanked her and lead his exhausted friend to the room as carefully as he could. It took him a moment to get the key to open the lock, but eventually it opened and allowed them to enter their room. He closed and locked it behind them, deciding it was better not to take any chances. He then lead Patton to the large bed in the room and helped him lay down.
As the emotional boy snuggled into the covers, he rounded to the other side of the bed and laid down next to him. He was careful to leave a space between them but despite that, he could feel Patton's breathing. It was calming to him and helped him drift off to sleep.
