Chapter Nineteen

Patton wandered through the halls of the Temple of Time, not knowing what to do while Logan began his training. The idea of being part of this massive conflict was daunting to him. He wasn't a fighter. He didn't like arguing, let alone physical fights, but how could he say no to helping when Logan was forced into this?

His best friend had no choice; plus, they had just decided that they were closer to lovers than friends. He couldn't just abandon him to do this alone. There was so much at stake and so much uncharted territory in front of them. If Patton could provide some constancy or comfort, maybe that would be enough.

A sigh escaped his lips as he stopped in front of a hovering picture frame. He blinked, seeing the imagine inside. It was a gorgeous garden. Even from his limited view, he could see glowing plant life and insects.

He peered closer but was careful not to touch it. There were lanterns and fireflies illuminating the darken garden. Some of the flowers had glowing petals and buds. He titled his head and a small smile started to spread across his lips. It looked tranquil and beautiful inside. Patton looked over his shoulder, checking to see if anyone was around. Father Time and Logan were still busy. He pursed his lips and then reached out toward the picture frame. Once his finger touched the picture, a bright flash consumed him.

His feet landed on the grass carefully as he opened his eyes. The air was cool and fresh. Now that he was inside the garden, he noticed the tall willow and cherry trees that were shading the area. It was then that he realized the garden was inside. There was a ceiling above him that displayed the night sky.

That explains why it seems like night here, he thought with a smile. I wonder if it's always nighttime or if it changes with the time of day.

Fireflies fluttered around him as he began to stroll through the garden. There were so many different types of flowers and plants around him. The glowing ones also added light along with the lanterns. It was so peaceful and quiet. Patton found himself humming a little and he added a skip to his step.

He stumbled upon a small clearing where a patch of land sat in the center of a small pond. He skipped over the stepping stones and sat down. Patton crossed his legs and closed his eyes, letting himself relax. It was quiet and cool.

After a few minutes, there was a rustling sound from behind him. He scowled and turned to look  over his shoulder. There was nothing there that he could see. His frown stayed as he turned back forward. He stayed still for another few minutes, but the rustling came from his left. When he looked that direction, he could see something moving in the bushes.

"Huh?" he murmured, suddenly feeling a bit nervous.

The thing moved out of view, so he turned to his right. A gasp escaped his lips as he was met with a sight he didn't expect. Two very large eyes were staring back at him from only a couple centimetres away from his face. He froze and looked down slightly, seeing that they belonged to a large wolf-like creature. Its fur glistened under the glowing light of the garden and its eyes bore into his.

Patton felt his heart racing in his chest. He hadn't thought that there would be any animals in what looked like a man-made garden. He stayed as still as he could. He hoped that this beast was not about to murder him, but strangely, he didn't feel very scared.

The wolf's eyes were shimmering with emotion. There seemed to be a solemn curiosity in them as it sniffed his shirt. Patton swallowed as its nose brushed his cheek. It pulled away and stared at him. The young man took a deep breath and raised his hand toward it. The wolf sniffed it and then head butted his hand.

He blinked in surprise as the massive wolf then circled him and curled up around him. It laid its head in his lap and whined a little. Patton felt a tug at his heart and began to pet the wolf's head despite his instincts telling him not to.

"I see you've met Kami," a familiar voice said.

Patton looked up to see Father Time standing before him. He looked back down at the silver wolf and smiled awkwardly. "Is that his name?" he asked. The old man nodded. "Well... he's very beautiful. What kind of wolf is he?"

"He is an ancient species of wolf from a time that no longer exists," Father Time explained. "Just after the creation of the Commodities, a natural disaster occurred in their native land. The Holder of the Heart wasn't able to save them, but they got found Kami. He was dying and wasn't going to make it, but they used their powers to restore his life. Now his life is bound to the Holder of the Heart. He cannot die and remains forever loyal to the Holder of the Heart."

"Oh..." Patton murmured sadly. "Is that why he's so sad? Because she's been missing?"

The old man nodded. "He can sense her life force. He's been mourning her, as though she's dead, but there's been no new Holder, so she must be in great pain but still alive," he said. "Kami has been here ever since she disappeared. It seems with each passing day that he grows more defeated."

"That's so sad," he replied, looking down at the wolf. Kami's massive head was still in his lap. Now he understood the feeling of solemnness that hovered in the air and shimmered in his eyes. "We're going to go save her, okay?"

Kami let out a whine and looked up to meet his eyes. Patton smiled sadly and leaned down to press his nose to his head. "We'll try."
