Chapter Nine
Patton smiled brightly as he continued to take in the sights of the medieval village. They needed to find a store for clothing that would be appropriate for a royal ball, but they needed to find glasses first. Currently, he and Logan were doing their best without them, having tucked them into their bag when they left their room at the inn. Logan had better eyesight than he did, but his far sight was decent enough to manage.
"There, that store seems to sell accessories. They might have glasses in there," Logan said, pointing towards a store that had an assortment of hats, bows, and broaches in its window displays. "We've got at least 20 gold pieces."
They made their way into the shop. Fortunately, they found glasses on a wall of shelves alongside broaches, earrings, and various other tips of smaller, metallic accessories. Patton gasped excitedly.
"Wow! They're beautiful!" he exclaimed. He picked up a small pair of shiny silver spectacles and slipped them onto his face. After blinking a few times, his vision was less fuzzy. He looked toward Logan and peered at him closely, trying to test his eyesight. He could make out his facial features but he couldn't see all the details of his eyes or the tiny traces of freckles on his nose that had been brought out by the sun. "They're not perfect, but they're definitely better than nothing at all!"
His friend nodded and turned to the wall of glasses, selecting a thicker pair. They weren't shimmering silver like Patton's but rather pewter or steel. As he looked through them, he noticed the change instantly. His vision wasn't perfect, but it was most certainly clearer.
"I think these should do nicely for a little while," Logan said, turning to his best friend with a small smile. "Let's find out how much they cost."
They removed the glasses and took them over to the counter where the shopkeeper was waiting. She looked up with a smile as they approached. "Hello! I trust you've found what you came here for?" she asked. They nodded and Logan placed the glasses on the counter. She inspected each of them and nodded to herself. "The pewter ones are three silver pieces and the silver ones are seven silver pieces, so you come out to a total of one gold piece."
Logan looked pleasantly surprised by the price as he reached into his bag to withdraw a gold coin. He placed the coin on the counter as Patton retrieved their glasses. "Thank you!" he told the woman, beaming as he slipped his pair onto his face.
She nodded to them as they left the store. "That went better than I expected. I hadn't realized that they used silver currency as well," the intellectual of the two stated as he put his new glasses on. "Perhaps they've even got a bronze currency as well. These gold pieces should cover new clothing fit for the ball we're attending."
"Yay! I'm so excited!!" Patton gasped, remembering that he'd gotten him to agree. He was then struck with an idea, his eyes widening. He looked toward Logan with uncertainty. "Hey Lo, do you think we could shop for our outfits separately?"
The question shocked him as he turned to him with confused eyes. "Why?"
"I just thought, we're going to the ball right? And they're kind of like big, fancy parties... and people go to parties with dates," he offered, testing the waters. He checked for a reaction but he hadn't really received one. "I mean, we're going together, aren't we?"
Logan seemed to have realization dawn on him, his eyes widening and his cheeks getting a pink flush to them that Patton rarely ever saw. "Oh- I suppose- I mean-" he tried. He cleared his throat, feeling himself get more flustered as he stammered. "I suppose if you would like to go to the ball... as a date... I wouldn't be opposed to it?"
He ended up finishing his statement as more of a question. He winced and reached up to rub the back of his neck as he finally looked at his best friend. The other boy was beaming with delight. "Really?!"
"Yes, really. I feel we've known each other long enough that being each other's date is not something out of the realm of possibility," Logan replied, straightening his glasses as he cleared his throat and desperately tried to get his cheeks to return to their normal color. "If you desire that I attend the ball as your date, I shall do so."
"Great! So can we go to the ball separately? I want our outfits to be a surprise!" Patton insisted. At this, the other boy looked ready to argue, but he cut him off. "Before you say I might get lost, the castle is right there and it's huge. There's no way I could get lost."
This was a true statement; from where they stood, the castle towered slightly in the distance. It wasn't that far away and was definitely not difficult to find. "I suppose if you're certain you're comfortable with splitting up. You need to remember that we're not in present day. You have to remember that they won't understand our slang or references. Be careful not to get into trouble."
"Geez Logan, I'm not a child," he teased, still grinning as his best friend handed him about half of their gold coins. "I'll be careful, I promise."
Logan nodded once more and his joyful companion skipped off with more energy and excitement than he could understand. This was indeed exciting, but he was overwhelmed. He reached into his bag and felt around. The watch sat inside comfortably. He pulled it out, running his fingers along the gold engravings on the cover. He could feel it tugging at him, trying to entice him with the secrets it held. He could practically see the figurative face of it smiling mischievously up at him.
With a sigh, he returned it to his bag. It would have to wait. He had promised Patton that he'd be his date to the prince's ball. Logan wasn't the type to break a promise.
