Chapter Five
A blinding flash of light came from the watch, making the two of them shield their eyes in shock. They each blinked rapidly to try and adjust their vision to the intensity of the light filling Logan's living room.
Patton stared at the glowing watch in awe as sparkling particles floated up from its face. The star patterns behind its hands were glowing and spinning in time with them. He gasped at the sight, feeling his heart racing with excitement and a little bit of fear. This watch seemed magical. He wasn't sure if he had fallen asleep at some point during their movie night and this was all a dream or if he was really looking at a real magical encounter.
He looked toward his best friend. If anyone would be able to tell him if what his eyes were seeing was real, it was him. When he took in Logan's appearance, he realized that he looked just as awed and had the same disbelief in his eyes that he felt.
"Logan? Are you seeing what I'm seeing?" Patton asked hesitantly.
"Yes, Patton. I most certainly am," he replied. The sound of his own voice seemed to startle him as he shook out his head and reached up to adjust his glasses. He looked toward his friend in shock and confusion. "I- I apologize for this... I don't know what's come over me. My head feels like it's figuratively being crushed by a hydro press."
He blinked in shock at the severity of that description and quickly tried to lighten the mood. "Well, I would certainly hope that that's figurative, cause I can't be without my best friend for more than a week let alone a lifetime!" he said, forcing a smile.
The intellectual young man looked at him with a slightly pained look of appreciation. "Thank you for attempting to lighten the mood but I really don't know what our next course of action should be," he admitted as his gaze shifted back to the glowing watch. "It's as though I'm being drawn in by some indescribable force. I feel like I'm missing some important piece of information needed to draw the proper conclusions about this watch."
Patton frowned and took a step toward him, reaching to cup his hand beneath Logan's comfortingly. "Well, I think that the best thing to do right now is to close the watch and get some sleep. You won't be able to draw any accurate conclusions with an exhausted mindset."
"You're... You're correct, Patton," Logan said. He shook out his head once more and nodded, locking eyes with him. "Yes, you're right. I'm in no condition to experiment with a potentially dangerous and somehow magical item such as this. I am much more likely to feel better after a good night's sleep."
Smiling, the other boy began to close his hand around the watch to close it. "That's right, there's no point in working ourselves up over this so late at night-"
His sentence was interrupted by a soft clicking sound. They both looked down at the watch, expecting the noise to be caused by it closing. However, Patton's hand had pressed up against a button next to the one Logan had pressed to open it. The pressing of said button caused the light to shift to a blue hue and suddenly the ground beneath their feet wasn't there anymore.
Patton felt a rushing in his stomach and stumbled against Logan. He clutched him tightly, feeling his heart racing with adrenaline as their surroundings blurred wildly. No more than three seconds later, there was solid ground beneath them again.
They hit said ground with force that jarred them, making them both fall to the marble floor. Nausea rose in the young man's throat as he looked toward his intellectual friend. Logan didn't looked like he was going to be sick but he was holding his head as if he had a splitting headache, which given the description of it earlier, was probably the case. Patton took deep breaths in through his nose, rising onto all fours as he gained his bearings.
"What happened?" he breathed, looking to his friend for answers.
"I'm not certain," Logan replied as he got to his feet. His wide eyes were taking in their surroundings and it was then that Patton realized he should probably do the same.
The breath he had recovered seemed to leave him as he gazed around a beautiful room. The floors were marble and the walls were made of glossy stone bricks. Above their heads, particles of light fluttered and blue tinted orbs of light hung like lanterns from the walls. The floor beneath them held a tile design of a person holding a watch with an hourglass behind them; Patton could only imagine how long it must have taken to place each of the tiny tiles that went into it.
"Where are we?" he asked, knowing there was no way Logan would have an answer. "What did that watch do?"
"I don't know, Patton," the intellectual young man said, tone a bit terse with impatience. "I don't have any idea where we are, okay? I'm completely lost to what is happening and your questions are not assisting with my headache."
He winced at his words, feeling wounded as he dropped his gaze to the floor. Logan's eyes widened as he realized what he'd said. He hadn't meant for that to come out so harshly.
Clearing his throat, he attempt to amend his mistake. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I understand that my statement was hurtful," he said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "It's not your fault that we're in this mess. I didn't mean to take out my frustrations on you. I apologize."
"It's fine," Patton replied quietly.
He swallowed as his friend began to look around, probably for information about where they are. His outburst had taken him by surprise and despite his apology, he now felt his insecurities kicking in. He knew he wasn't as helpful in these situations as someone like Logan, but that didn't mean he was trying to make everyone's life harder.
He busied himself by taking in more of their surroundings, finding his gaze landing on what looked like a floating picture frame with no image in it. Frowning, the boy made his way over to it. As he peered closer, a slightly blurred image of a medieval castle appeared inside, making him gasp. "Hey Logan! Come here!" he called excitedly. His friend obeyed and came over to inspect the picture frame as well with a curious look on his face. Patton pointed into it. "There's a medieval-looking castle in there! That's so cool! I wonder what this is for!"
"That's a good question," Logan replied, nodding. "But it's best we don't try to find out. We're already in enough trouble."
He grabbed hold of Patton's wrist to pull him away from it at the same moment the other boy reached out to poke the picture curiously. The two of them felt themselves being pulled into the picture frame and their vision went white.
