IX. | Losing Her Memory
SOS
Abba
Thrashing her legs in a twisted, misshaped and painful form, Melissa's tormented screams could be heard while her wails were still loudly echoing off the hallway walls of Hawkins lab. A congregation of doctors, scientists, and other personal workers in charge of dealing with the problems of cognitive health care voices lap over each other while ordering tests to be done on her. To determine why she is reacting bad.
" Oh god. Oh, god. Milly, honey. Honey. I am right here! I'm right here! Be careful, with her, she is pregnant! You hear me?" Joyce shouted her words, wanting to be nearer to Melissa and held her hand gripping with a tightened grasp. Will was quarantined, in another place in the lab ( he is still on the same level but away from Melissa ) he had began reacting the same way Milly did when the vines were torched. " Milly! Sweetie. Mommy is here! Mommy's here, you are going to be okay. Please, you need to be!"
Mike, in shock witnessing both will and Milly's epileptic-type fit, doubles back at hearing she is pregnant. This is the first time he is aware of how serious it would be, for both Milly and her unborn baby, in the state they are. Will's cries carried in the hallway which snapped Mike out of his shock. " Vitals on both baby and mom?"
A nurse asked, taking her stethoscope off the place around her neck, the crash pad beeps are repeatedly ringing a shrill sound. Drowning in her own sweat Melissa looked around, frantic.
" Momma's heart rate two twenty." Owens was watching Milly, while she fought the turmoil of her inner-demons, and the nurse administers a medically necessary dose of a medicine that'll help calm her down. " The Foetus's heart rate is spiking, she is in distress. I can't seem to get a clear picture of the baby itself. It's like the baby is protected by this wall I can't penetrate or get through. Doctor Owens." She interprets her diagnosis showing Sam exactly what she is seeing. " If we don't calm momma down, soon, sir she is going to go into cardiac arrest!".
" My baby. My.. baby.. she is going to...."
Melissa, choking her words out, swinging her head desperately around to the nurse and her eyes landed on Doctor Owens. " Don't let him hurt my baby! Don't let him hurt my baby! he's a monster. A MONSTER. IT BURNS! Make it stop! Make it stop!" Milly's voice reverts back to one of a little girl, scared of the monsters in her nightmares but this one is real. " Mom! I want my mommy! Mommy! Please. Where.. I want... I want my.."
Effects of the euthanasia given by the nurse starts to kick in and soon as it did, Doctor Owen's allowed Joyce and Bob to go to her bed side— with Joyce sobbing, holding her girls hand trying to remain strong." Oh, honey. Oh my sweet girl, mommy's here. Okay? I'm here. I am so sorry. I'm so sorry this is happening to you. Be strong, you must fight honey. Fight!".
Melissa's eyeballs move below her eyelids. Her face slowly drifting in and out of discomfort, as Katherine ( With Amanda ) both panted while entering the room Milly is in and both girls are astounded at the sight of her discoloured skin. Amanda covered her mouth, tears swelled but she didn't let them fall. Joyce put her hand out offering solace to her daughter's best friends.
' What did that monster to do her. That thing.. it did something to her.'
In a conference room Joyce and Doctor Owens are talking on the topic of precautions with the intent of helping both of her children who are unconscious lying in hospital beds. Joyce, now more irritated than before, anxiously surveyed the space glaring at each offical and scientist. " That Thing, it.. it did something to Milly and will. I am not just going to sit here and.. and let it hurt my kids! You have to do something. It is slowly killing my girl and my boy, Owens!" She pounded her fist on the desk. " this needs to be put to an end! Or otherwise I'm not sure if I'll have them tomorrow!" She cried, frustratedly.
" Like I've been saying, Joyce. We are trying to locate the source of this thing. And we're doing the best we can, with the right people like here in this room." Owens assured, lying straight to her face, and Joyce could see he is doing it for the benefit of his own self protection. " but we need you to tell us about these Now-memories will is experiencing. We are informed Melissa's familiar with the memories too."
" I told you, since Thursday, since I found her screaming her lungs out on the sports field! I found her and feared for her life because of how loudly she was screaming! My baby girl is lying in that bed unconscious 'cause of all your incompetence! And.. and.. why was she here in the first place? Why was she is in those scrubs? When she came in? And the girls too?"
Joyce bombardment of questions served as a basis for Doctor Owens to disclose the truth, it was in her right as a mother to know what was happening to her daughter.
" I had Miss Byers brought in for observation. We believe Melissa is carrying a deadly genetic mutation, in her body, which if not controlled correctly could be fatal. And with her, now, carrying a foetus it concerns us..." Owens went silent and Joyce's eyes were widening each second she is angrier.
" The little girl will grow into a threat to all of us."
" A... A threat?! My granddaughter isn't an evil entity out to have world domination you know! She is still in her mother's belly! for crying out loud!" Joyce exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air, a humourless laugh left her. " Are you being freaking for real with me, Owens? Milly is my daughter, nor is she or my unborn grand kid a Threat! I won't sit here and let you name her this some kind of evil when the true evil is behind her misery. You got that, Doctor?"
Doctor Owens sighed.
" I understand, Joyce. I get it, parents think of their kids highly but the fact is we both know Melissa has never been a normal girl. I read her file." He specified, his use of the word Normal made the room tense. " You know it. I know it. We've seen the way it is with Melissa. It's not her first freak out and I have reports of her first meltdown she had, all those years back."
Joyce fell quiet, eyes burned with tears of repressed pain. Awful memories, she hope would not see the light of day again, came to surface. She spent thousands of hours, hundreds of her earned money, for therapists to help Melissa recover from her mental break downs. It didn't make her evil.
" See Joyce. I'm concerned this will only get more worse. That's why I had Melissa be brought in. You have to let us help her."
" By Killing my granddaughter? No. No way I am going to allow you to hurt her or Melissa!" Joyce snapped, furiously shaking her head at the evil thought of her granddaughter coming to harm. " Screw you all. I want will and Milly to be transferred to a real hospital. Where real doctors and real nurses can look after them."
" You know that isn't possible, Mrs. Byers. We both know Melissa, along with your son, will both get the best treatment here."
" And what exactly are they being treated for?! Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my boy and my girl? Why you are treating my little girl like she is this ticking time bomb that will for sure explode and kill everyone here?! I need an explanation and I need one NOW." Joyce then slammed each of her hands onto the sturdy, wooden, table which made it shake under her sudden forceful hit.
" Can anyone tell me what. Is. Wrong. With. My. KIDS?! Or I swear to god.."
Sam and his colleagues exchange glances, they had a feeling Joyce would put up a fight when it came to Melissa and will. You never piss off a mother, unless you want to feel the force of a mother's love and strong primitive instincts. They all simultaneously breathed out. This will be an extensive experience.
Amanda Sinclair remembered the first day that she saw Melissa Byers in the school yard, when Milly started her first day of kindergarten. She was a reserved, a girl who didn't trust anyone, stuck to watching kids on the bench. How little girl-version of Mandy was bullied, for her hair, and Milly came to her defence pushing the girl being mean onto the playgrounds floor.
She'd been called into the school counsellors office, scolded for using physical retaliation against a student. Young Milly didn't care And Joyce praised her.
She knew something was different about Milly. She saw the abnormalities, the unusual nature of what happened around her. She didn't see it as anything that made Melissa Joyce Byers a monster. She is her best friend. Her sister. To her, Milly Byers is the girl that would give her last sand which slice, if someone asked, like in school she did.
Katherine, seated on the other-side of the bed Milly laid in, knit picked at the replaced light blue scrubs the lab workers gave her. " Do you think she is going to be okay, Mandy? Both of em'?" She mumbled. " I can't lose her. She is.." Amanda understood Kathy's worries, leaning in to grip her hand. " I wouldn't know what I'd do, if I lose her or lost you too, Man'. I refuse.."
" She will come out of this okay. Both her little girl and herself, Kathy." Amanda strongly said. " God knows how much of a bad ass bitch Milly is. She has survived death once before and that is pretty damn awesome, I say. She is strong, I know she wouldn't want to leave the world this way."
Katherine did a small glance to Melissa, she is breathing normally and her face was peaceful. Her chest rising then falling gradually, steady. Amanda's hand found its way onto Milly's little stomach pouch, which held her growing baby, furrowing her brows at the fact the bump had considerably grown in length while Melissa is unconscious. That's impossible. Mandy softly glided her thumb over the edge of Milly's baby bump.
" Hey, girls. It's just me, bob." Bob announced, entering Melissa's 'hospital' room, bearing the entire contents of cafeteria food in his hands. " I brought snacks of every kind, I figured we are all going to be here a while. You girls need to eat and keep your energy up! Milly would be unhappy with me if I didn't bring food here." Joyce wasn't far off, coming back to the room, bee-lining for Melissa. She soothed out the tiny hairs on Milly's forehead. She lightly gasped at her daughter fidgeting in her sleep, both of her eyes open one after another. " Milly's awake!"
" Mom." Milly yawned, her eyes were looking and taking in her surroundings. " What.. what am I doing here? W..Why.. am I.. in this room? Again?" Milly flinched feeling a strange sense of movement inhabiting her body. She slightly looked at her stomach, untying her robe. Milly, inexplicably and unresponsive, feels her tummy frowning. Amanda distrusted the new energy coming off Milly, sceptically she turns to Katherine and Kathy reciprocated the fact there is definitely a difference in Milly. " What is this growing inside me? It feels.. strange."
Joyce worriedly stared at Bob then Katherine and Amanda. " Milly.. H-Honey, you're having a baby. Remember? A little girl." She went to touch Melissa, by her hand, and retracted her one feeling how Cold Milly is. First will didn't recognise Bob then Milly asking why her belly feels odd. Joyce feels dread sinking in. This is too much of a coincidence. The shadow thing. Will and Melissa not remembering. She didn't like it. Milly's face remains blank muttering an 'Oh'.
An hour goes on before doctor Owens came in. Hopper joining him. Joyce had explained how Melissa didn't recall her own child, how she is expecting a baby. Jim was warned by Joyce of Milly's short term amnesia, he didn't believe it until he tried to kiss Melissa on her head and she recoiled. That broke him seeing her reject his kiss. " And do you know your full name? Or the year you were born? Where you are now?"
Owens questions, flickering the torch light off of her eyes— finding nothing out of the usual.
Jim gripped the railing of Melissa's bed, which Joyce noticed placing a hand on his. Melissa's head looked around, at the scientists watching them, the wirings on her head scanning her brain activity itched her skin. Doctor Owens, pointing his pen at a nonchalant Jim Hopper, cocked his head.
" Do you know who he is?"
" Melissa.. Byers." Milly answered; it sounding like a question. Katherine, breaking off nails in her mouth, shifted her eyes to a dubious and unsettled Amanda. " I.. I don't know what year. I was born." Jim itched to hold her hand, as if sensing his obvious stares Melissa turns. It felt like hopper is looking at a stranger, not Milly Byers. The girl he loves, the mother of his kid.
" I... i.."
Not being able to handle the distance, Jim went on her level outstretching a hand and tenderly he pressed his palm in her face. He is desperate for her to remember. Jim could have sworn he saw a semblance of knowing in her eyes. " Baby, it's me. It's.. You..Your hopper." He softly spoke, he wanted to break through to Melissa. He wanted his Milly back.
" I.. don't remember.. I don't remember you. I am sorry."
Jim lightly puffed a sharp breath of air. Hurt in his eyes at her words. Why can't she remember him? Or that she is a Mom? He delicately left a kiss on her hand, which she surprisingly allows him to do.
" I do remember.. Something."
She, her voice monotone, stated.
" Those soldiers. I remember the fire. The pain I felt. They shouldn't have done that. I didn't... like that... He didn't like that. It upset him."
Doctor Owens pulled out a photograph of the shadow beast will had drawn, she had copies of it made for research and to keep on file for further reviewing, wanting to test a theory he thinks will resolve her memory loss.
" Okay. I wanna try something. It's going to seem a little odd at first, I did this with your brother will. I have a feeling it's going to help up understand what is going on here." A rolling station came into the room and a dead piece of the vine, which hopper was almost consumed in if it wasn't for Milly getting him out, is stuck inside of a container. " Now, Melissa, I want you just tell me or any of us here in this room if you do feel anything? Got it? Okay?" A scientist ignites a flaming torch, it caught Milly's eyes and Jim held her hand.
The torch went near the cut-off vine, the flame touching the first layer of slime on its slippery membrane. Melissa visibly showed discomfort. " No, Stop. Stop it, that hurts. That hurts.. stop it!" Milly's heart machine erratically starts to beep, faster and faster her heart races. ".. NO! STOP IT. STOP IT. It burns! It burns! Stop it!"
" Hey! You bastard!" Jim marched straight up to the research scientist, man-handling him by his coats collar, and he shook the man's body roughly. " You stop that right now or I swear to whatever god you pray for, I will shove that so far up your fucking ass you will be tasting your own stomach acid as it cooks in your stomach."
He growled, snapping his head to Melissa only to see her fearfully holding her stomach out of instinct. Joyce respected Milly's boundaries, in the entire process she scurried to her baby girls side even knowing if Melissa would shy away from it and gradually hopper released the man.
He caught her eyes, for a split second he saw a glimpse of his Milly. For a moment she was back but then she faded away at the back of her own conscious.
'Come back to me Milly, baby. Come back.'
JASMINE SPEAKS;
Milly lost her memory :(
I wonder why she lost her memory? ( I have a feeling we all know.) and who is responsible, for her amnesia. Like damn, I hurt myself writing those parts where she can't remember her own baby and hopper.
What did you think of hoppers reaction? How he made the scientist stop the torch? And how he was sad she couldn't remember him?
These last few chapters of the season are going to be hard to write, emotionally and mentally, cause I don't like how she is acting.
