Chapter 9

Streampaw's POV

"The Wind attacks. Revenge falls on members of Shadow. Falling needles will gather ones of blackness, stone, and swift paws, and rebel against the sturdy boulder. Wind will be removed from the forest, unless the swift paws and the bubbling stream can stop the falling needles."

I jerk awake as the strange dream ends, and look over at Swiftpaw. He's sorting herbs in the corner, but seems to feel my gaze on him and turns.

"Oh, you're awake," he says with a smile. "How'd you sleep?"

"I slept fine," I lie, and something flickers in his eyes. Does he know? Thinking over this, I shrug it off. He can't possibly know.

Swiftpaw looks me up and down. "Are you feeling better?"

"Much," I say, blinking at him. "Your friend Stonepaw seemed very nice, bringing me that mouse last night."

His eyes darken, and he looks at the floor. "You wouldn't say that if you lived here," he mutteres.

I tip my head curiously. "What do you mean?"

Swiftpaw shrugs. "It doesn't really matter," he says. "It's not like you're here to see it happen."

See what happen? "Swiftpaw, I really want to know what happens," I mew.

He hesitates, then sighs. "I can see you're not going to stop asking till I do," he laughs. "Alright then. Well-"

"Swiftpaw!" Graywind pushes her way through the camp entrance. "You're needed out here. Bouldstar's injured badly. She was on patrol with her warriors and fell down a steep hill."

I watch as Swiftpaw races out of the den, then stand shakily and follow him. Immediately, Stonepaw is at my side.

"Are you alright?" he asks, his amber eyes clearly full of concern, and I nod.

"Just a bit tired," I reply.

"You wait here, I'll get you something to eat," he offers. "What do you like? Crow? Vole? We have some rabbit, too."

I blink at him. "You don't have to get me anything," I say. "I can get it myself."

It comes out harsher than I meant it to, and Stonepaw flinches.

"No, it's not like that," I mew hurriedly. "Um, rabbit please." He brightens and nods, then dashes off to the prey pile.

As I wait for him to come back, I watch as Swiftpaw runs his forepaw over Boulderstar's hind leg. It doesn't look twisted, but the leader is moaning in pain.

"It's been jolted out of its socket," I here Swiftpaw announce. "Someone get her something to bite down on."

I watch as a brownish-ginger tabby with icy-blue eyes pads over to a corner of camp and grabs a sturdy-looking twig, then walks back over and drops it next to Swiftpaw.

"Thanks, Tigerfrost," he mews, and the she-cat nods. Swiftpaw pushes the stick to Boulderstar. "When you feel it start to hurt, concentrate on biting down on the stick," he murmers softly. "It helps you ignore the pain."

Boulderstar grabs the stick in her jaws and prepares to bite down on it, watching as Swiftpaw orders Tigerfrost to hold her forelegs and another warrior - I think his name is Blazingheart - to hold her midsection.

Then Swiftpaw pushes her leg up and forward, and although Boulderstar yowls through the stick, I can hear a slight pop as the bone is relocated.

I turn as Stonepaw returns, carrying a huge rabbit, and I race over to help him. "I could have helped you bring it over," I purr through rabbit fur, and he shrugs.

"You said you were tired," he says. "So I got it for you." We set it down and I begin to eat.

I look up as Stonepaw starts to turn away. "Um, we can share," I say, and he turns back around, ears twitching.

"Thanks, Streampaw." He smiles at me, and we eat the rabbit together.

================================

I lay in the medicine den once more, and I keep thinking I hear rustling outside the wall. Looking around to make sure no one else is in the den, I stand and walk over to the bramble wall of the medicine den and press my ear against it.

My eyes widen as I hear whispers. I can't make out the words, or who's speaking, but they are there.

"What's wrong?" I jump and spin around as Stonepaw comes into the den.

"I think your camp's under attack," I whisper, eyes darting back to the wall.

His own eyes widen, and he pushes past me to press his ear against the wall.

He pulls away and runs out of the den. "Every cat wake up!" he screeches. "We're under attack!"

At that moment, Windclan warriors explode through the camp entrance, pelts bristling and and eyes blazing, teeth bared and ears back.

"Where is she?" I hear Flaresoul snarl, and I feel like I'm shrinking inside my pelt. They've come here for me!

Stonepaw starts to lead me away. "We have to hide you," he says frantically. "We can't let them-"

"They're here for me, Stonepaw," I say. "If you don't want this battle, then I have to go with them. They're my Clan."

His eyes are sad, but he nods and let's me go back out. I push my way through tussling groups of cats, claws unsheathed.

Something heavy lands on me from behind, and I grunt as I fall. I look up to see Pinepaw.

"What are you doing?" I spit. "Do you want your Clanmates to get hurt?"

"It's too late for that," he snarls. "This was your plan all along! To earn Shadowclan's trust, and then have your Clan take over ours. Well, it isn't going to happen."

He starts dragging me somewhere, and even though I struggle, it's no use. I start to hear the roar of monsters and I struggle harder. I know where he's taking me. The Thunderpath!

I hear Windclan warriors following, and call out, "I'm over here!"

Pinepaw stops by the edge of the Thunderpath, amber eyes gleaming as  Flaresoul, Sunstar, and Silverpaw all scramble to astop, eyes widening.

Pinepaw drops me and shoves me so half my body is one the Thunderpath and places a paw on my neck, claws unsheathed.

"No one move!" he snarls. "No one move, or this cat dies!"

My heart is pounding. Every day, I've been fearing that I'm going to be in Flaresoul's, Sunstar's, and Silverpaw's place, unable to do anything accept watch. But here I am. I'm the one trapped.

Shadowclan and Windclan warriors show up behind the three already there, staring in horror at Pinepaw and I at the edge of the Thunderpath.

Bouldstar limps to the front of the crowd. "What is the meaning of this?" she growls.

"Don't you see, Shadowclan?" Pinepaw raises his voice. "Streampaw was never injured. She was never hurt. She was just working with her Clan to get our territory! She was the bait, the distraction, and who fell for it?"

His eyes search the crowd and land on a white tom. "Swiftpaw did!"

Swiftpaw and Graywind step angrily forward. "Who's the medicine cat here?" Swiftpaw snaps.

Pinepaw spits angrily. "Exactly! You're working with her. You were never loyal. You just wanted to get back at us for teasing you!"

The medicine cat apprentice crouched as if to leap at Pinepaw, but Graywind steps in front of him.

"Pinepaw, let Streampaw up this instant," Boulderstar hisses.

Pinepaw narrows his eyes and press down a little harder on my neck. Every cat stops. I grimace as I feel the claws prick my skin.

"I warned you," he hisses, and kicks me into the path of the monsters.
