Chapter 1

Streamkit's POV

I wriggle around in a soft but scratchy thing I am on top of, attempting to get comfortable. All I see is darkness. And then, I hear voices.

"When will she open her eyes?"

"When she wants to, dear. Be patient. You can take her out of the den when she does."

I recognize the second voice. My mother! But the first is unfamiliar to me, a stranger in the world I have yet to explore. I open my tiny mouth and let out a soft mew. For a moment, the noise stops, and I sense eyes on me. I let out another mew, louder this time. I feel something rough licking the top of my head in rythymic strokes, and I squeak in protest.

Chuckles eddy around me, which gets me angry. I decide to open my eyes right then and there. So I do. And I gasp. I'm laying in a soft, scratchy nest, the thing I realize I was trying to get comfortable in minutes ago. Soft light filters through what seems to be a roof above me. I blink my eyes and mew again.

This time, I see four pairs of eyes turn my way, and I hear gasps escape from four mouths.

"She's opened her eyes!"

I squeak in confusion and surprise as I'm knocked to the ground by some whirlwind of dark silver fur. A purr escapes my throat as I struggle to push the weight off.

After a few seconds, the weight lifts and I leap to my paws. I squeak again as I stumble, my legs trembling. I gaze around the den, and then at the cats in it. There were five, me included.

I turn my gaze to the silver whirlwind.

"Look at her eyes!" the cat gasps. All eyes meet mine, and once again gasps echo around me.

"They're so blue," murmurs a queen.

"I wish mine were that color," mutters another kit. I take note of his appearance. Russet tabby with greyish-green eyes. He catches me staring and glares, and I whip my eyes away quickly.

The cat who is my mother look at me. "Streamkit," she says after a moment. I tilt my head curiously.

"That's your name, silly," the silver kit says. "And my name's Silverkit."

I glance at her eyes, and notice they are a dark brown. I wanna go see what my eyes look like! I think, excited.

Without waiting, I dart out of the den. A squeak from Silverkit tells me I've surprised her, and the frantic pad of paws tells me she's chasing. I give a laugh of excitement, which she echoes.

I notice a puddle in the camp and dash over. Checking my reflection, I notice my eyes are a vibrant blue.

"How are you so fast?" Silverkit squeaks, catching up to me. My reply is just a laugh as I dart off again

My laugh is interrupted as I bump into a mass of dark red fur and bounce back, surprised. I look up to see a cat much taller than me, and much stronger. My gaze flicks to the powerful muscles rippling beneath his pelt and then the sharp claws that are unsheathed.

"Watch where you're going, kit," he snaps.

Obviously not a cheerful type, I note. And then my gaze flicks to his eyes, and his eyes meet mine. We seem to share the same expression. Shock and confusion. But the warrior's face reads one that mine does not: fear.

After a moment, he snorts and steps around me. Silverkit nudges me and I act like I've shaken off his stare and take off after her as she races away. But I can't forget the color of his eyes...

They are a vibrant blue.
