Chapter 6: 

The theory of love

[At the moment

As I stood in front of the class to take care of the remaining students who had no seats, I suddenly told Kaito to sit in the back near the window and after when Kaito sat in his new seat near the window, I quickly ordered Benjie sat down next to Kaito.

But, when Kaito heard what I said to Benjie, he immediately stand in his seat and said: "Hey, Jelai! What's the meaning of this! Why did Benjie sit next to me?!"

As Kaito feels annoyed because of what I did, Gun and Kevin suddenly laugh when they saw Kaito being annoyed when he found out Benjie was his new seatmate aka study buddy.

"Oh, Benjie and Kaito seem destined to be study buddies." (Kevin speak from his new study desk as if he teases Kaito and Benjie with a smirk.)

"Please Jelai, I won't let that idiot become my seatmate and study buddy!" (Kaito told me as he feel annoyed at Benjie.)

As I watched Kaito still won't accept that he and Benjie were sitting next to each other, I thought of making an excuse to allow him to respect my decision.

"Sorry, Kaito, but the new seating arrangement list I'm holding right now was from our homeroom teacher, and as a spokesperson and the president in this class, it's my responsibility to be a good example for everyone that we need to respect what the homeroom teacher decision." (I told Kaito as I standing in the class.)

After I say those words to Kaito, he has no choice to accept his fate to become Benjie's new seatmate and study buddy and after I finished arranging our new seating arrangement for the preparation of the upcoming prelim examination, Benjie and Kaito still don't pay attention to each other.

It seems that Kevin's plan didn't succeed because earlier, Gun, Kevin, and I went to that teacher's faculty to talk to our homeroom teacher and when the three of us got there, I immediately talk to our teacher to let her know that Kevin has a good idea about how to raise Benjie's grade in the upcoming exam.

Kevin gives advice to our homeroom teacher to make Benjie and Kaito become study buddy but Kevin told our teacher that to fulfill his plan, our homeroom teacher must give me the authority to make a new seating arrangement for everyone, and luckily our teacher agreed Kevin's plan but even our plan succeeded to make Benjie and Kaito become seatmate, I still feel sorry for Benjie because even though he and Kaito are sitting next to each other, Kaito still doesn't pay attention to him and after five hours, the university bell suddenly rang indicating that our class was over and after a minute, our classmates went out in our classroom to go home but as my other classmate went out in our classroom... Kaito immediately put his things inside in his backpack and after he put his thing inside his backpack, he immediately approach me."Jelai, take me to the cheap condo unit you told me earlier."

As Kaito talked to me about a cheap condo unit nearby, I couldn't take my eyes off Benjie as he still sat in his chair, I could feel the crushing of his heart but whatever pity I feel for him, I still can't change that Kaito chose to ignore him.

After I put all my things inside my bag, Kaito and I decides to go to the cheap condo unit I know, and as the both of us walked towards the location of the cheap condo unit, I still thinking about Benjie so I thought to ask Kaito about something.

"Kaito, can I ask something?" (I ask Kaito as I walk next to him.)

"Go ahead, you can ask me anything." (Kaito told me as he drinking the milk tea he bought outside our university.)

"What kind of person is Benjie when he was still a kid?" (I ask Kaito.)

At that time, because of my question, Kaito suddenly stop drinking his milk tea, and after a few seconds, he thought to answer my question as he walked next to me.

"Benjie is a type of person who hates eating a carrot, he's a type of person who is always smiling, energetic, strong and so playful when he is always with me but when we were classmates in grade school, I found out that in the behind of his playful smiles, he's going through something I don't quite think of." (Kaito told me as he suddenly walked as he stared at the other kids playing at the playground.)

"Benjie overshadows his cheerful personality because of the ridicule of some of our classmates for being an illegitimate child of him and because of that, I decided to become his shining armor before my parents send me abroad, I decided to befriend him to repay him for the days he always there for me to make me happy... my memories with Benjie are already stamping on my heart that's the reason why I withdraw the student petition against him and  meeting him was one of the best things that ever happened in my life." (Kaito told me as he stared at the kids who play at the playground.)

"But now, why can't you forgive him for what he did to you when you're in America?" (I asked Kaito.)

"Well, to be honest, when I was in America, I thought Benjie was always there for me the way we used to be when we were kids but the pain that Benjie gave me when he ignored all my calls is the same feeling I felt when the person I love abandoned me when I was living in America and that's the reason that's why I hate Benjie because he exacerbated the painful memories I experienced when I was still living in America." (Kaito told me.)

"So are you saying that you blaming Benjie for the pain you felt right now?" (I ask Kaito.)

"No, that's not what I mean to say but when the time I need him the most, he forgets and abandoned me! and that's the main reason I hate him so much!" (Kaito told me as he suddenly become emotional.)

"Yes, you're right about that part that Benjie ignored your call when you're in America but it doesn't mean he forget his feelings towards you." (I told Kaito.)

"What are you talking about, Jelai?" (Kaito asks me.)

"A year ago... when because of Benjie's good looking and charming personality, whenever other girls on campus confessed their feelings to Benjie, he will immediately reject them because he always says to the girls that no one can replace his love he felt for his childhood friend and at that time, I thought the childhood friend he was referring to was Dianne but I was wrong."  (I told Kaito as I recall the day I saw Benjie with the girl named Irene.)

"Don't tell me that---!" (Kaito.)

"Yes, Kaito, when you ask me about why Benjie wants to date you, I thought it was impossible for Benjie to date you because he always told the other girls about his childhood friend but without my knowing, the childhood friend of Benjie he always referring was you, Kaito... that's explain everything why Benjie wants to date you because he already fell in love with you back then and he prefers to love you even if you don't know how he feels, and that's also the reason why Benjie ignored you when you were in America because he really thought when you called his mom, you would come back here to the Philippines to fulfill your promise to him." (I told Kaito.)

"What's the promise you talking about?" (Kaito stuttering asks me.)

"Earlier, Gun told me that nine years ago, you left a promise to Benjie that you would come back to him so Benjie thought when you called his mom a year ago, Benjie thought that would come back here but unfortunately when Benjie's mom asks you if you had planned to go back here to the Philippines, you answered Benjie's mom that you had no plan to go back here, that's the reason why Benjie ignored all your calls because if he pays attention to you more, he will expect you to come back here even more." (I told Kaito.)

As the leaves on the tree fall like snow, Kaito was suddenly stunned by what he heard from me and after a few seconds, he suddenly run back towards our university. 

"Kaito, where are you going?" (I yell at Kaito.)

"I need to talk to Benjie." (Kaito told me as he ran towards our university.)

After Kaito left to go back to the university to talk to Benjie, I immediately grabbed my phone and call Kevin and Gun to inform them.

[Phone call]

"Guys, I have good news." (I happily to speak at Gun's phone.)

"Is this about Kaito went back to our university to talk to Benjie? haha." (Kevin answered me using Gun's phone.)

"Wait, how did you guys know!?" (I ask Gun and Kevin on the phone call.)

"Just look behind your back." (Gun told me on the phone call.)

At that time, when I turned around, I immediately saw the two idiots riding at the playground seesaw as they ate a popsicles ice cream so I thought to approach them.

"Hey, don't tell me the both of you following me and Kaito since the both of us left our university?" (I ask Kevin and Gun.)

"No, we don't." (Gun told me as he focused himself eating his popsicles ice cream as he sat at playground seesaw.)

"Then why the both of you are here?" (I ask Gun and Kevin.)

"Well, as Gun and I went to the 7/11 nearby to buy these popsicles ice cream, we coincidentally saw you and Kaito walking towards the playground nearby so we thought to follow the both of you to give these remaining popsicles we bought but when Gun and I heard that you guys are talking about Benjie then we thought to hide to find out why the two of you talking about Benjie." (Kevin told me as he gives me a popsicle ice cream.)

As Kevin and I were talking about what Kaito and I talking about earlier, Gun's phone suddenly rang and when Gun looked at his cellphone to see who was calling him, the expression on his face suddenly turned into a serious one those eyes are similar when I ask him about Benjie's past.

"Excuse me guys, I have to answer this call." (Gun told us with a smile on his face.)

When Gun walked away from us to answer the call, I thought to ask Kevin a question about Gun.

"Hey, Kevin, don't you notice that Gun seems so strange?" (I whispery ask Kevin.)

"Strange? (Chuckles) It's normal for me to see him always act like that." (Kevin told me as he chuckles.)

"What I mean is, it seems that he hiding something from us." (I ask Gun as I looked at Gun.)

"Nah, stop overthinking okay, I know Gun from head to toe, I know he's a good person, in fact, he's a church kid since birth." (Kevin told me as he touch my left shoulder.)

At that time, when I heard Kevin say about "Church kid" I immediately ask him about it.

"Don't tell me Gun grew up in a catholic orphanage like me!?" (I ask Kevin as I am surprised about what I found out about Gun.)

"Huh? what are you talking about?" (Kevin told me as he was confused about what I'm saying.)

After a second, Kevin suddenly realized what I said to him "Wait, what!? are you you are from a Catholic orphanage?"

"Yeah, I am (Jelai suddenly upset as she remembered her memories from the Catholic orphanage).... but let's back to the main topic... what do you mean about Gun being a church kid since birth?" (I told and ask Kevin.)

"Well, because of his dad's works as the church evangelist, Gun grew up always going to church that's the reason why I keep telling you Gun is a good person." (Kevin told me as he focused ate his popsicles ice cream.)

Note: Evangelist is a person who seeks to convert others to the Christian faith, especially by public preaching.

"But who's the person he talking to on his phone now? as far as I know, you and Benjie are Gun's only friends at our university." (I ask Kevin with curiosity.)

"Well, when someone calls Gun on his phone, he immediately answers it privately but, don't worry, because it looks like Gun is just talking to his father because as far as I know, he lives with his father since he's a kid and moreover, I believe Gun can't imitate Benjie's former friend who betrayed Benjie four years ago." (Kevin told me with a smile on his lips.)

After a few seconds, Kevin quiklcy cover his mouth because he realize that he told me something shouldn't be told.

"Are you saying that Benjie has a friend before you and Gun?" (I ask Kevin.)

"Well, yeah, he has two friends named James and Cedric but it's better if we don't talk about that anymore because those are the reasons why Benjie bullied some of our schoolmates because they always mentioned to Benjie what happened to him inside our university four years ago so if I were you, we would focus more on the present than the past because the past is just a part of our lives that we cannot change or go back and moreover, Benjie is no longer making a mess thanks to Kaito, that's the most wonderful happen in the present." (Kevin told me as he touches my shoulder with a smile on his lips.)

"Yeah, you're right." (I told Kevin with a smile on my lips.)

As I smiled, I suddenly notice that Kevin suddenly blushed as if he saw something behind my back.

"Hey, why are you blushing, you idiot!" (I told Kevin with seriousness.)

"Me? Why could I?" (Kevin told me as he run away from me and kept looking behind my back.) 

At that moment, as I chasing Kevin, I suddenly stop running when he saw someone blocking his way and the person who suddenly appeared in front of him was Benjie's ex-girlfriend named Dianne and when Kevin saw Dianne in front of him, he quickly run away but unfortunately, before Kevin run away from her... Dianne immediately stops him by grabbing his university polo.

"I don't have enough money to pay off my debts okay!" (Kevin told Dianne as he cover his head.)

"I am not here to charge you for your debts, I just want you to show me some of Kaito's photos." (Dianne asks Kevin with a smile on his lips.)

"Wait, how did you find out about Kaito!?" (Kevin ask Dianne as Dianne still grabbing his university polo.)

"Just show me his photo, okay." (Dianne told Kevin with a sweet smile.)

But before Kevin gives what Dianne asking from him, Gun suddenly approach Dianne and said:

"Kevin doesn't have to give you what you ask for so stop harassing him!" (Gun told Dianne as he gives Dianne his remaining cash in his wallet with a fierce look.)

After Gun say those words to Dianne, he immediately grabbed me and Kevin to leave Dianne.

"I just want to see how attractive and charming Kaito is, okay! so guys, please show me some of his photos! I'm begging you!" (Dianne yells at Gun and Kevin.)

But as Dianne feels annoyed at Kevin and Gun. The people around the playground started to look at her.

[P.O.V] Kaito Almasen (Kai)

After I heard Jelai's story about Benjie, I immediately run towards our university as I felt remorse within my heart. I don't know why but I don't want to hurt Benjie the same way Anne abandoned and rejected my feelings.

After four minutes of running towards our university, I finally arrive in our classroom and when I entered our classroom, I immediately saw Benjie still sitting on his chair as he writing something on a piece of paper.

When Benjie saw me entering our classroom, he was suddenly startled and he quickly stood up.

"Kai!?" (Benjie suddenly asks me.)

At that moment, I suddenly lost my confidence to talk to Benjie as I tried to ignore his glance at me but at that time, when Benjie saw me feel uncomfortable, he suddenly approaches me and give me a letter... after Benjie give me the letter he wrote, he decides to go out to our classroom to go home.

At that time, I quickly open read the letter made by Benjie.

[Benjie's letter]

Dear, Kai (with a smile emoji)  🙂

"Kai, I know everything has changed between us, I know that you know I've made a lot of mistakes that I don't want to happen to you again and I know that thousands of forgiveness aren't enough to forgive someone like me that's why I just want to know that I'm okay if you won't' accept the love I feel for you but even if you won't accept me into your life again, It doesn't mean that the way I feel for you will change, I made a promise to myself that whatever happened to us in the future, I choose you and I'll choose you over and over and over. without pause, without a doubt in a heartbeat, I'll keep choosing you because you deserve to own my heart ."

After I read Benjie's letter, I quickly went out into our classroom to look for him and when I saw him walking away, I immediately yell at him "Hey, Benjie, please talk to me!" 

But even I yell, scold and beg at him, he didn't stop walking away from me that's why I have no choice to grab his right hand to stop walking away from me. "What do I have? Why do you love me?"

At that moment, Benjie suddenly turns around at me and said: "I don't know, okay."

"But I need to know why you loved me so give me a specific answer why do you love me." (I told Benjie as I grab his hand to stop him from walking away from me.)

"Did I really have a reason to love you?" (Benjie told me as he looked at me into my eyes.)

At that moment, when I heard what Benjie tell me, my grip on his hand suddenly loosened and after a second, Benjie continued walking away from me and as I watched him walking away from me, I suddenly yell at him."You like me, right?" 

"Of course, I'm deeply in love with you and I'm serious about how I feel for you." (Benjie told me with teary eyes.)

"Okay, then let's make a deal! if you make me in love with you in 3 months, I will allow you to be your boyfriend." (I told Benjie with no emotion on my face.)

When Benjie heard what I said to him, he was suddenly surprised with a mix of excitement in his eyes.

"Are you serious? can you please repeat what you said to me?" (Benjie told me with a smile on his face.)

"Do you think I am stupid? Why should I repeat what I said to you earlier, and stop pretending, okay, I know you heard what I said to you earlier." (I told Benjie.)

"Why it's only three months?" (Benjie asked me as he followed me.)

"How about two days? I think you have the confidence to make me fall in love with you in just two days ... Instead of 3 months, I'll make it two days so that other people who are secretly in love with me have a chance to take my heart away from you." (I told Benjie as I walked towards the exit of our university.)

"Geez! Okay, three months is enough but right now, can I date you, let's hang out, I know a place that has delicious food." (Benjie told me with a smile on his face.)

"Are you crazy? Aren't you worried about the upcoming prelim exam?" (I frankly ask Benjie as I look at him with seriousness.)

Honestly, I don't know why I told Benjie to make me fall in love for three months but so far as I know, this is the only way, I can't hurt his feelings and In fact, I don't have any feelings for Benjie but for an unknown reason, I'm just trying to open my heart for Benjie.

I don't want to reject the love he felt for me and I also don't what to lose him, I don't know if I am ready for everything that should happen between me and Benjie.

Even though I don't know the consequences of my action in the future about the decision to open my heart for Benjie but hopefully, one day, I will find the answer to what Benjie's heart is asking me. 

An answer I knew in myself was that I couldn't hurt Benjie's heart.

[P.O.V] Jelai Villanueva 

[Time check 5: 15 P.M]

[10 minutes after Gun, Jelai, and Kevin left Dianne at the playground park]

"Is it okay for us to leave her like that?" (I suddenly ask Kevin and Gun.)

"That witch (Dianne) is the craziest spoiled brat in our university so it would be better if we get away from her before she thinks of harassing us to get what she needs from us." (Kevin told me.)

"But why does she know about Kaito?" (I suddenly ask Kevin and Gun.)

"Kaito becomes popular within our university when he fights Benjie using the student petition, and as far as I know... Kaito, Benjie, and Dianne are in the same school when they study in grade school... that's the reason why Dianne knew immediately that Kaito was back when she heard the main complainant of Benjie's student petition was Benjie's childhood friend, and I had bad feelings that she wants to steal Kaito from Benjie just like she always told us back then." (Kevin told me.)

"I don't think Dianne can take Kaito away from Benjie," Gun spoke as he walked beside Kevin with no emotion on his face.)

"Why did you say she couldn't take Kaito from Benjie?" (I suddenly ask Gun.)

"Benjie won't let Dianne take Kaito away from him and moreover, Benjie is like a dog who always tailing Kaito." (Gun told me with a smirk.)

At that moment, Kevin and I suddenly laugh so hard because of what we heard from Gun.

"But seriously guys, even though we know that Dianne is incapable to steal Kaito from Benjie, we still have to watch her every move because that girl is so unpredictable." (Gun spoke with seriousness.)

"Yeah, you're right Gun, just leave it to me, I'll watch her every move and I won't let her touch Benjie's future wife!" (Kevin told Gun as he shivered with Dianne.)

As Kevin being shivered with Dianne, unexpectedly, Dianne suddenly showed up in front of us.

"Do you think the both of you (Gun and Kevin) can easily escape from me just like that?" (Dianne told Gun and Kevin while she was sweating from running.)

But out of the blue, when Dianne showed in front of us, Kevin suddenly pretended he saw Kaito behind Dianne, and after a second, when Dianne turned around, Kevin immediately grabbed me and Gun to escape from Dianne again.

"Do you think you can easily catch us as you think? you stupid witch! hahaha." (Kevin yell at Dianne as he teases her.)
