Chapter 4:

The emptiness of the past

[P.O.V] Benjamin de Guzma (Benjie)

Today was my first day to do my assigned job as a temporary janitor on campus but while I was peacefully sweeping the floor with my janitorial mop, some students passing by looked at me as if they were gossiping to me but when I looked back at them with my fierce look, they immediately run away from me like an idiot.

"Poor Benjie, your old childhood friend told you to do this janitorial service within the university but reminds me, why did you agree to do this dirty work? Have you ever forgotten that you are the son of the richest shareholder here in our university!?" (Kevin asks me as he eats junk food.)

"Well, Yesterday, I told Kai that when I prove to him that I can change, he will allow me to date him." (I told Kevin as I focused myself on sweeping the floor.)

At that moment, Gun and Kevin were suddenly surprised because of what I said.

"Wait! What!? Are you fucking serious!? that's too fast dude!" (Kevin told me as he was surprised by what he heard from me.)

"Ohhh... I see, you really confess your feelings to him that you like him?" (Gun asks me.)

"I think so." (I told Kevin as I focused myself on sweeping the floor with a smile on my lips.)

"But, what's Kaito's reaction when you told him that you wanted to date him?" (Kevin asks me.)

"Well, after I confessed my feeling towards him, he suddenly startled and immediately ran away from me." (I told Gun.)

At that moment, after Kevin and Gun heard what I said, they suddenly take a heavy breath at the same time.

"Jeez, I forgot that you're so stupid as I expected!" (Kevin told me as he feel frustrated because of me.)

"Why? Did I do something wrong?" (I asked Kevin as I was confused.)

"Yeah, you really did something wrong because you made Kaito think that you are definitely crazy and weirdo, because you didn't tell him the reason why you wanted to date him that's why, he immediately ran away from you and if I was in Kaito's situation at that time, I immediately ran away and stay away from you from now on."  (Gun told me.)

When I heard Gun's thoughts about my confession with Kai, I suddenly feel frustrated with myself as I starts to panic and said "So what should I do now!?"

"Well, give us some time to think of what can we advise on the stupidity you did." (Gun told me as he held his eyeglasses like a genius brat.)

"Yeah, Gun and I felt hungry so let's see each other in the cafeteria after your work." (Kevin teased me as he showed me my wallet he secretly took in my pocket.)

After I saw my wallet in Kevin's hands, they immediately run away to go to the cafeteria so I thought to chase them to take my wallet back before I act to chase them, the janitor's manager who watches over me to see if I'm doing my job is suddenly looking at me badly and because of that stared, I decide not to chase my stupid friend for the sake of my future with Kai.

[P.O.V] Kaito Almasen (Kai)

I don't know why I'm doing this but right now, I feel like I'm weirdo watching around just to avoid Benjie.

I don't know why I'm trying to avoid him but because of what I heard from Benjie yesterday, I start to confuse about his gender identity.

After a minute of hiding just to avoid Benjie, I finally arrive at my respective classroom, and when saw Jelai sitting on her chair,  I immediately approach her to ask something about Benjie and after a minute, I quickly took Jelai to the university rooftop so that, we can talk privately.

"Why are we here, Kaito?" (Jelai asked me as she looked around.)

"How many years have you been studying here?" (I quickly ask Jelai as I feel nervous.)

"Well... I start studying here when I was in 10th grade but all of sudden, why did you ask me these things?" (Jelai asks me as she stares at me suspiciously.)

"Ha~Ha~Ha, I see... so you already know Benjie then huh." (I awkwardly speak to Jelai as I avoid Jelai's gaze on me.)

At that time, when I mentioned Benjie in our conversation, she suddenly smell something fishy at me.

"Wait a minute... Did Benjie do something to you again!?" (Jelai suddenly asks me with seriousness.)

"No! No... (Waving my both hands) Benjie did nothing to me." (I quickly told Jelai as my face blushed.)

"But, why did you ask me if I knew Benjie?" (Jelai asked me as she slowly approaches me.)

"Because he told something weird to me  yesterday that makes me confused." (I told Jelai as I took a heavy breath.)

"Something weird? What did Benjie say to you?" (Jelai asked me.)

"Yesterday at the rooftop, Benjie told me that when he proves himself he can change and he won't do bad things here at university, I will allow him to date me." (I told Jelai as I feel embarrassed as I recall what happened yesterday.)

"Ahhhh .. is that so." (Jelai clueless.)

After a second, Jelai suddenly realized what I said to her and at that moment, she suddenly startled and shouted "WAIT!!!!!!!! WHAT??!!"

At that time, her screams were heard around the rooftop so I told her to lower her voice.

"Are you fucking serious about what you said to me, Kaito?" (Jelai stuttering asked me as she suddenly grabbed my both shoulder.)

"Yeah, why?" (I ask Jelai as I look away from Jelai's face as I blushed.)

"But based on the humor spread around the campus, Benjie already has an ex-girlfriend named Dianne but I haven't heard any humor about Benjie being a Bisexual." (Jelai said to me.)

"Girlfriend?" (I suddenly ask myself.)

"Don't worry, Kaito because it's just humor, no one is confirming that Benjie and Dianne really became lovers." (Jelai told me as she touch my shoulder and gives me a teasing smirk.)

"I'm not interested in any kind of relationship he's been through okay!" (I quiklcy told Jelai as my face blushed.)

"You said so." (Jelai told me with a smirk.)

"Let's go back to the main topic, why did Benjie say those words to me? about dating me." (I quickly asked Jelai.)

"Why don't you ask yourself why Benjie told you that? Weren't you friends when you were kids?" (Jelai suddenly asks me.)

"Hmm... I admit that we were friends when we were kids and the way he act like a childish brat was the same as I knew Benjie before but now, he has changed a lot and even his first and last name changed that's why I'm asking you about him." (I told Jelai as I stared at nowhere herein the university rooftop.)

[Author's note]: We all know that Kaito always mentioned his childhood friend named "Ben" in the previous chapters but without Kaito's knowing... when Benjie accepts his father's offer to study in a university where his father is one of the shareholders, Benjie's father decides to change his son's name from "Ben Seranno" into "Benjamin S. de Guzman"... Benjie's old surname "Seranno" came from his mother's surname, that explains why Benjie was always bullied by his classmates back in grade school because he uses his mother's surname as his surname back in grade school... This scenario is also the same with my ex-boyfriend, he also uses his mother's surname because his mom and dad aren't married, in short, my ex-boyfriend is an illegitimate child of his father BUT this is just a coincidence LOL, this is the first time I realized that my ex and Benjie has the same situation BUT I didn't use my ex as Benjie's character reference.

"Honestly, Kaito... I don't know how to answer your question about Benjie's real gender identity but I know someone who can answer your question why Benjie tells you those weird words yesterday." (Jelai told me with a smile on her lips.)

"Who?" (I quickly asked Jelai.)

"You'll ask his stupid friends (Gun and Kevin) because they are the ones who know how stupid Benjie is." (Jelai told me with a smile on her lips.)

"As far as I know, Benjie is doing his job as a temporary janitor at this moment, so where can I find his friends?" (I ask Jelai.)

"If Benjie wasn't with his friends at this moment, then, they would probably be sitting at Benjie's VIP bluish table at the university cafeteria." (Jelai told me with a smile on her lips.)

"VIP bluish table?" (I suddenly ask Jelai as I am clueless.)

"Benjie has his own personal cafeteria table herein the university, his dad made that VIP table for him because he knew his son was stupid and troublesome." (Jelai told me with a smirk.)

After Jelai and I talked about Benjie on the rooftop, I thought went to the university cafeteria to ask them about Benjie's real gender identity but as I was on my way to the university cafeteria, I coincidentally met Gun in the hallway.

"Gun, can we talk about Benjie?" (I suddenly asked Gun.)

"Is this about what Benjie told you that he wanted to date you?" (Gun asks me.)

"How did you know!?" (I asked Gun as I was surprised.)

"Well, let just say that I know my friend Benjie from head to toe because of his dad, but unfortunately, I have no right to tell you what's the main reason why Benjie wants to date you but I want you to know that Benjie has been waiting for you to come back to the Philippines for almost nine years." (Gun told me.)

"He waits for me?" (I ask Gun as I am confused and clueless.)

"Wait, Did you forget that you made a promise to him nine years ago?" (Gun suddenly asks me.)

At that moment... I was suddenly speechless and paused at what Gun asking me.

After Gun and I talked... I thought to walk around the campus but as I walked around to give myself time to think, I coincidentally saw Benjie doing his job as a temporary janitor in the basic education department and as I watched him from far away, I can see he isn't used to the job I gave him as a temporary janitor.

But as most know, I am the main reason why Benjie ended up in this miserable situation and as I watched him, I could clearly see he was really trying his best to perform his job as a temporary janitor and at the same time, I feel sorry for him and I didn't want to see him doing this job anymore so I thought of approaching to tell him he didn't have to make our agreement but out of the blue, before I nearly approach him, I suddenly paused when I saw someone approach Benjie.

At that moment, I had no idea who the pretty girl was but the way the pretty girl talked to Benjie seemed they're close to each other and as I watched them together, I suddenly remembered a similar scene when I was still in America.

As I recall the painful memories I want to forget, I also remember what Benjie did to me when I was in America.

Because of what Benjie did to me when the time I need him the most, I decided not to get in touch with him anymore. I know it's hard for me to avoid him within this university but I have to, Just to recompense him for what he did to me.
