To the first guy,

she asked what will you do if I were to jump

Off the highest mountain

Or into the deepest ocean.

He said darling, don't you stress your little mind,

I will jump and fall whenever needed,

We will share the pain together,

And never be separated.

I will even soar through the sky and space with you

Although that means our lungs shall run out of air.

Thus even when you can no longer find your way home,

I'll be your companion wandering till death comes our way.

She then asked the second guy,

What if one day someone sets me on fire

Will you take the lighter

And burn with me to dust forever?

[She asked, thinking he would give a similar answer as the first gentleman.]

But he paused before answering,

Feeling hot and wild with anger,

Clenching his fist he exhaled deeply

Caught in bewilderment of her for even thinking that -

[His lips moved without thinking - as if having a soul of itself- something he couldn't fathom]

Honey, you would never be in a place where you would be

Beaten, shattered or painted in black and blue.

For I would protect you from all harm,

Over and over to prove I love you.

I wouldn't dare to speak of these three sacred words

If I would allow such a thing to happen.

To say that anything or anyone could hurt you

Is an insult from your sweet yet cruel and honest lips.

Even if that 'someone' does come to harm you,

Let my arms be the shield to cover you.

He could burn me to crisp but never touch you.

To forever remain in joy are all I want from you.

Explanation

In this poem, I present to you two different types of love in contrast. From the first guy, we see how he is willing to go through hell with her. If she jumps, he jumps and if she drowns, so does he. Wherever she's going and whatever happens, he wants to be the one to share the experience with her, good or bad.

As for the second guy, he felt attacked by the idea that she dared to even test his love for her, 'as if I would let any harm come her way in the first place'. The thought of her being put in harm's way felt like an insult to him. As he loves her, he vows to protect her and if he fails, she should at least live happily without him. He refuses to go through any pain with her because he doesn't want to even think that anything could harm her - not when he's around.

Personally, I think it is safe to argue that both guys have genuine feeling towards her and they are both sweethearts. However, while the first guy goes along with whatever she says and gave her the answer she thought she was hoping for, the second guy showed her a completely different perspective on how love works.

Which guy will you go for if you were the girl?

There are no right or wrong answers, merely just your preference.

For me, I think I would go for the second. That is because he wasn't afraid to show how angry and offended he felt by her questions. I like a guy who thinks for himself instead of going along with everything I say (even though that is also great once in a while haha). But that's only because I feel like I could learn something from this person.
