Chapter Forty Four

Blaise and Ivy stood a distance away from the village, it was silent, save for the calls of animals throughout the forest. Blaise listened in closely, remembering the sounds of wilderness; no telling when he'd hear them again.

Soon you'll be able to hear them everyday, more power equals more freedom, Blaise told himself.

Ivy sat, crouched down on the floor, binoculars obscuring her face. "Do you see him?" Blaise asked her. It was their fourth day watching his movements.

"Not yet... wait." Ivy paused. "I see him."

"How are we going to kidnap him?"

"We'll kidnap him at night, grab him when he's off guard and get the hell out of there."

"Sounds like a plan." Blaise grinned.

Ivy rolled her eyes. "You clearly have no experience, you should stay at camp tonight.."

"What do you expect? I haven't done this before, oh wise one. I should take the experience."

"The experience of kidnapping someone probably shouldn't be on your bucket list. But whatever.."

"...How long have you worked for Desmos?" Blaise started again.

"Longer than you."

"Care to specify?"

Ivy thought for a moment, "Almost five years, why?"

Blaise looked taken aback. "Five years?"

She grunted her affirmation.

"How long have you been doing your 'specialty'?"

"Almost three and a half years." Ivy paused. "Can you stop the interview and start helping now?" Blaise gave a brisk nod and squatted down beside Ivy.

-----

It was nighttime, the canopy seemed like a blanket of shadow, covering the sky. What did the night sky even look like nowadays? Blaise didn't know. When he had visited Luke, he didn't pay much attention to scenery, his sole focus was on the children; now he yearned to see the sky. But alas, his thoughts were driven away by Ivy.

"Let's go." Ivy motioned with her hand. They stood outside the cabin, waiting to start. Both of them were dressed in black suits, slick against their skin.

They stalked off into the woods.

They seemed to melt into the scenery, their suits changing color to match their surroundings, making them almost invisible to the naked eye.

"These are sick" Blaise mumbled to himself, running his hand along the fabric.

"Magic. Now pay attention before you run into a tree," Ivy hissed. They were at the base of the large tree that led the way up to the village.

"What now?" Blaise whispered.

"We wait. Damien has come down for a stroll every night at around this time, and it won't be any different this time."
