The Monster in the Sea

A wave crashes into the shore, its speckles of seafoam scattering elegantly against the sand,

Slinking away as a fox back to its sunken home, only for it to return once more.

And so the dance continues on and on, until it feels as if reversed,

Hiding behind the tide the true monster lurks, eyeing its prey with an unseen evil in its soul.

The stories had been told centuries ago, of the sailors lost at sea,

To walls of water tens of meters tall until hell's earthly gates closed in at last,

But that was so long ago, mere fairy tails woven like thread,

The truth beyond the water's edge remaining hidden behind a blissful lie.

The monster awakens from its slumber at last, pulling the sea with every breath,

Rising above that once-solid line between sky and water little by little

The tides sinking further back into the abyss like lure for its prey,

A lure, something beyond the water, glimmers of light on the trembling ocean's edge.

But the stories became legend, and legend became myth, until they were not to be remembered,

Until the day when the sea's hunger cried out in pain.

A horrid sound, the ocean made, as it lurched and raged,

And yet the men on that coast didn't dare to flee.

The walls of hell came crashing down as the time slipped away,

And still none of the people moved,

In a trance from the monster's enticing freedom,

From the ties of the earth to life in itself.

Perhaps the sea cried out from the pain it was in,

That glossy black infection slipping into its every reality,

Perhaps the sea cried out from the abuse it endured,

Islands of plastic like mountains against the endless water.

But when at last the sea struck back,

The people finally began to see the truth,

That the monster was never the waves of hell, the creatures, the salt, the cold,

And rather those who feared it instead.
