3. "Can we go to Harry's house?"
"Harry?" Liam half shouted because he couldn't believe that it is Harry. Harry smiled a bright smile and nodded while still struggling against Louis' protests.
"Oh, god. Harry!" Liam shouted and wished that he could hug his best friend right away but he's, in fact, struggling with an angry Louis.
Louis let out a screech and kicked the shin of Harry's right leg. The impact of the kick made Harry's grip on Louis' hand loosen a bi which gave Louis the chance to run away again. Liam quickly processed what happened and took off running after him. He quickly catch up to Louis before the brother can run any further away.
"Louis! Lou, look at me. Louis!" Liam tried to get Louis' attention. Louis screeched again so loudly and struggled against Liam's hold to hit his head. "You're alright!" Liam said and hugged Louis close, ignoring Louis' kicks and punches. At this point Liam has tears running down his cheeks. It is really terrifying for him to watch his brother having a meltdown in the middle of the street because there is nothing he could do to stop him from getting hurt. Louis kept on struggling against Liam's grip and sobbing for a while as Liam kept mumbling soothing words to the boy.
Finally, Louis stopped crying and laid his head on Liam's chest, hiccuping. Liam kissed his forehead and placed Louis' dummy between his lips. Harry watched all of this with a relieved smile.
"Where were you?!" Liam demanded as soon as he wiped away Louis' and his own tears and turned to Harry. Harry's eyes went wide.
"I-I..." Harry trailed off, making Liam shoot daggers at him.
"You better have a good explanation to why you disappeared after only 5 letters between us. Or else run, now." Liam said sending him a glare but laughing as Harry's eyes went even wider.
"Let's go home. Harold, you really got a lot to explain. I'm not over this shock yet." Liam said, sending a pointed look at Harry and picking Louis up. Louis laid his head on Liam's shoulder. Harry nodded with a smile.
"He's laying there like a kitten who did nothing." Harry said chuckling. Liam chuckled a bit and nodded.
"Lou? Do you remember Harry?" Liam asked. When they were all kids they used to go over to each other's houses and Louis would definitely tag along. Even after Harry moved houses, Louis kept saying that he wanna go over to Harry's house for almost 3 years. Therefore, there is no way in the hell Louis wouldn't remember Harry.
Louis' head snapped up at the mention of Harry's name. He hasn't recognized Harry in his hazy state of the meltdown and in his defense Harry has changed a lot over the years too.
"Gonna go to Harry's house?" Louis asked hopefully looking down at Liam making him chuckle.
"This is Harry, Lou." Liam said putting Louis down and gesturing towards Harry. Louis looked at Harry and tried to remember the boy he saw so many years ago. He panicked a little when their eyes met and looked down.
"Remember?" Liam asked and watched as Louis looked around already lost in another world. Harry smiled fondly as he watched how easily Louis got distracted.
"He's still the same. He hasn't changed even a bit except for his speech and looks." Harry said, making Liam nod.
"He's still the lovely lad he was all those years ago. Just some meltdowns here and there, but it's better than back in the past." Liam said smiling.
-
"Want LiLi to make dinner?" Liam asked once they are in their living room as he let go of his grip on Louis' wrist. He has been trying to escape Liam's grip all the way home but Liam didn't loosen his grip because he didn't want a repeat of the incident earlier.
"Where are you going?" Liam asked when Louis started walking to the direction of their front door. He followed after and saw Louis taking his shoes off. Liam mentally face palmed for forgetting about that.
"LiLi forgot. Didn't he?" Liam asked chuckling. He waited until Louis finished taking his shoes off and picked them up when Louis threw them.
"We don't throw things. Am I clear young man?" Liam said in an accusing tone but Louis has already flown back to the living room. Harry chuckled as he watched the scene.
Louis sneakily walked past Harry since he still hasn't figured out who he is. He was not so sure this is the Harry he used to play with a long, long time ago.
"Lou? Can't you remember me? I'm Harry." Harry said smiling big so his dimples are on display. Louis inspected Harry for a second and walked a little closer, humming.
"LiLi, can we go to Harry's house?" Liam wanted to slam his head against the nearest wall. 'Cause boy, is Louis starting to repeat the same thing again and again for another 3 years. But then he remembered that Harry is actually here.
"This is Harry, Lou. He came over here. So we can't go to his place right now." Liam said gesturing to Harry. Harry sat there in all his glory smiling like a frog. (I can never forget the fact that he's a frog.)
"No, Not Harry. Not Harry. Not Harry." Louis said repeatedly as he inspected Harry for the hundredth time.
"This is Harry, Lou. He's all grown up now. That's why you can recognize him." Liam said smiling. "Remember how we talked about how the way you look has changed while looking through our photo albums?" Liam asked and Louis just kept fidgeting with his hands.
"Harry has changed, just like you. This is the same Harry." Liam said patting Louis' back before the boy can get too worked up over this simple fact. Louis just stared at Harry while humming.
"I wanna color." He announced and bounced away to his room. Liam and Harry watched him with fond smiles of their own.
"Where the fuck were you?" Liam jumped on top of Harry and strangled him. Harry fought and finally managed to save his neck from Liam's hold. He coughed like crazy and laughed as he pounced on Liam. They wrestled around for a bit and Liam demanded the answers again.
'My mom...' was all Harry had to say and Liam knew what happened. He just went and hugged Harry close.
"My assumption is correct." Liam whispered as he hugged his best friend close. Harry breathed in the familiar scent of home that he felt around his best friend while Liam did the same. They stayed in the hug for a little longer than usual. When they pull back, both Liam and Harry had tears in their eyes.
"God, I missed you, Li. I fucking missed you." Harry said and hugged his best friend again.
"Same, Haz, same. I was basically dying over here for past 8 years when I never got a respond to the last few letters I sent you." Liam said squeezing Harry in his hold.
"I'm sorry, Li." Harry mumbled but Liam quickly shook his head and pulled out of the hug.
"It's not your fault, so don't ever apologize again." Liam said, looking directly into Harry's eyes. Harry nodded, smiling a bit. They both wiped their tears away and decided to start on the dinner. They both walked into the kitchen and decided to eat just Louis' usual.
"Chocolate." Louis mumbled as he came into the kitchen.
"Take some from the fridge. Not too much, though." Liam said with a pointed look at Louis.
"Where is Jay, Li? Out?" Harry asked and paused when he saw Liam freeze in his place.
"What happened?!" Harry asked, his eyes widening.
"Want mommy. I want mommy. LiLi, I want mommy." Louis said repeatedly looking at Liam. 'No, god, no. Don't let this happen again. Please, god. No.' Liam prayed.
"I-I'm sorry, Lou. You know s-she went on a long trip to the heaven. Remember? I told you how f-far away it is." Liam said swallowing the lump in his throat. Liam heard Harry gasp but he ignored it in flavor of making his big brother distracted. Louis shook his head and banged his hand against the closed fridge door.
"I want mommy!" He demanded.
"We can talk to her before you go to bed, but remember, she's playing the silent game there. She can't talk with you but she's listening to you." Liam said the same lie he repeated over years. He wanted to scream and cry. This was too much.
He looked up to see Harry sitting on one of the bar stools in the kitchen and with his head buried deep in his palms and his shoulders are moving with silent cries. He loved Jay more than he loved his own mother.
"Okay. The silent game. Sh..." Louis said and giggled as he ran back to his room.
That's when Liam let the tears roll down his face.
"W-what happened?" Harry asked looking at Liam with tear filled eyes.
'Leukemia.' was all Liam could mumble.
"I'm so sorry. God, I'm so sorry I wasn't there with you through your hard times. I'm sorry." Harry jumped up and hugged his best friend. He knew that there would be some changes when he comes back but he never imagined Jay to be out of the picture. Jay was there in every thought he had about the Tomlinson family, along the way to Donny.
"Don't apologize, Haz. It wasn't your fault." Liam mumbled and leaned closer to Harry's hug finding some comfort that he hasn't got in a long time.
Both Harry and Liam wiped the tears on their cheeks and made a silent agreement to forget about what happened. Harry made a mental note to never mention Jay around Louis again.
-
Liam had another question swirling around his head but he didn't want to even think about what happened about an hour ago.
"Where did you find Louis?" He asked anyway.
"He was about to enter the park and I was on my way here. I recognized him the moment I saw him and he was crying. I looked around to see if I can see you but I couldn't. So I assumed that he has run away again. I quickly jumped and tried to get him to talk but he kept on mumbling that he wanna go, under his breath and trying to walk past me. I took a hold of his hands when he was about to push me and I dragged him here since he was fighting too much for me to pick him up. I met you halfway through. So... yeah." Harry finished his talk and saw how sad and terrified Liam looked.
"The last day he ran away was the day you left town. I didn't expect this at all. He just asked for chocolate and I said no. Then he started having a meltdown, so I turned around to grab some chocolate and give it to him. I heard him walk out of the kitchen but I didn't think he would run away." Liam finished with a long sigh.
"I think you better put that alarm system on again, Li." Harry said remembering about the alarm that beeped whenever someone opened the door.
"Good idea! I still have it. I will set it up after dinner. Where is he now though?" Liam asked and then panicked a little. He ran to Louis' room and saw the boy playing a game on his laptop. Liam let out a sigh of relief that he didn't know he was holding in.
"Hi, Lou." Liam said and watched as Louis get out of his computer chair leaving the game right where he was playing without even pausing it.
"LiLi!" Louis cheered as he jumped on top of Liam, making him chuckle.
"Can we go to Harry's house?" Louis asked making Liam sigh.
"Yes, we can, but not today, buddy. Maybe tomorrow. I would have to ask Harry." Liam said ruffling Louis' hair.
"I want to go today!" Liam said stomping his feet.
"Harry is here, love. Why don't you go and ask him? We can't go over if he is already here." Liam said trying to explain the logic to Louis.
"Harry is here?" Louis asked jumping up and down. Liam wanted to bang his head against a brick wall. How the heck do you explain that Harry has in fact grown up? (Neither do I believe this, Lou, neither do I. xD)
Louis ran out of his room calling out Harry's name.
"Yes, Lou?" Harry walked out of the kitchen, making Louis stopped dead in his track and ran back to where Liam is. He hid behind Liam and peeked at Harry. Liam chuckled at Harry's clueless face.
"He's still looking out for 12 years old you." Liam said smiling fondly at Louis.
"Wanna go to Harry's house." Louis repeated the same line underneath his breath.
"This is Harry, Lou." Liam tried again.
"Lou, remember when I used to read you my story books when you were over mine? Remember how we used to play in the backyard while plucking pretty flowers?" Harry asked stepping closer.
"Fried rice." He blurted out making Harry and Liam chuckle.
"Yeah, we used to order Chinese too." Harry chuckled. Louis giggled and ran into the living room.
"God." Liam mumbled.
"I think he got that I'm Harry but he's still too shy to have a conversation with me." Harry said smiling. Liam nodded.
"He's not good with new people. You're a new person to him since your looks have changed over the years." Liam said smiling too.
-
"Louis, dinner is ready. Come here." Liam called out and Louis came bouncing into the kitchen. He stopped and sat on his usual seat.
"Can we go to Harry's house tomorrow?" Louis asked again.
"Yes, you can come over to my house. I still haven't unpacked anything though." Harry said smiling.
"You came to stay here?" Liam asked excitedly. Harry nodded smiling wide.
"I moved my job here. Well, I came here on my own will since I own my dad's company now. Mom wasn't happy about it but you know." Harry mumbled the last part.
"Oi! A businessman? Huh?" Liam said trying to tease Harry. Liam knew that Harry would have his dad's company handed over when he gets old enough. The boy was a good leader since they were kids which made him the best to handle a business.
"Can we go to Harry's house?" Louis repeated again. Harry let out a not-so-amused chuckle knowing how Louis is.
"Yes, we can." Liam said, smiling when Louis cheered.
