Milkshakes and Mysterious Men
Michelle's P.O.V
Dear god, somebody help me. That guy just retched all over the floor, great.
Pushing through the crowd of drunken college kids and students who obviously snorted illegal substances behind the building, I made my way to the backyard patio. Opening the sliding doors, I took a deep breath of fresh air, or at least what I could get of it. Throwing a glance to the dudes who were smoking cigarettes, I wrinkled my nose in disgust. Lung cancer officially has a new victim.
Suddenly, I heard weird and pretty disturbing sounds coming from the side of the house. Creeping to the side, I caught a glimpse of two people pretty much making babies near the garbage bins. Almost throwing up, I turned around quickly, but not before I could make out the guy's face. Swiveling around again, I saw that yes, my boyfriend of three years was cheating on me with a girl who's basically just in her undergarments. I felt my heartbeat stop and my stomach drop as my breath froze in my throat.
Turning away with tears burning my eyes, I rushed inside. Pushing past people once more, I spotted my friends, but they looked too drunk to understand my sob story through my cries. With the door in plain sight, I hurriedly ran to it and threw it open as if I was drunk and about to puke myself. By that point, I was almost ready to anyway.
I ran across the lawn with two-inch heels and tears streaming down my face, which is no easy feat. After sobbing for a lifetime and a half, I wiped my eyes and looked at the unfamiliar surroundings.
Brick buildings, dead plants, and tacky neon lights. Looking around for a place that didn't seem quite so sketchy, I only saw liquor stores, pawn shops, and dimly lit bars.
"Now, what's a pretty girl like yourself doing here?" a scratchy, deep voice whispered from right behind me.
Letting out a small and painful little screech, I slowly turned around. My wide eyes scrambled to find the man but all the street lamps only had barely flickering light bulbs. Squinting, I made out the outline of a burly figure. Oh no, no no no no no, NO WAY JOSE!!! I know your name is probably not Jose, but no way was this happening. I already lost my boyfriend and I was not about to lose something else tonight.
He stepped into the light of a nearby bar and smiled like a cat might at a mouse. A perfect smile, I must admit, to bad he was probably going to kill me.
"You need some help getting home girly, because you can hop on my ride." He not-so-subtly winked at me and I literally gagged at the dirty pick-up line and the cringey movement he shot at me.
"No thanks," I managed to muster while slowly backing up. Great Michelle, this is what you get for growing up going on shopping sprees instead of to self-defense classes.
"Well, why don't we go home, maybe my house? It's closer."
Oh my holy lords, the only "closer" I'll ever be involved in is the song, that I won't ever be listening to again after this. Baby pull me closer... STOP IT MICHELLE!!!
"N-no thank you." I slowly scanned the scenery to find an escape route. Maybe if I ran in the direction of a garden he'd stop to smell the roses. Or maybe a handsome prince will come and save me, like in the movies.
Haha, you're funny Michelle, you think you're living in a movie. Well, your boyfriend cheated on you, you're looking like trash, and someone is now invading your personal bubble to get his dirty paws on you. Movie rated R kids.
"Well, you're just the prettiest and most innocent thing, I can't have you wandering around this part of town all night, I'll regret it all of my life." He touched my straight, black hair and I looked into his hazel eyes. I didn't know what was more disgusting though, the words coming out of his mouth or his filthy, reeking breath. Who eats onions at a bar?
He put his hand on my waist and I stepped on his foot, high heel first. This will forever be the only time these feet torture devices *cough* sorry, high heels would come in handy. I watched for a second as he yelled and cursed in pain and I ran. Out of the neighborhood, into the busy streets, past the college campus because I was too scared to see Burke, now my ex, again.
Finally slowing down after I reached the Historic District, I gasped for fresh air, which was thankfully not tinted with the stench cigarettes this time. I looked up from my awkward position and saw multiple people giving me questioning stares. Great, the cherry on the cake. I guess I should workout more, as if that would ever happen.
Looking into a store window, I flattened my hair and straightened my skirt. I wasn't wearing that much makeup so it wasn't ruined too much, I wanted to go for a natural look tonight. Just kidding, I had to cram for four tests, two pop quizzes, and midterms. Also, complete three essays, five worksheets, read three chapters and ANALYZE THEM, and commit suicide afterwards. College, it'll give you a better future, unless you kill yourself before you can get one.
Walking around, I replayed the kiss over and over in my head. Was the rewind button on crack because I couldn't stop seeing the montage of gag-worthy kissing in my head. Seriously, I think they were slurping on each other's saliva like dogs. But why couldn't I be the girl that did that with him! We dated for three years, THREE YEARS. How long has he been cheating on me?
How should I feel right now? Heartbroken, angry, betrayed? Why couldn't life be easier? I looked up, a bright green sign greeted me. Mom and Pop's Milkshake Shoppe.
I looked inside through the huge glass windows. It looked somewhat old-fashioned with black and white tile and red leather booth seats. There was an old-fashioned counter with people chatting away and drinking milkshakes through red and white striped straws. It kind of reminded me of a bar except people were dancing to old songs and they were high on sugar rather than white mystery powder.
Shrugging, I went in. I wasn't technically 21 yet, why not drown my feelings legally in sweet creamy beverages?
The door jingled but the party didn't stop. I looked around and saw people with their friends, old couples, and a few freshmen in college. Uninterested in associating with anyone or sitting in a booth like the loner I am, I found a bar stool that was within a two-seat radius from any other living thing.
Looking up at the drink selection on the menu, I was debating over plain vanilla because classics always seem to cheer me up or chocolate because I always see sad girls in movies stuffing themselves senseless with it.
After picking chocolate, a perky girl dressed in one of those uniforms you see in the black and white films came over.
"Hello, anything you'd like today?" She sounded so cheerful. Why can't my life be half as cheerful as her voice?
"One chocolate milkshake," I ordered. I sounded so depressed next to her. What pills does she take in the morning because the only one I take is aspirin.
"If you pay two extra dollars, you'll get refills for the rest of the night, would you like that?"
Sighing, chocolate more like carbolate. Whatever, I need a lot of milkshake to drown out the moans from my EX and his new girlfriend. "Sure." No regrets tonight Michelle. Except attending that party, wandering into the most dangerous part of the city, letting myself be sexually harassed by that man, and wearing heels in the first place.
Looking over to my left, there was a group of friends who were waiting for their order. Gosh, they look better than me and I got dressed up and everything, they came here in sweatpants. I wish I could be young again, age one was so much better than this.
Glancing over to my right, I saw one lone boy. Same, honestly. His black-almost-brown hair covered his eyes because he was looking down, but he wasn't looking at me, so why not? I don't have a boyfriend anymore anyways. Besides, Burke got over me so quickly, we were still in the relationship.
He had long legs and toned arms. His lips were full and his nose curved a little. His jawline though, literal perfection.
"Here you go," a perky voice interrupted my thoughts. She slid the glass full of milkshake my direction and went away to attend to another group of friends.
The chocolate milkshake was a light shade of brown, balancing a mountain of whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry topped it all off. Taking the straw, I took a sip and almost sighed out loud, but I contained my awkwardness. It was like I was drinking a cloud. Free refills of heaven in a cup as well? Go me!
Loud slurping sounds came out of nowhere all of a sudden. I looked over to the right and saw that the boy next to me was finishing his milkshake. He pushed the glass towards the kitchen area and went back to his phone.
I watched as a Polly Pocket look-a-like came over and grabbed the milkshake glass. She came back moments later with another one. The glass was filled to the brim with a cream-colored vanilla milkshake. He didn't even acknowledge her as she slid the milkshake to him.
Going back to my own milkshake, I felt someone's eyes on me. Turning around slowly, I saw the guy staring at me with his beautiful amber eyes.
