Chapter Twenty Three: Practically Perfect

During the last half of the show I went up to Lin's dressing room and sorted his fan mail. I put boxes in one pile, letters in another, and sort by date making the oldest mail the first on the pile. It really wasn't easy. There was a ton of it.

"Hello, hello, hello," I tired Lin walked. He looked over at my work in the corner, "Holy shit, Lark. How long have you been working on that?"

I looked at the time on my phone, "I left after What'd I Miss. The first act was amazing by the way."

Lin whistled, "You didn't have to do that Lark, but thank you."

I stood up and dusted off my pants, "You're welcome."

"Alright, I'm going to change and then we can bounce," Lin said taking off his coat. I took that as my cue to leave and left the dressing room. I couldn't help but think over the fact why I hadn't watched the second act. Honestly, I just didn't want to see Lin "die". I knew it was theatrical, but I just couldn't do it.

I headed up the stairs to the Schuyler sister's dressing room. I knocked on the door and was greeted by Jasmine Cephas Jones in a robe.

"Hi, come on in," Jasmine greeted. She opened the door and let me in. Pippa was laying down on the couch on her phone. Renee was sitting at her vanity in a robe and getting rid of her stage makeup.

"Hey girl," Renee greeted.

"Hi."

"Where'd you disappear to?" Jazzy asked.

"Lin's dressing room," I answered and sat at Phillipa's vanity.

"Oh," Jazzy pouted, "How come?"

"Honestly?" I started nervously, "I didn't want to see Lin die."

Phillipa awed. Renee smiled, "That's so cute!"

I blushed at their remarks. Why did everyone think that? I'm fifteen- definitely not cute.

"Twitter has been flipping out since since you posted that video on Instagram," Phillipa directed towards Jasmine. I kinda noticed that.

"Really? What are they saying?" Renee asked while brushing through her hair.

"Stuff like: How can I be the next #SmallChildMiranda," Pippa read off. Yup, I saw that one too.

"#SmallChildMiranda? Oh my god, sorry Lark, but that's going be the fans nickname for you," Jazzy said laughing.

"It's alright. Small Child Miranda and Old Man Miranda sound good together," I shrugged. Suddenly, my phone rang and I look at the caller id and laughed, "Speak of the devil.."

"Hey, Lark, I'm in my dressing room. Let's go," Lin dragged out the "go" to allude to Daveed's part in Yorktown.

"Okay, be there in a bit," I ended the call and looked up at the girls, "I gotta go, it was nice talking to you guys."

"Oh same back to you, Sweetie," Renee replied.

I decided to leave before I made this awkward (thats my superpower). I said goodbye and left the dressing room to go to Lin's. I finally got there, and found Lin closing his back pack.

"You really want to leave, don't you." I commented.

Lin swung the bag onto his back and yawned, "I have a two show day tomorrow so I want to get as much sleep as possible."

"Want me to carry your bag while you're busy signing things?" I asked as we exited the room and heading to the stage door.

"No Alondra, you're my kid not my intern," Lin said and he pushed the door open. Noise erupted from everywhere. I've never stagedoored as a fan, but it's scary on the receiving end. Lin didn't even blink at the screaming. The normalcy he had for all this was just incredible.

"Lin! Whats #SmallChildMiranda about?" asked a young fan, about twelve years old. Lin said nothing and reached out for another Playbill. I leaned against the brick wall and pulled out my phone. Midnight was approaching and I couldn't believe I'll officially be Lin and Vanessa's foster kid tomorrow morning, but it'd also be my third day without my mom. In the span of things, I haven't had my mom for three years, the one I grew up knowing and loving. The thoughts started to get too depressing for me, so I started thinking about what'd I do tomorrow. I'd get up with Lin and V and we'd get the papers signed. Vanessa would go to work, Lin would probably go back to sleep, and I would go out to my apartment. I was pulled out of my thoughts by Lin grabbing my hand and leading us away from the fans.

"Did you have fun?" I asked getting in the car.

"The fans are amazing, I'm just really tired," Lin said wiping at his eyes. "Okay, let's go home and get some sleep."

I woke up to a big boom and confetti landing on my face. I sat up quickly, "What the hell?"

Lin and Vanessa were laughing at my confusion. "Sorry Alondra," Lin cut off for another bit of laughing, "We got the papers signed, your officially being fostered my Lin-Manuel Miranda and his beautiful wife Vanessa Nadal."

I smiled but had to ask, "Why did you let me sleep in?"

Lin sat on my bed, "You're a teenager, it's your job to sleep in."

Suddenly, Sebastian started crying from his room.

"And, as parents, it's our job not too," Vanessa kissed Lin's cheek, "Good luck with that, I gotta go to work."

Lin waited until Vanessa left before he turned to me, "I'll make breakfast if you deal with Homeboy."

"Deal."

Lin left to make breakfast and I went to Sebastian's room. I pushed open the door to see Sebastian crying in his crib. I walked over to the one and a half year old.

"Hey Sebs, what's wrong?" I asked. He just cried so I picked him up and held him to my chest. "It's all chill man, it's okay. Let's get some agua, okay?"

Sebastian calmed down slightly. He still sniffled and rested his head on my shoulder. He's such a sweetheart. I walked into the kitchen to see Lin making oatmeal. I set Sebastian down in his chair and went into the kitchen to get him a small glass of water.

"You calmed him down fast," Lin commented.

I held up the glass of water, "Bartering tool." I gave the kid the water and he immediately took a drink.

"Hey Lark, I wanna go with you to get your flight ticket, let's get it on my lunch break," Lin told me from the kitchen. I sat down in my chair.

"Do you have enough time to do that?"

"Oh yeah," Lin brought out the bowls, "hour and a half lunch break."

I nodded, "Okay, what time should I go to the Rodgers?"

"We go in at eleven and have rehersal, so come a bit before twelve thirty," Lin answered and helped Sebastian eat. I took a bite of my own oatmeal, already thinking about what I wanted at my apartment.

I got to my apartment at eleven O' three and looked around. I obviously would leave the furniture as I had no need for it. I would probably only take decorations from my room and any special knick knacks. I polled out my mom's suitcase from her closet and rolled it into my room.

I placed in artwork, awards, and the glow in the dark stars from over my bed. I folded up a couple special blankets to me and placed in my small collection of stuffed animals. I pulled out my box of pictures that hadn't been scrapbooked from underneath my bed and place that over by the suitcase. I rolled up the rest of my wardrobe and placed it into the luggage. I also placed some hanger in a cardboard box from the recycling. That was all I wanted from my bedroom, so I went into the bathroom and grabbed all my toiletries to place them in the front pocket of my bag. I went into the kitchen and took out the food with the trash for Mr. Jerry.

I then went into Mom's room to get whatever I wanted from there. Mom had minimal jewelry, but I placed the box into my bag anyways, besides Lizbeth and Madeline might want something. I lugged out a heavy, small safe that she kept under her bed. This is where she kept important papers, like our birth certificates. Problem was, I didn't know where the key was. So I left it alone on Mom's bed and went through her closet. Nothing was in my size so I quickly shut the door and went to the Ipad resting on her bedside table. When I turned it on and entered the passcode, it was on video. All of them appeared to be mine, but I didn't recognize one of them. I clicked on it and hit play.

The first thing I saw was my mother's face. She was crying. I stopped the recording and looked at the date this was taken. May 23rd, that was the day she.. I ignored that and pressed play,

"Hey Baby,"
