Chapter Ten: Time To Play

I guess there are always people around the Richard Rogers theater. There was three girls that had been waiting there and had flipped when Lin showed up to the stage door. He was very nice and did pictures and autographs with a grin that made you want to smile. I think one of them recognized me, but said nothing. Eventually, Lin was was able to enter with me right behind him. We dropped off our bags in his and Rory's dressing room and then Lin went to go see who was at the theater before he made the 'call'. That's what they called getting the actors and techies together for the show, but to me it seemed a bit like the Avengers. I settled into Lin's chair and shuffled my Broadway playlist on Spotify. Mama Who Bore Me from Spring Awakening began playing and I closed my eyes while listening to the violins eloquence.

"Hey Lin, I'm-" Chris Jackson stopped in the doorway's entrance and stared at me. "Who are you and what have you done with Lin?"

"Uh," I really couldn't think of how to answer this. Hi, I'm a kid Lin took in? That sounded legitimate. Not.

"Chris," Lin's voice came from down the hall. He came into the room and gestured to me, "this is Lark, V and I took her in for a little bit."

Chris looked from Lin to me and then back to Lin, "Oh, okay? Sorry about the interrogation earlier, Lark. I'm Chris Jackson, I play George Washington."

"It's all cool, Mr. President," I joked. He nodded, said bye, and walked away. I didn't blame him, it was a lame joke.

"You really shouldn't joke, it's too painful to watch," Lin teased.

My cheeks were red from embarrassment, "Shut up."

"'Mr. President', really?" Lin continued.

"I'm bad at jokes. Sarcastic one liners are my thing. And really bad Broadway puns. I annoyed the crap out of my other crew chief for tech. Like she hates you,"I said before breaking off laughing.

Lin faked hurt with a sad expression and a hand over his heart, "Why have you made this girl hate me?"

"I played too much Hamilton and voiced too many history facts," I answered smiling.

Lin, still playing sad, said, "And she's in...theatre?"

I nodded, "Yeah, I was a techie for costumes at school."

Lin dropped the act and grew excited, " I should hook you up with Paul Tazewell, he designed the costumes for Hamilton and like a billion other shows. Sometimes he shows up on performance nights."

I nodded and smiled, "That's really chill, Lin. And I just realized that sounded like chillin', but I did not say that."

Lin laughed at my awkwardness and lack of the ability to shut up. Noise echoed down the hall. And I looked inquisitively at Lin.

"That would be the cast and crew," Lin answered. I nodded and didn't voice the nerves. I failed with Chris, but I already knew Pippa, Renee, and Daveed from last time Lin dragged me here. I shut off my music and slid my phone into my pocket. I followed behind Lin like the shy, small child I was.

We met the cast in the hall, well most of the actors like Leslie had yet to arrive, but a decent amount of swings and main cast actors had arrived, significantly Oak, Daveed, Anthony, and Jasmine. They called out to Lin and he smiled and called back.

"Who's the kid?" Anthony asked. I smiled shyly and waved from behind Lin. Lin directed me forward.

"This is Lark, she's staying at my house for a while."

Most of them waved and said hello.

"Small child Miranda!" Called out Oak who ran forward and picked me up off the floor in a hug. Even though I was surprised I hugged back. It was one of the best hugs I've ever had. Oak put me down and we all laughed, including me.

Some techies filtered through to get things prepped and I stayed with some actors on the staircase. It was pretty knew as I didn't really talk to many actors at school, unless we were in choir or discussing advanced courses together.

"So Lark, you a fan of Broadway?" Asked Jasmine.

"Absolutely, I was obsessed with Annie in fifth grade when we did a small production of it for Choir and then it just kinda grew. We did a production of Mary Poppins for school in March and that's all the musicals I've worked on."

"Any parts?" Anthony asked.

"Orphan for Annie and I did costumes for Mary Poppins, roughly a ninety costumes total."

The actors nodded, I wasn't sure they were impressed, but whatever.

"What school's have you gone to?" Oak asked.

"Um. I moved here when I was eleven, almost twelve, but I went to KIPP Infinity Charter School for a semester before transferring to Hunter College High School."

Oak whooped, "We got a brainiac here."

I blushed and fiddled with my fingers, "Not really, its a miracle I got in. There's so many smart people there."

Jasmine's phone beeped and she excused herself to go get in costume. After she left, Leslie showed up late, as usual. He rushed through with a simple 'hi' and didn't even notice me. I didn't mind as I was used to this at school. Anthony and Oak both stood up.

"Leslie's here, so that's are cue to get miked," explained Oak. I nodded and gave him a thumbs up, he returned it and the two went off to there dressing room. I stood up, wiped off my shorts and went back to Lin's dressing room.

The door was shut, so I knocked twice. Rory answered, fully costumed. I had met him briefly on the staircase where Oak had called me the 'Temporary Miranda' and that I was 'a small child'. Rory had laughed, joked, and then went up the staircase to finish the take out he had brought and then get in costume.

"Hey Lark, Lin's in here." Rory opened the door all the way to let me through. I entered and saw Lin with all but the Hamilton coat. I didn't blame him, it was Summer and pretty hot (Nebraska was a bit hotter, but I digress). Lin had his phone in his hand and must've just gotten done with a video.

"Sup, Lark." Lin said as the thirty minutes until show was announced.

"Hey," I said while slumping onto the couch. My introvertedness had had enough with people right now, even though these were some of my favorite Broadway stars.

"Tired?" Lin asked while turning up the music on his computer. I couldn't tell who the artist was as I didn't listen to rap. I knew the people of Hamilton, In The Heights, and a couple songs like "Whose Gonna Run This Town".

"I don't know, introvertedness is confusing, man," I said lying down.

"Best friends with Oak?"

"I'm apparently a tiny human that is too precious for this world," I say sarcastically.

Lin chuckled, "Well, he took to you fast. What you going to do during show?"

I shrugged,"Bother people maybe. Or stay in here. It depends on how courageous I feel."

"Gryffindor?"

"Ravenclaw, caw caw motherfrikker."

Lin laughed before making a snake sound. I laughed, his dressing room walls matched perfectly.

"I had a Slytherin friend and whenever she wore her Hogwarts shirt I say "Slytherin ssss ssss" and do little snake bites with my hands. She finds it adorable, I bounce, it's all chill," I babble tiredly.

Lin laughed as the song changed. I actually knew this one by the first note. I grew up on this shit and instantly I was awake.

"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?" I sang along. Lin looked over at me and smiled.

"This is the stuff I grew up on, Lin. This is my childhood."

Lin and I stayed quiet until the tempo changed and we were jamming.

"I see a little silhouetto of a man!" We sang loudly. We jammed out until the ten minute mark was called as the song ended. During the song I had got to my feet so I sunk back down to the couch, out of breath. Lin got on his Hamilton coat and fixed his hair.

"Alright, I'm going to check on the other actors," Lin said.

"Leslie?"

"Leslie."

I laughed and snuggled into the couch, "Alright, I'm chill, this couch is incredibly nice."

"Alright, bye Lark."

"Bye Lin."

Kinda a filler chapter, but I like. Its also a lot longer than I thought it was going to be. That's alright as I've been slaving away for hours. I'm trying to correct my sleeping schedule so I have to be up for another twelve hours so I can get used to getting up at five since school starts in like three weeks.

Huge, tremendous thank you to those who prayed to my family. My great grandmother isn't in the hospital right now if my information from my crazy grandma is correct. I should be able to write faster as two of my brother are gone for two weeks. Sorry this is so long. Thanks for reading!

Ever yours, hlwing
