Chapter Nineteen: It All Comes Back

The Little Mermaid was over and Lin switched on one of my favorites, Mulan. Sebastian grabbed my attention as he padded away from his toys and went down the hall.

"Lin, the twitter has sucked you in, hasn't it?" Vanessa asked jokingly.

"I'm sucked into the twitter, help," Lin joked, not looking up from his phone. Vanessa laughed and went back to watching the movie. I pulled out my own phone as I haven't been on in awhile.

@Lin_Manuel: Mis hijos

With it was a picture of me, Sebastian, and Tobi all asleep from earlier today. The fans were freaking out.

@Love_Janthony: @Lin_Manuel Can I be your kid, too!?

@Precious_Cinnamon: @Lin_Manuel WAIT! ARE YOU ADOPTING LARK!!! #CHILD MIRANDA

"Lin..what's this?" I asked slowly. Did he see me as his kid? Was he adopting me? Lin looked over at my screen.

"I thought it was adorable and you are like my kid," Lin explained. He wrapped his arm around me and held me close. He thought of me as his kid! My heart soared at the thought, but wait. Why would anyone want me as their kid? Mom didn't, but she wrote back "I love you, too" That has to mean something, right? She loved me, but she left me forever. Just like Dad, just like everyone else I love. Everyone either dies or stays away.

"Lark has the twitter too?" Vanessa asked.

"Yup, the fandom is real," I answer, scrolling through my feed. I liked a couple pictures of food.

"What do you have Sebastian," Vanessa asked. I looked at Sebastian, he just had my picture album. I went back to my phone, wait.

"That's my photo album," I say slowly. Lin and Vanessa looked at me for a moment. Vanessa took the book from Sebastian.

"Sorry Bud, that's not yours, it's Lark's," Vanessa said, handing me my book. Sebastian padded over to me.

"Libro,"Sebastian said simply while pointing at the album.

"Yeah," I reply, "book."

"He wants you to show him it," Vanessa clarified. I'm bad with kids, can't you tell?

"Oh, okay," I said simply. I moved my blanket away and held out my hands, "Come on Seb, let's look at the libro together."

Sebastian smiled and let out a laugh. I helped him up onto my lap and flipped over the cover. Showcased was my older siblings before I was born.

"People,"Sebastian said.

"Yeah, those my siblings," I clarify. I point to a ten year old Aiden, "That's my brother Aiden."

Then I pointed to my second oldest sibling who was eight years old at the time, "That's Adam."

Sebastian pointed to my eldest sister, "Lark."

I smiled at his assumption, "No, that's Madeline. She looks like me, but with blue eyes instead of green. And that," I pointed to the youngest child in the picture, "Is Lizbeth."

"So these are all of your older siblings?" Lin asked. He looked down at the pictures.

"Yeah, I won't be born for another five years," I say. I looked back at the t.v. Mulan was currently meeting Mushu.

"Do you have any younger siblings?" Vanessa asked. I looked down at the album.

"Yeah, they're- they're not around anymore," I answer. The story seemed complicated, so I wasn't going to go in depth.

Sebastian flipped the page, and the he flipped it again as it was boring school pictures of Aaron, Adam, and Madeline. There was a big gap between the pictures as the next ones featured me and my brothers.

"Bebé," Sebastian said excitedly, "Bebé!"

I smiled.

"Who's the other babies, if these are of you." Lin asked. Yay, this question.

"Um, I was born a quadruplet, four babies born at the same time," I answer.

Vanessa grimaced at the thought, "That must of been hell for your mother, she was a fighter."

"Yeah," I said quietly, "she was. She had a lot of problems resulting from our birth."

Sebastian flipped the page and was bored about the fact that it was more of us in the hospital, all hooked up to wires and in incubators. We had been in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Sebastian flipped past news clippings and pictures of my childhood. Eventually, he flipped past all of them without really looking.

"Done," Sebastian said simply, He slid off my lap and went to go play with his toys. He was cute. I fixed my blanket and curled up again. Lin and Vanessa didn't say anything and we watched the rest of Mulan in peace.

It was about ten o'clock when the credits rolled for Mulan came on. I always loved that movie, it was funny, heartfelt, and showed little girls they don't need a man to kick butt and that they can do it themselves.

"What's next?" I asked Lin. Lin shrugged and looked over at V. Vanessa yawned.

"I'm going to put Sebastian to bed," Vanessa said and got to her feet.

Lin got off the couch. "Nope, I'm doing it. I'm lucky if I tuck him in once a week," he picked up a tired Sebastian and took him down the hall. Vanessa smiled and went to see what Disney movies there were.

"There's Tangled, Frozen, The Jungle Book. Hm...what about..The Aristocats? I haven't seen that one," Vanessa said. I gaped at her.

"You've never seen The Aristocats! We need to watch it now," I took the remote away and clicked it on.

Vanessa laughed, "You're a fan?"

I dramatically placed a hand to my chest, "It is only the best Disney movie of all time."

Vanessa smiled, "I've got a thirty six year old child for a husband that would beg a differ."

"I'm up for a debate," I joked. Vanessa reached for my hand and held it, my smile disappeared.

"Lark, we we're wondering," Vanessa started.

"Yes?"

"Who are you going to live with?" Vanessa asked.

"What do you mean?" I asked

"We called Grace earlier and she wanted you to make a list of what family members you would like to live with," Vanessa answered. So they want to get rid of me? Right after Lin called me his kid? What did I do?

"I- I don't know," I looked away from Vanessa and watched the kittens play around instead. Marie saying my favorite Disney quote didn't even make me crack a smile.

"Hey Lark," Vanessa said. I looked over at her, "We love you here, you know. You're good with Sebastian and Lin wants to protect you."

I said nothing.

"What's your plan for all this? Do you have anyone in mind to stay with?" Vanessa pressed.

"I don't know. The funeral is going to be back in Nebraska, that's for sure, but I don't have anyone in mind to stay with. My grandparents are either hate me or crazy. My older siblings are in various states of jail or have their own families. I have two uncles, but one has stage four cancer and the other has epilepsy."

"You're grandparents hate you?" Vanessa asked, not convinced.

"My grandmother has repeatedly called me a murderer. She thinks I'm the reason everyone dies, and now has even more reason to. God, I'm gonna love going back," I huff and looked around the room. Everything was so- so- so stupid.

"Lark," Vanessa called. I didn't look at her. "Lark. Lark, look at me."

I did as I was told. I was on the breaking point. I bit my lip and frantically worked to keep my emotions under lock. I can't cry, I can't cry..

"Lark, do you blame yourself for your mom's death?"

I didn't answer verbally, but my reaction was enough to answer. Vanessa wrapped me into a hug and rubbed the back of my head. Mom used to rub my back instead...For the first time, I cried over my mother's death.

"Hey, is this Aristocats?" Lin asked. I drew out of Vanessa's embrace. Lin looked at my tearstained face and jumped onto the couch, from the back may I add. He wrapped me up to his chest.

"What's wrong, mi alondra?" He asked, but quickly added, "Never mind, that's a stupid question."

I cracked a smile into the fabric, which was wet from tears. I wasn't sure where I was going to end up, but I liked where I was right now.

I feel like all my updates recently are late, but they're not. Anyways, this was a mostly filler chapter, but we learned more about Lark's background and grew her and Vanessa's relationship. I felt like it was lacking. Ask questions if you have any.

Should I do something special for the twentieth chapter?

Thanks for reading!

Ever yours, hlwing
