Part 6 Prompt: Worry

Angie banged on the desk to get the squad's attention. "Alright, listen up."

She asked Andy what he had found about the vic, Peter Berwick.

Damien's picture popped up on the big screen at the front of the room. It was a traditional full-face and profile mugshot. "Peter Berwick, age 38. Arrested in Cleveland for Pimping in 2019. The case never went to trial. Suspected trafficker in Kansas City, St Louis, and Indianapolis. Checked into the Ellis Hotel six days ago. Caught on surveillance video entering this shop on Lawton three days ago. GBI has identified this as a suspected clearinghouse for human trafficking operations." Andy paused and checked his notes.

Joey Miller added, "SVU had the handoff from GBI but had not picked him up on their surveillance yet. Two of their people went over to the Ellis but came up empty. His prints are not in the interagency database for sex traffickers"

Andy added, "Our IAFIS request was put on referral. I have asked the FBI why, but they have been slow to respond. I should hear something this morning."

IAFIS is a national automated fingerprint identification and criminal history system maintained by the FBI. Fingerprints are submitted to the FBI by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and businesses that have contracts with the government. These agencies acquire the fingerprints through criminal arrests or from non-criminal sources, such as employment background checks. The FBI then catalogs the fingerprints along with any criminal history linked with the subject. The response time for an IAFIS request is usually under 30 minutes but delays can happen if the search result has been flagged as a person of interest to national law enforcement.

Damien and Mick were at the back of the room. "That's not me," Damien was agitated. "There's no way I would be involved in sex trafficking." He worried, "If they focus on that, they are not going to find the real killer."

"It's still early in the case," Mick told him. "Let Angie do her job."

Almost as though she heard that, Angies said, "We need to know more about Peter Berwick. Joey, reach out to Kansas City and the other cities, see what they can tell us. Andy, let me know as soon as you get something from the FBI. Sandy, take CSI over to the Ellis and scour that room. I'm going back out to Druid Hills. After looking at the crime scene photos, there are a couple of things I need to check out there."

Damien turned to Mick, "I'm going out there with her."

"We'll both go," Mick assured him. I'll show you a little trick about that. But first, come with me to the PSAP." Mick led Damien down one floor to a large room. It was filled with desks and computer consoles. Each desk was free standing with sound-deadening panels around it. On the back wall large tv screens displayed a live view of the streets of Atlanta and her suburbs. About a dozen of the desks were occupied. The room was surprisingly quiet despite the activity.

"This is the 911 center. These computers don't time out. They are always on. They all can access the servers. All you need is the case number. Pick one and try it."

Damien looked at several empty consoles. They all had separate keypads with a mouse or trackball. "I need a laptop," he told Mick. "Something with a flat space below the keyboard,"

"The supervisor stations have laptops." He walked to a desk slightly apart from the rest of the cluster. "There are four of these. Usually only two are in use during shift."

Damien ran his finger over the touchpad and smiled when the cursor responded."This one will work."

Mick showed him where the other three supervisor stations were in case the first was occupied when he needed it. "Now let's head out to Druid Hills."
