Part 5 - Shadows
The man in the suit approached him with a hand held out," Hi, I am Major Mick Jordan, Angie's dad."
Damien stood and shook his hand. "Damien..." He realized he did not know his last name.
"It's alright," Mick told him. "It will come back. I've met more than a few vics but not one has followed Ang back to her office before."
"Well, I, uhhh," Damien was confused. It had not occurred to him that there might be others in the same situation as him.
Mick looked around. "It's gonna get busier in here as the shift changes. You wanna get a cup of coffee?"
That really surprised Damien. He could not pick up a pencil. How was he going to drink a cup of coffee? Mick Laughed. "Figure of speech. C'mon."
He led Damien to a dark corner office. "The lieutenant won't be back tonight. Have a seat."
Damien sat across the desk from Mick. His mind whirled. It had not been twenty-four hours since he saw himself cut down and now he was sitting in an office having a normal chat with another, what? Ghost? Spirit?. It had been an extraordinary day.
Mick realized that the enormity of the situation was just hitting Damien. He sat and watched him for a few minutes. Then he just started talking..
He talked about his early days at APD. About how proud he was when Angie entered the academy and then graduated with top honors. How she advanced quickly through uniform division.
"When she got promoted to detective, I was commander of Major Crimes. I didn't want there to be any hint of nepotism, so I switched over to Support Services; the 911 room and all of that. But I got my old partner, Eddie Loomis, named to Major Crimes. So I could still watch out for her." He paused for a moment, "and I am still doing it to this day."
"How did you," Damien paused; not sure how to ask it.
Mick laughed. "How did I get here? Heart attacks. Two of them."
Mick talked for hours, telling stories of the APD. When he felt Damien was ready, he asked, "Do you remember why you were in Druid Hills last night?"
"No. I can't even remember my last name. I have no idea where Druid Hills is or why I was there."
"It's the Emory University neighborhood. Pretty exclusive. The Fernbank Science Center is there. The CDC. Does any of that sound familiar?"
Damien shook his head.
"Well, your memory will come back. I've seen it before. Just give it time."
"But that's the problem. I don't think I have time. I think someone's life is in danger. But I can't remember who."
"Angie will figure it out. She's good."
"I don't know if she will. They missed a clue at the scene but I can't tell 'em about it. I need to do something. But I can't. I'm just a useless shadow."
"Even shadows can have an impact. C'mon, the crime scene photos should be up by now." They left the office and crossed the room to Angie's desk. "They are all digital now," Mick explained as though it was a new thing. For him, it probably was.
Angie's laptop had timed out. Damien could not get access to it. He slammed his fist on the table but even that wasn't satisfactory. He could not shake the feeling that time was running out.
