Part 22 - Auction

Damien felt a presence just behind him. "How is she doing?" Erin asked, nodding towards Melody in her hospital bed.

Damien realized what that meant, why she was there. "Erin, I'm sorry." Then he looked back down at Melody. "She is going to make it, thanks to you."

"We did it together." She squeezed his arm. "I am going to go check on the other two, then I better get back."

Damien waited until his sister, Barbara, got there, and then went off in search of Mick. A fury had been growing in him, and he wanted to see what he could do about it.

Damien found Mick on the roof of police headquarters, leaning against the parapet. As Damien looked out at the city, the carpet of foliage below them surprise him.

"Atlanta has the densest tree canopy of any major American city," Mick told him. "I never came up here when I was working." He sighed. "Quite a night. You did good. You work well from the shadows."

"I need to know more about what we can do; what I can do. This whispering in the ear thing, how does it work? Can I 'jump' to someone if I don't know them?"

Mick spread his hands, turning his thumbs up. "I don't know. It's not like there is a manual for this. I just try something. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Like talking to Angie. For that, I think you need to have a connection, like you and Erin had."

"I just don't know," he continued. "Sorry, Bud. Best I can tell ya is try it, and if it don't work, try something else. You're a smart guy. You figured out that computer thing. I never thought to try that. But I gotta ask, why do you wanna know? Melody's safe. You did that. Why are you even still here?

Damien told him about seeing the two guys that had turned on the gas. About brushing past them as they left the house. "They are contract killers; selling themselves out to the highest bidder. I wanna find those guys and stop them."

"Then focus on that tingle. That would be your best connection to them. If ya get lost, then just jump back to me. Use me as a home base. I got no plans to go anywhere."

Mick turned to his friend, but Damien was gone. He shook his head and looked back out at the city.
