Part 19 - Rotten
Angie was realizing that command was not just sitting back and watching things happen. There was some of that. It was fascinating to watch the thermal images from the drone as the Swat team surrounded and apprehended the two suspects.
At the same time the SWAT leader was sending the "clear" signal, Sandy came on the radio advising they needed the fire and rescue teams ASAP because of gas in the basement. Angie hadn't even transmitted the go ahead to that team yet but didn't question her. As she sent an urgent request to dispatch, patrol radioed that they had lost the two men they had been following. Angie acknowledged that report..
She radioed the sergeant in charge of the roadblocks that the fire department would be coming through and to send the stand-by ambulances up to the house. She was told they had just stopped a suspicious panel van from entering. The van had restraints bolted to the floor in the back.
Angie told him to take the van and driver to the 6th. They would deal with him later. She also tasked the patrol sergeant with coordinating the search for the two men who were seen leaving the scene, advising him they were only suspects, but could be dangerous.
Upstairs in the house, Lucy approached the family room cautiously. When she saw that the men were in custody, she described the situation to the SWAT leader. The keys were quickly located and he sent a man to the basement with Lucy. He sent another outside to find the gas meter and turn it and the electricity off. Joey grabbed the arm of Shockley and motioned to the fourth team member. "We've got them. Go help."
Sandy went back into the basement after calling in the cavalry. Her eyes started watering immediately and her nose stung with from what smelled like rotten eggs. She thought, "it's getting worse." She saw Judy in a pool of light on the floor by the wine cellar gate. Grabbing her arms, she started dragging her to the stairs.
Joey and the SWAT team leader hustled their prisoners out the side door and turned them over to two unis. "Get them clear of the building, It's gonna blow." They told the FBI task force guy to get clear, too, but he followed when they ran back into the house.
Lucy ran down to the basement, keys in hand, with two SWAT men following. She squeezed past Sandy and Judy on the stairs. One of the men lifted Judy and carried her up and out.
Sandy turned to go back to the cage, but the other SWAT man pushed her up the stairs. "Go. We got this. Help is coming."
Damien was at Melody's side as Lucy swung the gate open. "Hang on, Mel. Help is here."
Lucy grabbed the first girl she came upon and started dragging her by her shirt collar. The male officer scooped her up and ran. Lucy turned back and grabbed Melody by her arm. Her eyes were watering and her chest hurt as she backed out of the cage dragging the girl. Joey and the SWAT team leader arrived. The FBI man right behind them.
"Hang on to my vest and follow me out," The bigger man told Lucy as he easily lifted Melody over his shoulder.
The task force guy had pushed past them into the wine vault. He got one arm of the remaining girl over his shoulder and then Joey was there to help. As they crossed the room to the stairs, Damon was back in the shadows, standing over Erin. "Over here," he hollered, but nobody heard him.
