Alex shot me a glance as I settled into my chair, a large bottle of water in hand. "Running late again? What's the excuse this time?" he teased, grabbing the completed Rubik's cube from my desk and ruining it completely. I was feeling too sick to care much about. My thoughts were consumed by more urgent matters, like this baby inside me and how it's depriving my body of everything I need by making me vomit excessively every morning, without fail.

"Traffic," I replied with a sigh, taking a gulp of water and hoping it would stay down.

He raised an eyebrow. "But you told me you walk now that you live close by."

"Foot traffic," I shot back with a sarcastic smirk, sealing the bottle and placing it back on my desk.

He raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright, you don't have to tell me, it's none of my business." He returned the Rubik's cube to my desk. "I just don't want you to get in trouble with the boss man over there. He already sort of hates you, and I'd hate to see my favorite coworker get booted."

"I'll be fine. I called ahead, and he didn't seem too upset about it." For obvious reasons I couldn't share just yet. Though I will say, he had a little attitude about it at first until I practically yelled his ear off about how it was his DNA making me feel this way—he was a bit more understanding after that.

Alex leaned against the low wall that divided our desks, a playful smile on his face. "That's nice, I guess. So, have you thought about going out with me yet?"

I shot him a quick look, pausing my fingers over the keyboard as I was about to respond to an email. "Alex, how many times do we have to go through this?" It felt like he had asked me this a million times already. He's luckily he's been a good friend to me over the years or else this situation would have been taken to HR—it is annoying, but I've learned him and his advances are relatively harmless.

"I know, but you're single now. So I thought maybe—"

"I'd agree to a date and risk ruining our friendship?" I interrupted, finishing his thought that was heading in a direction I didn't want to go.

To my annoyance, he nodded. "Exactly. I mean, let's be honest here what's the worst that could happen? We go out, have a good time and a few drinks, and if it doesn't work out, we just go back to being friends and say we gave it shot."

I sighed and shook my head, turning my attention back to my screen. "Alex, I love you, but no. Now go back to your desk and focus on your work before I have to call the boss man out here."

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Not even one date. You might actually enjoy it. And if it's terrible, I promise to never bring it up again."

I couldn't help but let out a small laugh, despite my growing frustration. "You're really pushing your luck here, you know that?"

"Maybe," he replied, a grin spreading across his face.

"Alex, I appreciate your interest, it's flattering, but I'm not ready for any of that right now."

"Fair enough," he said, finally straightening up and retreating to his own desk, though the playful smile never left his face. "But one day you will be, and I'll be in the front of the line."

Talia suddenly appeared beside Alex, giving him a light shove so she could take up the space he was just in. "And she still won't choose you," she said with a teasing smirk.

Alex shot her an irritated look. "No one likes an eavesdropper."

She gestured to the desk nearby. "I'm literally right there. I don't even have to try to hear your ridiculous attempts."

I shook my head at their banter and quickly replied to an email that had been lingering in my inbox for days. Standing up, I announced, "Okay, I'm going to let Mr. Skywalker know I'm here and see if he needs anything."

Talia interrupted, "That might not be a good idea. He's in a meeting with someone right now."

"A meeting?" I frowned, glancing at my desk calendar where I had our entire month mapped out. There was nothing scheduled for this morning, just one meeting later around noon, and I knew Destiny wasn't in yet since her flight barely landed Thierry minutes—I would know, I'm the one who booked it—so it couldn't be her.

Talia shrugged. "Some blonde walked in there about fifteen minutes ago, and they've been in his office since."

I looked at his office door, which was closed when it usually stood ajar. "I'm going to check anyway." He had told me on the phone to let him know when I arrived, so he couldn't be mad if I interrupted this so-called meeting.

As I approached the door, I hesitated, my hand hovering over the handle. I suddenly felt anxious about what I might see since I had this pressing feeling in my chest. But I quickly shook off the feeling and opened the door, only to stop in my tracks when it swung halfway open. There he was, standing with the blonde woman with her perfectly styled hair and tailored suit. She was looking up at him, her hand gripping his tie.

She wore a bright smile while he stood there, his face serious and his brows furrowed. With a soft pull on his tie, she drew him closer, pressing her lips against his. My heart sank as I stood frozen in the doorway. I had a feeling something like this might happen, but I never expected to feel this way—so utterly betrayed and hollow.

I shut the door as fast as I had opened it, my throat suddenly dry—what an asshole. He had the nerve to criticize me for thinking about one single date, and now he was kissing some girl in his office, less than ten feet from where I was.

I wanted to slap myself for letting him into my bed last night; again. I felt sick and used, like I was exactly what I said I was; an object of desire—I should have seen this coming from a mile away. But the way he had looked at me, the way he had held me, it all felt so genuine in the moment. But now, after seeing that, it was clear that everything I accused him of yesterday was correct. A man like him is always going to have a roster to keep him satisfied. I may be the mother of his child—an accident not meant to happen—but that's all I'm going to be.

Of course that's all I'm going to be, I never expected anything else, did I?
(Just so you can understand her feelings a bit: Girlie has slept with him three times already and although I didn't write that part out—so sorry smut lovers—connections are formed in those kind of moment so of course she's gonna have some kind of feelings or even just crush, they've also been around each other a lot more. But the situation is not ideal, which also means that there's going to be a lot denial.)

I quickly turned and headed back to my desk, my friends watching me with curious eyes. "They looked busy," I muttered, burying myself in my work, my mind racing with a hundred ways to get back at him. I glanced up, catching the looks from my friends. They knew something was off, and I could see the questions in their eyes. I forced a smile, "As much as I love talking to you two, I have to get some work done before our meeting later with one of our authors." This was my polite way of saying; please get  the hell away from me right now.

They exchanged glances before saying their goodbyes and returning to their desks. Shortly after, Anakin's office door swung open, and the blonde stepped out. She walked confidently through the office and headed straight for the elevator without so much as giving anyone in the room a glance—like she had a mindset that she was better than everyone else or something.

In the doorway of his office, Anakin appeared, his gaze shifting to me, his brows knitting together in confusion. He gestured for me to join him in his office before stepping inside.

I chose to ignore his invitation and pulled my phone from my purse, searching for a specific contact. I quickly texted Jimmy to confirm that I would in-fact be going on a date with him—after all, why not? If Anakin could have his share of women, I could treat myself to something nice too.

A minute later, Anakin reappeared in his doorway, looking frustrated. "(Y/n)," he called out, his voice loud enough for everyone on the floor to hear, "My office, now."
