Chapter 9: The constellation

When the stars still aligned, Jungkook felt as if he grew silent. His gaze was lost in Jimin's universe and he had to force himself to pull out of that endless trance after. “Jimin… Oh.. Um I mean, Dr. Park… I'm sorry.” Jungkook apologized and broke the eye contact as Jimin's face was red after the eye contact was broken. The younger boy then set Jimin onto the hospital bed and gazed at him once more. “I was going to check up on you before going home…”

“Thank you…” Jimin whispered in return and sat down on the bed. “You… Didn't have to come for me… I wanted to learn on my own..” Jimin spoke quietly and looked over at the young boy once again. “But I knew… I wasn't going to get anywhere…”

“I'm sorry for bothering you while you tried to walk.. I just..I saw you cry and then I had to help. If I'm going to be your caretaker, you can't blame me for trying to help you…” Jungkook replied in his soft whisper and looked down at the man sitting on the plain bed. “It's not safe for you to try alone. Do you… Want to try walking with me here? Or do you want to wait for the crutches tomorrow?” Jungkook asked as Jimin looked down and with that, Jungkook held out his hand as the older man hesitated.

“If I… Try now, I promise I won't tell my father. You're my caretaker, so you know what's best for me..” Jimin spoke in his silent whisper as Jungkook tilted his head and still held the hand out for Jimin.

“I'm only doing what you want to do. You want to try walking so I'm offering my help to you.” Jungkook assured and by there Jimin's small hand rose over Jungkook's big hand. As they locked it together, Jimin felt the perfect fit of their hands in contact and took a moment to look at the physical contact they shared. Next, Jungkook gently pulled the man up on his feet once again and kept a gentle grip onto Jimin before he wrapped his other arm around Jimin's waist to pull him by his side. “Is this.. Okay with you?” Jungkook asked in the most delicate tone to his deep voice for Jimin.

“Yes… I'll tell you when we can stop.” Jimin assured and by there, Jungkook suddenly placed Jimin in front of him and made him stand over his shoes. “W-What are you d-doing…?”

“I'm helping you walk.” Jungkook whispered to the man's ear and started to walk; moving his one foot over the other slowly and Jimin was then motioned to walk in front of the boy. Jungkook's hands wrapped around Jimin's waist and his head hung over the older's shoulder to watch where they were going. Jungkook walked and motioned Jimin's legs to move with his and smiled as he helped the man.

“Why… Did you choose to take care of me? You did realize… You won't be here at the facility.. Right?” Jimin asked and dropped his hands to hold against Jungkook's arms wrapped around his petite body. “You don't have to do this… You look like… A man that has too much on his plate…”

“I don't mind. I look up to you, Dr. Park; You're such an inspiration.” Jungkook told the man, but Jimin didn't feel any of those words at all. His mind was set on quitting as soon as possible; just so he wouldn't have to deal with gazing up at the stars once more. He was afraid of it now and thinking of space brought him back to those scary hours wasted in the B248.

“I'm glad I'm such an inspiration…” Jimin whispered to Jungkook and the boy kept walking with Jimin standing over his shoes to sync their movements together. “But… I'm.. Not going to be an astronaut… Anymore…” Jimin assured and took breaks in between to catch his breath since he was getting used to the oxygen on earth than the limited oxygen that was in his spacesuit when he was just in the B248.

“Quit…” Jungkook whispered and then came to a stop and looked at the man. He was surprisingly light and his body was soft and frail, gentle and had a small frame against his own taller and stronger body. “I don't want you to quit… But if you think it's right, go for it… I'm not going to tell you what's right or what's wrong. It's your decision.”

“Thank you… I-I.. I told my father and he got upset… I just can't do it anymore and everytime I look back when I was in space, I was suffering…” Jimin continued on in his gentle and silent whispers. Never exceeding the level he established for himself. Jimin confessed and by there, Jungkook kept walking with Jimin in his arms and facing the front so he could move his legs in sync; just so he could feel as if he was walking again. “Mr. Jeon… You're so nice to me…”

“It's nothing really, I have been expecting you to come for a while now. Let's just say, I'm your biggest fan.” Jungkook added and chuckled softly against Jimin's ear and by there, Lee-Young began to call, however, Jungkook just couldn't answer since he was busy helping Jimin walk. As Jungkook kept practicing with Jimin, Jungkook set his phone on vibrate in his pocket and ignored it all as Jimin felt it against his hip while the boy was just behind him.

“I can sit down for a while…” Jimin insisted, but Jungkook didn't allow it. He then set Jimin by his side and hugged the side of his torso against his so he could move his feet on his own, but this time, Jungkook walked with him and carried him close so he wouldn't add pressure against his frail legs. Of course, Jimin still had his muscled thighs and it looked as if nothing was wrong with it, but it was what he felt on the inside where his leg just didn't function so well.

“No.. I'm helping you, Dr. Park. Whoever it is, they can wait. We always have tomorrow.” Jungkook assured as Jimin took a moment to turn his head and gaze at the boy a little longer. Jimin found Jungkook to be very thoughtful and very smart. The feeling to him made him smile like never before.

“It's so.. Nice… Of you… I think.. I'm going to love the company of my caretaker here visiting me… Until I come home with you.” Jimin claimed and the whole time Jungkook was with Jimin, he didn't think of work, he didn't think of Lee-Young or even his job. All things which he loved so much, didn't appear once in his mind with Jimin. “Please, just.. Call me Jimin. Dr. Park is too fancy.” Jimin whispered and smiled as his eyes closed and his lips curled into the biggest and happiest smile yet. Jungkook looked down at the man smile and soon, he began to smile from it too.

After a good while, Jungkook held Jimin's hands and faced him as he allowed Jimin to move on his own as he still held his hands in case he was to fall. Jungkook didn't know how long they took doing this, but he never thought of stopping in any way to go home. He wanted to stop until Jimin had enough. As Jungkook slowly let go of Jimin's hand and allowed him to walk, Jimin stepped forward and fell onto Jungkook's arms once more. This left the two giggling and laughing the whole time. There they were, spending the long night together that was filled with smiles, giggles and conversations about the stars. Jungkook has never thought he'd find someone with so much similarities… Of course, Jimin shared his love for the stars he used to have and Jungkook still tried to show him that the stars were nothing to fear. But Jimin grew persistent on it.

Jungkook was sitting on the ground as he looked up at Jimin sitting on the edge of the bed to talk to the boy. So far, Jimin felt a deep connection with his caretaker. He was gentle, funny and smart. Jimin thought that maybe he felt this way because he hasn't had any contact with anyone else for a long time now, he stuck onto the person who showed him happiness. So, the older man didn't think much of their interaction that night, But Jungkook did.

To Jungkook, it felt like Jimin and he alone outlined the constellations together. This was all that Jungkook wanted. Someone to talk about so much things based on astronomy. Surely, Taehyung couldn't go far talking about the stars without making a flirty pick up line on Jungkook while Namjoon would literally turn the conversation into a life inspirational speech. But with Jimin, Jungkook found glee when they talked about what made them fall for the stars.

“I think… Learning about Newton was what made me want to discover more… Some may say it was Galileo or Copernicus… But Newton's ‘Theory of Gravitation’ is what brought me into astronomy and when my father bought me a book of the planets. At first, I didn't like it… But then my mother read it to me and I began to fall in love with the planets and wonder... For me, it was my love for the planets, the constellations, the galaxies and then the stars.” Jimin told Jungkook in whispers as Jungkook listened to the man no matter how silent the whispers became. “What made you get into astronomy?”

“It was nothing but the stars for me… I was just a little boy where I looked out my window and fell in love with those ‘glowing white lights' peppered all over the dark night sky. Of course, that's what my mother would always tell me… She'd say I'd call them ‘glowing white lights’ until she told me they were stars. No other astronomers made me love space and no book here. Just the stars alone. I grew curious about it and my family would buy me posters of the Milky Way Galaxy, glowing stars to stick up on the ceiling of my room and I even got a telescope when I was thirteen to try and find my own planet! That didn't go so well…” Jungkook whispered and began to laugh softly. The whole time, Jimin kept his gaze down at Jungkook with a smile plastered onto his pale and weak face.

“Mr. Jeon… You're such a nice man. I can't remember the last time I talked to someone this long… I guess it was one of my two best friends but I haven't seen them for a while. To them, a year… Kim Namjoon and Kim Taehyung… Ah, I miss them… But I know Taehyung wouldn't want to talk to me and Namjoon… Well, he'd just be dissapointed.” Jimin said and locked eyes with Jungkook once more. “So, you could be my friend… Would you like that? Or is it too sad…? My only friend is my caretaker…”

“It's not sad. Oh, just call me Jungkook, Jimin. It's fine really.” Jungkook replied. The boy alone didn't know how bad he wanted to ask Jimin for his side of the story on what came between Taehyung and him… However, asking too much questions was what Jungkook had to cool down on. Especially sensitive questions like that. “I'll… See you tomorrow, Jimin. I'll be sure to visit you tomorrow morning.” Jungkook assured and got up from the cold floor to face Jimin. “Please don't try to walk without anyone watching over you, okay?”

“I understand… Thank you, Jungkook.” Jimin said and his smile just never faded from his face. After they said their goodbyes, Jungkook left the facility and forgot his coat on the ground of Jimin's room. This made the man gawk at it and grow tempted to take it and hide it just so his caretaker wouldn't get in trouble for keeping Jimin up at night.

“He left his red coat…” Jimin whispered. The frail man hesitated to get off the bed and try to drag his legs with each time his hands shifted against the cold floor of the care unit. Dragging himself closer and closer to the coat until… Jimin dropped over it and hugged it close to hold it in his arms. The man held Jungkook's red coat close on the ground as he then took a moment to look back at how Jungkook held him close for them to walk together. Even if it was just a friendly gesture, Jimin was forever grateful for the boy that volunteered to be his caretaker from the very start.
