Chapter 63: Defying odds
“So this has become of us…” Jimin whispered to himself and guided his hands up to cup Jungkook's face to his. “We're going to end up killing each other with this!” Jimin giggled happily as he guided his hands down Jungkook's face to smile. “Jeon Jungkook, soon you'll be going off to space and I'll have to live with that. Until then, just know you're my strong Jungkook no matter what.” Jimin whispered softly and guided his hands down to Jungkook's shoulders to take a good look at him. “I'm glad to have you now…”
“Jimin… Let's do it. Let's go on our first date before the departure. I know this is something you hoped for and I can't wait any longer. Let's eat dinner together. I know how much you wanted to do that ever since you got here.”
“You still remember that silly thing?~ Ah! Don't move you need to recover.” Jimin giggled happily and backed away from his lover. “Just… wait until tonight and we'll be alright.”
“You did realize that I'm not weak, right? It was a two-hour sleep. I can handle our date together. Until then, let's get to training. I have to take on that stupid simulation anyways.” Jungkook assured. Jungkook alone didn't see that he was displaying his own strengths, but Jimin did. He smiled happily at the realization that hit him right after. He was more than proud of his own lover. Eventually, the two walked out of the care unit while holding hands and soon, they joined everyone at the training room. There, Taehyung was sitting on a chair and darting his stare out into the ceiling.
There was an intense machine that throttled the young man around as if he felt an earthquake shaking within his own pod. It was as terrifying as any other ride in an amusement park. This alone left Taehyung gasping for air since it was his second time trying the second level. With such force, it made him glad he didn't eat any breakfast. Jungkook locked his eyes onto Taehyung while he was left silent and gulping to himself.
“Taehyung, how was it?” Jungkook questioned, waving his hand over Taehyung's face to catch the man's attention. Within seconds, Taehyung's round eyes fixed over at Jungkook and made a shaky smile.
“G-Great… Ah, I'm so glad you're here. I was worried as… s-soon as you passed out…O-Oh God that was horrifying…” Taehyung replied in soft whispers and looked down. “I didn't e-even make it to level three… There are five levels! Jungkook… You don't kn-know what's in store for you.” Taehyung warned the young man as Jimin ran his hands up Jungkook's shoulders as the older glared at his own father; watching them from a distance. “It's just like a scary ride… One that goes on and on and on… It NEVER ENDS! Just like the two of you when you both have-”
“WE GET IT!” Jimin interrupted and hugged Jungkook from the back. “It's almost your turn. Go change into your space suit.” Jimin assured and with that, Jungkook looked up to see the simulator that would toss and turn him around; simulating a scary asteroid pelting against the rocket in case anything bad was to happen. They had to get used to the rocket shaking until it breaks atmosphere as well. “You can do it. Do it for me…” Jimin motivated his lover and with that, Jungkook nodded his head. He knew he had to pull through and doing so was going to scare him; but along the way, he learned to get over it for his lover. “I love you.” Jimin whispered and those words alone guided Jungkook to the dressing unit where he received help into his space suit. One thing's for sure, an astronaut like Jungkook just couldn't show his fear of now. It was a long wait until his mission, but never did he ever learn to grow used to the pain he had before. It was only until now, Jimin was able to help him out of it.
As Jungkook was being fit into his heavy spacesuit, this shell was nothing to him now. It felt like a second home due to the many times he was given his own suit on a daily basis. He was no longer afraid. Rather, determined. Jungkook then stepped out of the dressing room to see Taehyung already standing up and getting himself ready to do another once Jungkook was done. As Jimin stood there by the monitor with his headset on, he smiled at Jungkook and waited to guide him from there. Announcing which levels they'll be testing him in.
“We're ready for Mr. Jeon.” One of the technical engineers called out as Jungkook adjusted his helmet in and everything went silent. All he could hear was Jimin's soft voice after.
“Walk into the simulation and strap yourself in like you're going to blast off.” Jimin advised Jungkook. With that, Jungkook followed instructions and sat within the small simulation. With Jimin whispering into his helmet, Jungkook got himself ready and strapped himself into his seat. Starting with level one, Jungkook gripped onto the belts around his torso and within seconds, the pod was slowly beginning to shake. “This is level one… Breaking through atmosphere.” Jimin announced and by there, the pod stood still for a second and began to shake violently. However, Jungkook only closed his eyes and thought of Jimin and let out a huff. “Hold on there, Jungkook… You're doing great, my love.”
Jimin's smile showed as he talked to his lover while Jungkook only kept his eyes shut. “You can do it, you're almost into the second level.” Jimin added as the Head Chief glared at Jimin from where he stood. It was obvious that the elder began to dislike Jimin. He didn't like Jimin for many things and tampering with the astronaut was one of them. Sadly, he knew Jimin was going to stay no matter what. Jimin knew most of the technology himself and was the one to tamper with the B248 in space. Chief Wu viewed Jimin as a problematic child and didn't like him at all after the situation that took place during the early morning.
“Mr. Park, as soon as this mission is over, you can tell your son he is fired.” Hissed the elder before walking out of the unit with Jimin's father; desperately following after him.
“W-What? Why? Is it just because of today?” Asked the elder into a soft and desperate tone. “He won't-”
“Mr. Park, you told me they would break up and you promised me that. So far, they've been dating for the longest and now, Jimin messed with him once again. He's playing it off like their love will pull him through! But I've had it. He tampered with the B248 and Jungkook by getting into his mind! I want him gone as soon as the mission is over.” Chief Wu argued and dropped onto a seat to fold his own arms. “I've had it with him. He's leaving once the mission is over.”
“Chief, if I-”
“Fire him after…” The elder concluded. Mr. Park wanted to hold back how much shame he felt. Even if he wouldn't have to fire him now, he just felt a hole burning within his own chest where the last part of the bond he held with his own son; stood in the isolation that carried only little of their father and son relationship now.
______________________________________
After a long day of training, Jungkook sat in the care unit as he let out a soft huff and finally sat up. His training went well, but the pressure wasn't pleasant. However, at the and of the day, Taehyung and him managed to do a good job and push through this session of training. After a few good hours of the same tossing and turning of the simulation, they grew used to the machine and feel familiar to it. Verifying themselves for that part.
As Jungkook finally stood up, he no longer felt dizzy. He only ate space food after his training and just couldn't wait to have a big meal with his lover for their first date. It was something Jimin has always looked forward to ever since he set the goal of getting himself better from the start. After all Jimin has been through, Jungkook wanted their first date to be now since they had time together.
“Ready to go, Jungkook? Are you able to drive now?” Jimin asked and made a big grin as Jungkook then stood up and stretched with a silent nod. “Where should we go? To a movie cinema after dinner?! Oh I'm so excited! I want to do so much. I've always fantasized our first date out in public. We could get dinner, watch a movie and walk around! I want to do so much, Jungkook!” Jimin said excitedly and clung onto Jungkook's arm like a koala.
“Cool it, Jimin. We can't do all of that now. Let's focus on a dinner and then… we could go to the cinemas after. How does that sound? Then on our next date, we could go to the beach and stargaze there after a meal. But only on our next date!” Jungkook assured and Jimin couldn't help but to smile and giggle happily.
“What are we waiting for?! Let's go eat dinner now!” Jimin ordered as he dragged Jungkook's hand out until they made it out of the care unit. Along the way, Namjoon stood at the station; talking to Taehyung and the older only rose his gaze to look over at Jungkook being dragged around by Jimin like always. Namjoon gave Jungkook a stare and only glanced away the next second. This no longer bothered Jungkook either. The two old friends went separate ways and to Jungkook, he found it weird how close friends could grow to ignore each other within seconds into the new year. At times, it killed Jungkook to start the feud since now, there was no way out of it. Namjoon despised Jungkook no matter what. Just like Taehyung and Jimin had their own feud, they had theirs too.
In the car, Jimin couldn't stop smiling and bouncing in his seat. His eyes fixed onto the clock over the screen on the car dashboard to flash 8:00 PM in the evening. This was going to be their first date and Jimin was getting too excited. One year later, he dreamt of a night out in public like this for the first time so suddenly. The atmosphere around them was glowing with excitement of their first date outside the house they've been in for a while now.
Eventually, Jungkook pulled up at a classy restaurant that had its own grilling right at the center of the table. There, Jimin thought of the many months to years he has last seen such a place. He spent too much time at work and at home, he forgot how romantic it felt like to come to a restaurant like this with the one he loves more than anything in this universe. Within the restaurant, there was white marble countertops on every table, walls as pale and elegant as pearls with red curtains covering each table curved against the walls of the restaurant. Jimin hugged Jungkook's arm as they were then guided to their own seat against the corner where they sat within a booth with red curtains resting over them. The whole restaurant gave out a romantic feel to it and Jimin just couldn't stop looking around with an ecstatic smile plastered over his gorgeous face.
“Oh this is too perfect!” Jimin whispered happily and watched how the host closed the red see-through curtains around them.
“Do you love this place?”
“Yes! Ah, it's so beautiful… it's everything I could ever hope for on my first date with you!” Jimin replied and kept his eyes looking around the restaurant. Just then, Jungkook slowly reached out to hold Jimin's hand with his as they looked through the menus together. All was peaceful on their first date. They ordered beef and chicken to grill over the small grill at the center of the table, vegetables as always where they set it beside the beef to give it more flavor, meat covered in soy sauce as it cooked with a pinch of salt over it, there was two side bowls of noodles, kimchi, hot rice, and two cold bottles of Soju. This was also the first time the couple would drink together out on their first date and Jimin was close to squealing in excitement each second! They were finally having their time together after months and months of training.
On another note, back in space where everything was still and silent, the B248 was moving on it's own, moving in much slower and eventually, it was reaching closer and closer until one month for the mission seemed too far to rescue the rocket. The rescue mission seemed to be pushing in closer and closer since the rocket was reaching the earth's radar. Causing a red light to blink over the monitors of each and every station where Jimin was first spotted. Usually representing danger. With this rocket defying odds, it actually meant that the date of the mission would be pulled in closer to avoid having the B248 become a threat. Jungkook no longer had a month left with Jimin. He had at least a day or two now if they want him and Taehyung to get there within a month in space time.
