Chapter 6: Lift off
Finally after a whole week, the rescue mission was set. Jungkook was quick to arrive at work in the crack of dawn. As soon as the facility opened, Jungkook was right at the entrance with an excited and happy smile plastered over his daring and charming face at 7:00 AM. Most astronomers glared over at Jungkook’s way with bags under their eyes and stepped into the facility once it opened. Not really getting the feeling of excitement. To them, launching a rocket was nothing out of the ordinary; but to Jungkook, it was something extravagant especially when he knew it was a rescue mission to find and bring Jimin back home.
After a long week, Jungkook managed to get the bed in the extra room. He talked to Mr. Park and verified the many things he already had in the room. He had an extra wide drawer to have Jimin's clothes folded in, a comfortable bed --which Jungkook already placed into the room.-- books, or even photographs of people anywhere so Jimin could slowly get used to the gaze of people around him in his comfortable place. With all these things, Jungkook knew Jimin would be very isolated from society. So, it was Jungkook's job to strengthen him up and make sure he has a stable health system to return to society.
The boy rushed into the facility and before he could run over to the big screen where B248 was being streamed through, Namjoon suddenly pulled Jungkook back by his lab coat and made the boy quickly slip his hands out of the arm holes. Escaping his lab coat to rush to the center where his eyes bestowed upon Jimin laying against a wall with belts wrapped around his small body so he could sleep through the solid silence he's been familiar with for such a long time. By now, Jimin had no hopes of living… Yet, he still clung onto his own life and thought that maybe one day, he'll be found and never forgotten. If it wasn't for Jungkook spotting the flashing rocket in the radar, Jimin would have just hoped to kill himself in the rocket alone and have his corpse stay in space to escape the torture.
Jungkook just imagined how horrible it must have been to just be up in space, sitting in an unresponsive rocket, lose strength in the legs, miss the sound of people and the sight of green leaves with blue skies greeting every morning. All of this gave Jungkook a reason to anticipate Jimin's arrival. Until today, it was the day a group of Astronauts were going off to save Jimin from the B248. Even if it will take weeks or a month for them to get back, Jungkook was still going to watch over the camera stream every day until the day he sees Jimin's face once the astronauts show up to save him. By now, Jimin was still holding on.
Jimin slept against the wall strapped up against it and tried to catch up on sleep. Unaware that he was finally found. He lived his life in space feeling miserable and to Jungkook, it felt like he could feel the man's pain with just the sorrow look in his eyes each time he wakes up to see that a rescue was all in his dreams.
“You'll be safe, Jimin… You'll come back very soon…” Jungkook whispered and Namjoon caught the boy whispering this while keeping his gaze locked onto Jimin fast asleep within the B248.
“You did realize that he can't hear you, right?” Namjoon chimed in and threw the lab coat over the boy's head and let out a laugh. “Calm down there, lover boy. You're making a scene. Can you keep your love for Dr. Park, in for a second? You'll get Taehyung jealous!” Namjoon teased and with that, Taehyung appeared around the corner once more; carrying the cardboard cup holder with three cups of coffee for his two closest friends.
“Get who jealous?” Taehyung interrupted and pushed his glasses up as a glint reflected through them and made Namjoon flinch. “Anyways… I'm sorry for yelling at you yesterday, Jungkook… I was just too upset.” Taehyung apologized and handed Namjoon his cup of coffee. The man then walked up to Jungkook and gave him his hot cup of dark coffee with an assuring smile. “It was unprofessional for me to yell at you like that… I felt horrible all day! Just know that I had my thoughts and-”
“That's alright, Taehyung. I get it.. But I'll still watch over my Jimin.” Jungkook said and with that, it suddenly made the two flinch as Jungkook became unaware of what he just said.
“M-My?” Taehyung whispered to himself and with that, Jungkook rose a brow.
“What?”
“That's what you said! You said ‘My Jimin!’ Jungkook is in love!!” Namjoon teased and this made Jungkook quickly shake his head to deny it.
“Oh! So you're cheating on me?!” Taehyung rose his voice and tried his best to hide his laugh as Jungkook then began to shake his head once again.
“No! I- ugh… I was thinking of Lee-Young when I said Jimin!” Jungkook argued and by there, Taehyung began to fake cry.
“Now I'm invisible to you? Namjoon, take him away!” Taehyung shouted as Jungkook began to laugh and shoved the older boy. “-AH!”
“Alright, Jungkook go watch over your boyfriend and we'll be over here.” Joked the older man as the younger rolled his eyes and kept walking to the center of the lab where he kept his eyes focused onto Jimin; watching his chest move up and down softly to breathe in his sleep. As Jungkook watched over the astronaut through the camera screen of the B248, Namjoon pulled Taehyung close enough to whisper into his ear. “Jungkook.. Is going to end up breaking Lee-Young's heart..”
“Are you serious?” Taehyung asked and gawked over to see Jungkook making another smile at the screen where Jimin was still fast asleep.
“Of course I am… He hasn't smiled like that towards anyone but his girlfriend. I think he'll end up leaving her for our Jimin. The amount of time Jungkook is willing to waste on him shows so much… He may see it as him being friendly for now, but I think otherwise.” Namjoon concluded and dropped his arm around Taehyung's shoulder. “Let's give him some privacy.” Chuckled the man as Taehyung stood right by Namjoon to gaze at Jungkook and tilt his head. Noting that he too found a big change in Jungkook's behavior. But Jungkook alone never found it.
About two hours later, Jimin finally woke up and looked around. For a nap that only took two minutes for him, was two hours for them. The boy looked around in the vacant rocket and let out a sigh once more as Jungkook was now sitting in front of the screen in silence. He held a pout to see Jimin so distraught. Jimin was dreaming again and thought he heard someone call to him.
“Someone… Save me…” Jimin's voice called out in the rocket and Jungkook picked up the sound and heard him for the first time. It was as silent as a soft whisper, delicate and admirable. Jungkook loved the voice of the older boy and heard his desperate plea. “S-Somebody…”
Jungkook listened to this and before he could raise his hand to touch the screen where Jimin hung against the wall to sleep, the commander marched in with Mr. Park by his side. The commander was an elder, stress hairs mixed in with his black silk and trimmed hair, round glasses and an outfit of a black and white suit. He carried a mean face, but he was always serious when it came to work. The commander was notified that the astronauts boarded the rocket B400 and was ready to rescue Park Jimin in the B248.
“Mr. Jeon! Stop staring at Jimin and come with us. B400 is about to launch.” Stated the commander and this made Jungkook jump up and rush over to the commander's side. Of course, if it wasn't for Jungkook catching the signal first, the B248 would have lost the signal within seconds so he was quick to find it. The boy was unaware of the rescue mission going to take place since he spent hours staring at the screen where Jimin just woke up and complained about how desperate he was to have someone rescue him from his solitude. Jungkook wished he was just one of the astronauts outside sitting in the B400; getting ready to save Jimin in space. However, Jungkook wasn't skilled enough to do so and if he wasn't strong enough, he'd be most likely to die during lift off.
The young astronomer followed the Commander and Mr. Park to a screening room where most astronomers and rocket technicians sat to watch over the lift off. Everyone locked their gazes at the many astronaut cameras within the spaceship and they waited for the signal to go. Those very own astronauts were interviewed for the press and had pictures taken before embarking in their new expedition to the stars. Jungkook just stood there gawking at them in jealousy. He didn't know how he would grow to envy an astronaut so badly.
“Are we ready? Objective, rescue Dr. Park from the B248. If anything happens, are you all ready to die serving the KSCU? Good. Get ready for liftoff..” Instructed a woman communicating to the astronauts as a camera fixed on the B400 to stream the rocket taking off. By there, the countdown began and rings of flames erupted from under the rocket, making clouds of smoke rush out to show that the rocket was ready to go.
“We're ready.” Replied one of the astronauts as they kept their head pointed upwards and their chairs locked them in securely.
“Three.. Two… One… Lift off.” The woman announced and with that, the Rocket B400-C3 took off and the astronauts kept their gaze upwards and felt their bodies being pushed back against the seats once they flew up until the rocket broke atmosphere and they travelled faster. Jungkook was at awe and hurried out of the room to see Jimin through the stream at the lab, eating the bland space food. Jimin sucked out of a black pouch of juice within a bag and chewed on dried fruit that didn't taste the same as a regular fresh fruit would taste like. Along with that, he ate tough nuts sealed into a vacuumed clear bag not really enjoying the dry food.
“Jimin! You'll be rescued soon!” Jungkook shouted in his head and knew to keep it down on the outside. He kept his gaze on Jimin consuming his meal that gave him nutrition, however, it just wasn't enough to fill him up like always. It was just then, Jungkook realized the pain in Jimin's eyes how he closed his beautiful and brown gaze and sat against the floor to eat. Trying to imagine that he was back home enjoying a good bowl of hot, delicious, Kimchi stew with all the spices, shredded cuts of beef, scallions, steamed vegetables and rice on the side. All of those meals Jimin hoped to consume at that very moment, stretched further away as he opened his eyes to eat another dry raisin in his hands along with a salty peanut within its hollow shell.
That night, Jungkook reached home with work in his bag; which consisted of notes and calculations on distances between each planet from the Andromeda Galaxy. The boy had no intention to help Taehyung in his studies, but he just couldn't leave Taehyung to stress over calculations like that. So, Namjoon pitched in to help as well and the three worked on the Andromeda Galaxy together. Jungkook dropped his bag onto the couch and was close to running into his room to sleep when, his eyes met with Jimin's future room. He'd always walk into it and try to pretend he was seeing it for the first time. Just to create a scene he imagined Jimin's reaction would be towards the lovely room.
Jungkook stepped into the room and looked at the wide bed up against the wall with black covers, the yellow planet floating above it with the B248 rocket by its side, glow in the dark stars plastered everywhere, pictures of the astronauts and Jimin himself to the wall up ahead and two wide drawers for the boy; holding a mirror, jewelry and books on astronomy. Jungkook loved how the whole room came to be. He made sure he moved all of his office furniture to his own room, yet, he kept his black couch up against the wall by the window for Jimin. “Soon…” Jungkook whispered to himself. Taking one last look around the room before leaving once more to finally catch up on rest after such a long day at work.
