Chapter 43: My Theory
“Are you out of your mind? My son can't go back, he's still recovering, Chief Wu!” Replied Mr. Park as he shook his head almost instantly. “I won't let you send my son out there…”
“Still recovering? Maybe until after…” Chief Wu continued and walked down the staircase. “I'm not trying to hurt him, Mr. Park… He knew what he signed up for and this is his job. Besides, I want him to go only because he was in that rocket for an earth year and only he tampered with the rocket for so long.”
“Send someone else! Figure it out yourselves, I'm not letting him go back up there!” Mr. Park bickered and folded his arms. Leaving some more astronomers to stand there and look at the elder. “He's broken and putting him back together will only crack him into smaller fractals.”
“We have plenty of time. Still have a good two years or such. If we can get him there by the end of this year, he'll be coming back by the middle of next year. It's only business, Mr. Park.”
“He'll go through hell all over again! Do you know how hard it was for him to finally grow used to things? He was so pale… So weak and tired…” Argued the elder, but the Chief only relied on business. Of course, he cared about Jimin and his well being, but with that rocket out in space that could become a hazard, he could only urge for a plan and hope for the best. After all, Jimin was the only one tampering with the rocket before.
“I know that… But what else can we do? Please give him all the help he needs. We'll try by the end of this year. I hate to do this to him… But he's an astronaut, what more would he be? He knew the risks and still took it.” Chief Wu concluded as Mr. Park grew nervous at the thought of it. He didn't want to send Jimin out there so he could come back as frail as ever. Even at that moment, Mr. Park just didn't want Jimin as an astronaut so the man could get healed and then wreck his health once again.
“W-What if he quits?”
“Oh he can't. This was him tampering with the B248, he has to. I'm sure you can find a way eventually.” The Chief replied and walked away from the elder and left astronomers to desperately find a way so Jimin wouldn't have to go off to space and risk his own life. At that moment, Taehyung glanced over at Namjoon and had a worried look over his face.
“What is the most likely percentage of Jimin passing out in space?” Taehyung questioned as Namjoon placed his arm around Taehyung to pat the younger softly. “Please tell me…”
“I'd say a good ninety-five percent.” Namjoon whispered in response and made Taehyung stand there with worry shooting through his blood. “We need to find different ways. We can't lose him again!” The older astronomer assured and made Taehyung's face light up with the idea. “Many other astronomers will find a way, Jimin shouldn't be sent up there. We need a healthy astronaut…”
For the remainder of that hour, astronomers gathered around in groups to take apart footages of Jimin's actions in the B248 to catch his gestures on which wire he tried to fix. However, they hit a brick wall when they tried to understand what Jimin did when the footage cut on before he was discovered. They came up with theories and used blueprints of the duplicated rocket of the Rocket B248-C12 and it was the rocket they had just outside on the launch pad. It was the blueprints of the Rocket B400-C3; an exact replica of the B248. The two rockets were manufactured, programmed and fixed the same, but at times, the B248 had one more flaw than the B400. That's when astronomers tried to guess Jimin's actions; knowing well that they couldn't interrupt Dr. Park while he still recovering. Any questions about the rocket at this moment would just stress Jimin out!
As everyone grew desperate to find some answers, Jimin was back with Jungkook; standing at the doorway of the house. By now, Jimin wore denim overalls, yellow timberlands, a white sweater underneath the overalls and a black beanie over his brown and silk hair. He was ready to go to the grocery store with Jungkook for the second time, but he was afraid to do so as soon as he stepped closer to the doorway.
“Listen, I don't want to rush this. You just got better and I understand if you don't want to try today. It's too soon to do so.” Jungkook spoke to Jimin as the older kept his eyes locked onto the grass outside in silence. “Let's try another day, I don't want to force this on you…”
“N-No… No I want to. Then this will mean we can get to our first date outside of this house! Please… Please, Jungkook…” Jimin whispered and turned to the younger. “If I can't take it… I'll stick right by you like always. Then you'll protect me.” Jimin continued until Jungkook finally sighed and grabbed Jimin's hand with his. He had his doubts of leaving with Jimin like this. He just wished to go back so he couldn't put this into Jimin's head to make him try to rush things for their date. It just came to show how much love blinded Jimin into this fantasy where he could do many things outside his phobia; separated from cold reality that all of his actions were limited in the real world.
“I don't want you to push yourself, Jimin.” Jungkook whispered and softly rose the older's beanie up to caress Jimin's hair back, before adjusting it over his head once again.
“I-I'm not… Jungkook, I want it…” Jimin begged as he held Jungkook's hand tighter. “It's worth a try…”
“If anything happens…” Jungkook then stopped as he let go of his own hand and took off his sweater. Jimin was confused to see this as he watched Jungkook grab a coat and hold the coat open to expose his white T-shirt underneath it. “You come closer and I'll wrap you in here. We could be a man with four legs!”
“A-Ah! Jungkook stop it!” Jimin giggled and buttoned up his lover's coat to the last two at the top of the warm coat. “Let's go… If I hold your hand tighter, that's when I won't be able to take this any longer…”
“Then I'll wrap my arm right around you to pull you close. Will that be okay?” Jungkook asked cautiously as Jimin nodded and finally walked out the doors with his lover. It was the first time in a long month he stepped through those doors to have the outside greet him with the warm sun in the cold afternoon. At that moment, Jimin knew he was going to be alright.
The two began to walk to the grocery store as Jimin locked his gaze down at the concrete each time they walked and walked for minutes. “What… About a car...” Jimin asked as Jungkook chuckled and tilted his head at the sound of it falling off from Jimin's lips.
“What about a car?”
“We need a car.” Jimin mentioned and made a smile. “We need a nice, big, red, car!” Jimin continued on and smiled at his stargazer. “I'll get one for the both of us! And by both of us...I mean for you. I don't drive, but you can!”
“You're so excited about this red car.”
“It will be my gift to you, Jungkook. Think of it as my thank you gift. Remember, I was paid by the K.S.C.U once I came back, that's why I offer to pay for food you order. I was paid a lot...”
“No. If I'm going to take care of you, I will.”
“You don't want me to be your sugar daddy, Jungkook?”
“What? No! Crazy… I'm the daddy in this relationship.” Jungkook teased as Jimin started to laugh at the younger's response. It seemed that only now, Jimin started to have such a lovely time. This time, he didn't need noise cancelling headphones, nor did he need to look away from every eye that locked onto his. Now, Jimin only locked his focus into the eyes of his lover before him; that was enough to distract him from the outside world.
When the couple reached the grocery store, Jungkook pushed the cart with Jimin in between his arms; pushing the cart as well. It looked as if Jungkook was protecting his most prized possession from the cruelty of the world; and that was the real reason of it all. Jungkook walked with Jimin, pushing their cart until they stopped in the frozen food aisle. There was a few people here and they glanced Jimin's way before looking down at their frozen food in their hands. With sight of people nearby, Jimin slowly gripped onto Jungkook's arms and held on tightly. Showing that he was growing afraid once again.
“Shh… Think of me as the only one in your universe, okay? L-Look, tell me what you want from the ice cream section! Anything…” Jungkook assured as Jimin focused right at the containers of ice cream just within the big freezers before him. “Chocolate?”
“I like chocolate…” Jimin said and smiled before pointing to a box of chocolate popsicles right behind the glass he pressed his small index finger against like a child. “I… I know it's a start of a cold season to eat something like ice cream, but I want to eat them inside with you. We could watch romantic movies too...” Jimin spoke softly and Jungkook had to constantly rest his head over Jimin's shoulder to hear him.
“Of course we can. When will we not?~” The younger asked as Jimin pulled open the freezer and took out the box of chocolate popsicles to set them into the cart. By there, they kept walking forward. Always remembering to bring groceries that never exceeded the limit to carry all the way home. Jimin didn't like this one bit. If he wanted to bring more groceries, he couldn't since the walk home would be such a hassle. This tempted Jimin to surprise his lover with a car as soon as possible so they could go anywhere and take as much as groceries the car could carry. Even if Jungkook didn't believe Jimin was going to actually do it, it made the present much more surprising.
After a successful trip to the grocery store, Jimin felt so much better. Even if it took a little struggle and his eyes kept avoiding many other gazes, he felt progress and was absolutely proud of it. He carried groceries with Jungkook in the cold; but the sun up above them warmed up their faces each time they pointed their heads up to look at the blue skies up above them. Jungkook looked at the blue skies and let out a scoff that faded into a smile.
“Jimin… When will you ever tell me about your expedition?”
“Hm? Why do you want to know about it? It was a very traumatic experience… There's nothing much to go in on it for.” Jimin answered as Jungkook kept walking with Jimin by his side. “It's nothing extravagant…”
“It seems extravagant to me… I've always wanted to learn about your expedition. I look up to you so much, I even wanted to hear your story and probably… make a book about it…” Jungkook mentioned and looked at Jimin. “Like a biography on you leading up to the expedition. Of course, I know it won't be that long. So, a novel is fine.” Jungkook told Jimin and it was enough to make Jimin stop right on his tracks.
“A… Biography about me?”
“Yes! Before you get interviewed in the news or magazines, let me be the first person you tell your story too! It means so much for me to do this for you… I love the stars and hearing about you venturing out there, makes me get so excited. Before I met you, I would come up with questions, theories, and stories on how it would feel to be up there. Will you feel the cold around your suit? Do you hear silence and the only sound of your breathing?” Jungkook asked and chuckled. “Those I knew all the answers to… But, they never stopped me from making new theories on how you would adjust to earth based on evidence dealing with former astronauts… And I even made a prediction based on how you would think of me at first glance.”
“What was your prediction?” Questioned Jimin and smiled at Jungkook once he asked. Yet, all the younger man did was throw his arm over Jimin's shoulder while still carrying the groceries.
“At first glance, Park Jimin would be friendly and very open towards his caretaker… And they would become close friends… Or maybe even closer.” Jungkook replied. Smiling at Jimin happily after telling the older his prediction that of course, was confirmed by the older himself and his true actions before to make it an actual theory. They looked into each other's eyes with glee right after, still unaware of the big task that was coming towards Jimin, all tracing back to the abandoned Rocket B248-C12 lost in space.
