Chapter 12: Closer than a satellite

Jimin smiled to himself facing the opposite direction of the room where Jungkook was standing behind him. Thoughts of living under the same house as Jungkook made Jimin smile happily and get excited. “What should we do… First?” Jimin whispered and made a smile as he glanced back at Jungkook. “Once… I get… There…”

“Well, I can cook anything for you. Name something you like and I can-”

“C-Can… You make… Me.. Pork or beef…. Or.. Even Kimchi stew?” Jimin asked in his usual whispers as Jungkook smiled and nodded his head after. “I haven't tried those in such a long time…”

“Of course. Anything you want.” Jungkook promised as he then placed his hand over Jimin's hair and messed the boy's hair around. Yet, Jungkook knew he couldn't touch Jimin and as soon as he did, he gasped and pulled back thinking Jimin was going to lose it, but the older man didn't. He sat there and giggled to himself as soon as Jungkook had that reaction. “I-I'm sorry…”

“It's okay. Doesn't bother me… Since I… Know you're my… Caretaker…” Jimin spoke quietly as Jungkook smiled and placed his hands in his pocket to gaze at Jimin a little longer. The two then went into silence with just their eyes meeting. They alone didn't know what this was, but none of them wanted to pull back. They sought this moment as something of them becoming close friends after everything. However, Jungkook's mind was silent just like reality… He had no thoughts at all when looking at his inspiration for his work. That's all he saw Jimin as… His inspiration and a good friend. But Jimin on the other hand, found Jungkook as someone he began to enjoy seeing every now and then.

Suddenly, their contact was broken once Mr. Park walked in with a tray of Jimin's first breakfast on earth. The steel tray contained a main porcelain bowl of green and boiled seaweed soup, noodles along with beef flavored broth that contained small strips of boiled beef, and on the side was a bowl of hot rice and spicy kimchi in a small glass container there as well. It was more than something Jimin could eat in the B248, so the man gawked at it in silence and looked back to his father.

“Here, this is your first meal back and I made sure it wasn't too much. It's something to get you used to eating bigger portions.” Said the father as Jimin kept staring at the meal. He wanted to eat, but he knew he wouldn't finish it all and put the rest to waste.

“My...appetite isn't… That… Big…” Jimin whispered as he then glanced at Jungkook quickly before looking away as soon as the younger boy looked at the older in worry. Jungkook wanted the frail man to eat, but the older was worried and this prevented him from eating.

“If you don't eat, how can you get better enough to go over to Jungkook's place? You need to at least be strong enough to use the crutches.” Mr. Park assured as Jimin then held his hands out to accept the tray. “Eat as much as you can.” Said the elder as Jimin then nodded his head and set the tray over his own lap. “Jungkook, after he's done, can you help him with the crutches? I have to be there to watch over the interns.”

“Of course. I'm in charge.” Jungkook accepted and folded his arms to smile down at Jimin as he tilted his head after.

“Yes you are. After the day is done, you can go home.” Concluded Jimin's father and with that, the elder left Jungkook and Jimin alone. Jimin smiled as he picked up the chopsticks for the first time in a while and looked up at Jungkook.

“I'll be here, Jimin. Take your time.” Jungkook assured and pulled up a chair to the bed as Jimin began to eat. Jungkook could see how much the older man missed eating hot meals and slurping noodles, all he ate for an earth year was nothing but dried fruits, peanuts and air-sealed yogurt or even juice in packages. No matter what was packed for his expedition, Jimin hated eating little food like that. “Do you like it?” Jungkook asked as Jimin nodded his head. Not really talking as he was eating after so long. Just then, Jungkook had no idea of what he was doing; the boy rose his hand up to the napkin, picked the folded cloth up to Jimin's plump lips, and wiped it gently after the man was done slurping the wet noodles sitting in the beef broth.

Now, the boy didn't really think much of it. The mess on Jimin's lips bothered him, so he chimed in to wipe the broth from Jimin's wet lips. After he was done, he folded the napkin once more and set it down as Jimin was left to gaze at his small glass container of Kimchi. “Sorry, I was a little bothered by that.” Jungkook whispered into his soft and soothing voice and rested his head down onto the bed as he looked up at Jimin grow silent. “I'm… Sorry..”

“That's okay…” Jimin assured in his whisper and looked at Jungkook once more to assure him he was okay. Jimin was actually blushing inside that even on the outside, he grew silent. “You're the only one here for me… I keep thinking you pitied me… Did you?

“I don't pity you, Jimin. I chose to do this because I look up to you. So, I value your existence… I don't do this because I pity you.” Jungkook added as Jimin took one more glance up at his caretaker and grew silent once again. “You're my inspiration.”

“Right… I forgot you told me that…” Jimin answered. Smiling to himself and continued to eat. He began to think of Jungkook in his mind and would constantly turn his head to catch the boy staring, but eventually… Jimin began to feel his heart beat and this caused him to slowly have his doubts and worries on having Jungkook as his caretaker. Jimin then began to imagine the many things that Jungkook would see if he was to take care of him.

By the time Jimin was finally done, Jungkook picked up the tray and pulled a smile. “Come, I need to help you walk.” Jungkook said and found the crutches against the wall at the corner. “If you feel uncomfortable, we can take a break.” Jungkook insisted as Jimin moved his trembling legs over the edge of the bed and Jungkook brought him the crutches. “I've used crutches before, wanna see?” Asked the boy as Jungkook used them and showed Jimin how to use the crutches. “Ah, they're so small!” Jungkook spoke to himself and let out a silent snicker. “This can't carry me, but it can carry you. You're so small, Jimin!” Jungkook continued as Jimin smiled and covered his ears to giggle. Jungkook wasn't whispering at that moment and it harmed Jimin's ears, but he only smiled through it and covered his ears silently. “O-Oh… Jimin I'm so sorry…’

“It's… It's okay… It didn't really hurt that much. I'm fine...really…” Jimin answered and stood up. Unexpectedly, he leaned forward and this made Jungkook swiftly rush to him and bring him into a hug so he could carry the older. “S-S… Sorry..” Apologized the man quickly as Jungkook only smiled and brushed Jimin's brown, silk, hair bangs aside.

“It's okay. I'll be here for you.” Jungkook assured as Jimin felt Jungkook drop his hands down to the older's waist just to pull him up and help him with the crutches.

          “Jungkook…”

         “Yes? Does your arms hurt?”

“N-No… No they don't… Ah, Jungkook… Is it weird… If I smile a lot around you?”

“No it's not.” The boy replied as Jimin was able to stand with the crutches. “Good, now walk with the crutches. Why don't you come to me? Let's practice.” Jungkook stated and walked over to the wall and allowed Jimin to follow with the crutches. However, Jimin stood still and looked up to see Jungkook walking far and far from him. “Can you move your legs?”

          “Yes… But I don't have strength in them…”

“Try to walk. Come to me.” Jungkook repeated once more as he held his arms out to hug Jimin in his arms in case the man falls forward. “Don't be scared. If you fall, I'll catch you.”

“Okay…” Jimin whispered and then, he placed his right foot forward and started to walk with the crutches. Each step he took made Jungkook worry and have his attention locked on Jimin in case he was to fall off.

“You're doing good! Keep going.” Jungkook encouraged the man happily as Jimin was halfway there.

“Jungkook… Do you like being here with me…?” Jimin asked to distract him from the pressure.

“Of course I do. You're a sweet guy.” Jungkook continued as Jimin couldn't stop smiling to himself. “You smile so much… I think you're cute Jimin. Namjoon wasn't kidding.”

“Namjoon…? H-How is he…?” Jimin asked as his eyes then locked onto the ground and watching each step he took. “I-I… Haven't heard… From him… For so long..”

“He's doing great. Him and his wife-”

“He never told me he had a wife…” Jimin continued as Jungkook seemed closer with every slow step he took forward. “How's Taehyung…? Do they mention me here and there?”

“Oh… Taehyung is still around the lab. He has an odd fascination with me and we take it as jokes. It's very funny. They have mentioned you… But it makes Taehyung upset… I'm sorry..” Jungkook apologized to the older and made Jimin come to a stop to think in his head as he glared at the ground in silence.

“..So.. I've been replaced…?” Jimin said in his head and by there, he slowly began to tear up at the thought. In reality, he loved his friends so much; he wanted them to be the first to visit him after his big expedition, but they were far from his grasps now. “Why don't they care enough to see me?” Jimin continued to ask in his head as Jungkook noticed how Jimin stopped walking to just stand there in silence.

“Jimin…? Jimin… It's okay! Don't pay them any mind. Come here..” Jungkook begged and Jimin quickly tossed the crutches forward, dropping back onto the ground where he started to cry and sob into his hands silently.

“No… No… Not okay… I lost… Lost everything..” Jimin sobbed out of breath as his voice cracked into his whispers. After an earth year, Jimin lost his ability to walk, after an earth year, he missed Namjoon's wedding and after an earth year, he lost his two best friends. “N-Nobody cares…”

Only after, Jimin felt Jungkook quickly wrap his arms around his smaller body and hug him close with a small smile over his face. Jungkook understood Jimin's troubles and was there to cheer him up when the man was upset. “Stop… Just stop, Jimin.. I care. Not only because I'm your caregiver, I'm your friend too. Aren't we friends? Isn't that good enough for you? At least it's something. Better than nothing. Am I good enough..for you?” Jungkook questioned in a way to cheer Jimin up as the tears and silent sobs stopped right after. “I'll give you what I can't afford too…”

“Jungkook… I'm sorry…” Jimin apologized once again, but all the younger did was brush Jimin's hair back and smile at him again. “I'm sorry… I can't tell if we're friends and said I have no one…” The man spoke and dried his own tears as Jungkook tried to help him up again. “Y-You won't be here for me all week…”

“But I'll be there for you next week and the rest of your recovery.” Promised the young astronomer to the frail astronaut. Having the usual gleam in his eyes as he still held Jimin into a gentle hug once they stood up together. “...You're not alone since I'll be here. I'll stick to you like a satellite if I have to! It's what a good friend like I… would do for someone as great as you...”
