Chapter 1: My Universe
A young and tall man strutted down the bright and busy streets of Seoul as he had his playlist on shuffle. The attractive man wore a black vest over his white dress shirt, black slacks and classy shoes. His look carried a sense of business and heavy demeanor with every glance he took once he rushed his hair back at the cold midway intersection. His name was Jeon Jungkook; a young astronomer who fell in love with the stars when he was just four. Gazing up every night and hoping to one day discover something new.
Jeon Jungkook was a very charming man; even at times, he chose to be alone and just stargaze. Hoping to have someone by his side to name at least the constellation with. Showing all of the romantic gestures and happy stargazing he chose to do with the one he called his own, there was sadly never a chance he could spend stargazing with his own girlfriend. Jungkook's girlfriend, one of the brightest stars he ever laid his eyes on. There was no end to the love they held for each other. On the other hand, she wasn't very fond of the skies and only focused on doing romantic things she found pleasing. Never wanting to lay down and wish upon a star with her boyfriend. That was something Jungkook looked for, but they were part of different worlds when it came to interests.
Just earlier on the year, Jungkook was given an opportunity to work in K.S.C.U- Korea's star constellation unit; where astronomers and astronauts work together to find other galaxies and send prototypes off to get tested before creating the real deal. Now, this was the unit Jungkook always tried to get into, but there was never an opening. It was always taken by someone and Jungkook could only pray for the spot within the unit. Luckily, his wish was granted and a spot was miraculously opened, which came to a surprise to the stargazer, who would give up a job like this? Of course… He never heard from the employee he replaced or even heard anything about him or her. It felt like their existence was erased and no trace was left. Jungkook loved to think that the ex-employee was transferred and no one wanted to mention the man at all.
The boy took a bus ride to the far facility closed off in a big field. In the building, he had many great friends to support his every decision and stand by him day and night. Of course, there was times where his friends stood closer to him than his own girlfriend. Yet, there wasn't much to expect; the woman alone was beautiful in Jungkook's book, she was smart and many other men chased after her. This was what made Jungkook feel so proud to have her. But, with every beauty, there was flaws since she focused on dancing more and Jungkook was left on hold with calls that used to stretch longer than one hour. After all this time, it dropped from one hour, twenty minutes and down to five minutes on call with his so called beloved.
Jungkook paid no mind that he didn't really have much to think about when it came to his own girlfriend, Choi Lee-young. What really got to him most, was the lack of attention he wanted from his girlfriend. That was the sad part of it all. If he was to ask, she'd be too busy to tend to it all. Of course, he loved her so much and that love was given in return, he just wished for her to have time for him. Her profession was working as a personal photographer alongside her fashion business she just began to work on earlier on the year. With so much deals, laying down and stargazing was something she wouldn't spend her free time on. Her style consisted more of soft cuddles through romantic films.
The young astronomer made it to the big facility in the field that housed all of his colleagues. One rocket stood facing skyward with a launch pad next to it kept empty. For the longest, Jungkook has always seen one rocket in the field. Never two, but there was rumors of it lost somewhere out there and some rumors claimed it was taken apart to get an upgrade. One year later, and it was still ‘getting an upgrade.’ Jungkook took a good look at the rocket and smiled as he walked forward and stepped into the facility. All he listened to was classical music to soothe his mind before he was to take on work, in which, he was also teased at by his girlfriend and close friends at work based on his taste of music.--playfully of course.--
As soon as Jungkook stepped in, he bowed at elders who carried clipboards and some wearing black and white suits to visit and take a good look around. In fact, there were daily visitors and potential interns here and there, especially students who major in physics. Jungkook turned his music off, and set his phone on ‘Do not disturb’ in order to focus. Recently, Jungkook has never found anything big or a ‘perfect’ discovery, but instead of losing hope, he thought of endless miracles to keep looking for something out there.
The young boy walked over to a station filled with other astronomers running back and forth, some rushing to get breakfast while some rushed to the observatory. Jungkook always loved the observatory, it gave him a close look to the stars and that was what he adored the most. Once Jungkook threw on his lab coat, he dropped onto a high leather stool and gawked at his work in silence. At times, it would get to him that he wouldn't find anything useful. Apparently, doubting was included if he wanted to succeed and that's what held his chin up. There would be many wrongs until he reaches the right.
The time flashed 10:53 AM and Jungkook looked down and picked up a pencil to tap it against the desk. His desk was filled with gadgets and gizmos; a three-monitor screen, a picture frame of him and his girlfriend during new years, an empty cup of coffee, notes on stars and cosmos, drawings of astronauts and even pencils and pens scattered around like nothing. Altogether, his workplace was a mess and quotes were taped on every little part of the desk. As the boy sat there in silence, debating if he should head over to the observatory to find something big, Jeon Jungkook wasted more seconds on sitting than doing anything.
Unexpectedly, a chair rolled in and bumped into his. This made Jungkook flinch and suddenly turn his head to see two colleagues of his making a big smile and holding a four-cup holder with brewed coffee for the morning.
“BEEP-BEEP! delivery for Galileo!” Said a man on the other's lap. This man holding the coffee in his hands was slightly tanned, tall, had a roughly low voice, full and round eyes hiding under the silver, circular glasses and a beige vest over his dark blue dress shirt. All this hid under a white lab coat and black slacks where he matched in classy shoes like anyone else. The man had light brown hair over his head, bangs that tented over his forehead and full-straight eyebrows. “Come on, Jungkook! Stop staring at us like that and take the coffee! My hand is on fire..” Claimed the older man.
“Taehyung, Namjoon, stop bumping into me while I work-”
“You're not even working…” Spoke out the man in a deep voice just holding Taehyung on his lap as he then tilted his head to look at Jungkook. This was Namjoon; another tall man with a loving smile that attracted others with his dimples as deep as moon craters, eyes like glazing chocolate caramel and hair thrown back to expose his natural tanned complexion. As his hair was dark brown with strands of light dyed highlights, his attire was a white dress shirt under the white lab coat. Matching in the attire of black slacks and black classic shoes.
“I was going to… But, bigger question; why are you sitting on Namjoon, Taehyung?” Jungkook asked and held back a smile that would soon shift into a laugh.
Taehyung reached for the two cups of coffee and handed one to Namjoon and carried one for himself before he suddenly leaned back. “We're getting married~”
“Ah! Tell him the truth already!” Namjoon laughed and couldn't even take a sip from his cup of coffee without having the younger over his lap lean back and laugh on purpose to get on the older man's nerves. “Kim Taehyung! Y-You almost spilled my coffee!”
“Truth is, our big brother Kim Namjoon has highlights in his hair and he doesn't want out supervisor to see it! So, I took it upon myself to sit down on his lap like this, and travel with him everywhere! We're both very intelligent, so us together we'll be unstoppable! Let's conquer the universe!”
“What about me?” Jungkook asked with a chuckle and snatched Taehyung's glasses to wear them and push his rolling chair back so Taehyung couldn't reach him. “I'm smart too and I also want to conquer the universe.”
“No, you have a girlfriend. Besides, you don't have the same family name as ours!” Taehyung continued and this made Jungkook start to laugh as he then took off the glasses and pointed to Namjoon.
“But Namjoon has a wife!” Jungkook complained as he couldn't stop laughing. “Ah, fine… Whatever. Once I find the next big thing, you'll want to join my group.” Jungkook gloated as his friends laughed at how easy it was to overpower the man. “Thank you for the coffee, I need to check the radar.” Jungkook said and accessed the earth's private radar after to gaze at it.
"Taehyung, get off… Please.” Namjoon complained. “I'd like to drink some coffee.”
“Shouldn't have dyed your hair. ONWARDS! I need to take a look back at the Andromeda Galaxy.” Taehyung stated and Namjoon smirked before clearing his throat.
“Quick! How far is the earth from the Andromeda?!”
“780 kiloparsecs and 2.5 million light-years away. That one was tough… I remember memorizing some facts of the Andromeda Galaxy in order to study it. Ask me another one about that next time, Namjoon!” Taehyung insisted with a laugh as they rolled back to their station on the office chair together. Those two alone were Jungkook's close friends. However, they seemed more closer together and Jungkook just thought it was because their family names were alike. Let alone, Taehyung and Namjoon were really intelligent, so they were able to work together like always, while Jungkook chose to work alone.
He was selfish at times to work alone in hopes of finding something big under his name and nothing else. As Jungkook rolled his chair into the desk once more, he gawked at the earth's radar and kept staring in silence. He would always do the same, watch the radar for anything new. Yet, the more he waited, the more upset he'd get. “Ah… I might as well join them at the observatory and hope to find something there.” Jungkook whispered to himself, close to a bicker. As Jungkook stood up, he adjusted the collar of his lab coat and tried not to feel like a failure once again. He just couldn't wait to get home and complain to his girlfriend on the phone about how much he failed at finding something new. While other astronomers calculated other galaxies distance from the Milky Way, Jungkook sat staring at the radar like he had no idea what to do now.
“I'm starting to hate-” Jungkook was then interrupted as the earth's radar started to pick up a red light and beeped at the sighting. This made Jungkook tilt his head and lean in to gawk at it even further. The only time this color would cut on is when the rocket outside is out there on the moon. However, Jungkook turned his head to see that the rocket outside was still on it's launch pad. At this moment, Jungkook rose his eyebrows in surprise as the label popped up to point at the red light flashing on the radar. It was like the system recognized the machine and coded it as ‘Rocket-B248-C12’.
“Rocket…B248..? How…the fuck?” Jungkook cursed into a whisper and observed once more at the blinking light. Showing that this rocket belonged to the facility Jungkook worked in. With such a find, Jungkook sprung up from his seat and slammed his hand on a red button to show that there was an emergency on the radar. Little did he know, how special this red light would be to his own life. His own private little universe.
