"I can't believe it," Marnie said. "The portal's closed."
"We're going to have to wait for an entire year," Maisie said, horrified. Who knows what would happen in the mortal world after Kal casted his spell.
"I suppose it would give us both time to train you both, as we planned to do," Aggie suggested. "And then, when the portal opens, we'll be ready to fight Kal."
"Just wait for a year of mortal time?" asked Marnie, sounding like she was going to cry.
"The mortal world would be in chaos by then," Maisie said. All because of some power-hungry kid.
What happened to the people that didn't dress up for Halloween and stayed home? Would humans ban together and end up killing the creatures that once was their loved ones because they didn't understand?
"It's gonna feel like a century here," Marnie continued.
"Whatever," replied Luke, sitting down.
"No," replied Marnie. "Not whatever." She was on the verge of crying, "It's all my fault. It's all my fault Mom's turned into this horrible creature."
"It's not your fault," Maisie told Marnie. "I would've done the same thing over some guy paying attention to me for once."
"There's gotta be something we can do," Marnie said.
"Marnie, I love them too, but I can't change the rules," Aggie said.
"What if we can?" asked Maisie. "We just gotta find the fire exit to the rules."
Marnie went to Aggie to take something from her. Aggie asked, "What – what are you doing?"
Marnie took the head phone, "Calling Sophie." She spoke into the head phone, "Sophie? Soph, are you there?"
The wait was painful, but Sophie did reply, "Marnie is that you?"
Marnie spoke into the head phone, "Sophie, listen to me. We're going to open the portal."
"We can't," Sophie replied. "It's after midnight."
"I don't care," Marnie said. "That's not gonna stop me." She paused and explained, "The portal hasn't always been there. It was created by magic and nobody's magic is stronger than ours, right?"
"I guess so," Sophie said.
"No, no," Marnie said. "You've got to believe it. And Dylan has to, too. Come on. What do you say?"
"Okay," Sophie said. "But how do we do it? There's no spell for this."
"We'll make up our own," Maisie said.
"Are you ready?" asked Marnie.
Marnie set the head phone down and took Maisie's hand.
Maisie looked at Luke and held her hand out, "Come on."
"I'm no warlock," Luke replied.
"I just need somebody who believes that anything is possible," Maisie told him.
"Do you believe that?" asked Marnie.
"If you're there, yeah," replied Luke, replied taking Maisie's hand and standing up.
Marnie looked at Aggie, "Grandma?"
Aggie took Marnie's hand, "I'm not sure how this'll work out, but I've always believed in you two."
"We call on the dreams of creature and mortal, to heal the wound that worlds divide. From now on, we each can create a portal, and each of us our own path divide," Marnie and Maisie said in unison.
They repeated the spell one more time and something happened.
It looked like the portal was opening.
They repeated the spell one more time.
And the portal was created and the doors opened.
Marnie and Maisie stepped through the portal, seeing shocked and curious faces. Even Kimberly seemed confused by the sight of the portal.
"Yes!" cheered Marnie as they walked down the steps.
"Marnie! Maisie!" yelled Sophie excited as her two older sisters ran down the steps to hug Sophie.
Aggie and Luke followed not too far behind.
"No." Luke said, "It's impossible!"
"Good job," Marnie told Sophie and Dylan.
"That's him," Sophie said, looking at Kal.
Kal came over to them. Dylan put his hands on Sophie's shoulders in a protective gesture.
Marnie went up to Kal, because it had to be her and Kal.
Kal shouted, "I don't care how strong you think you are, but you could never beat me!"
Maisie was sure that she was stronger than Kal at magic, because she did the impossible and opened up the portal.
But Kal had many years of magic training ahead of them.
"Your only power was the power to keep us apart, Kal," Marnie told him. "And now you don't have that power anymore." Kal seemed to breath heavily at that. "We don't have to hate each other." She took a step forward, "Just give me back Aggie's spell books."
"Dad was right," Kal said. "You're the enemy and you will always be."
"You told me you make your own decisions," Marnie said. "Don't let your father's hate decide for you now."
"Go ahead," Kal held up his hands, palms up, to show Marnie two small spell books, which was magically enlarged. Black tendrils covered the spell books. "Take the books. I'd like to watch."
Maisie was pretty sure that if Marnie tried, something awful would happen to her.
"Is good stronger than evil? Let's find out," Kal said.
Marnie said, "I'm not afraid of you. I may feel sorry for you, and I'd like to help you, but I'm not afraid of you." She seemed to glow as she stepped forward to grab the spell books.
"Marnie, please be careful," Maisie said.
Marnie reached for the spell books and electricity sparked as Marnie tried to grab the spell books.
The humans turned creatures seemed to be watching, as if wondering what was going to happen.
Marnie finally took the spell books and stumbled backwards. Maisie grabbed a hold of Marnie, "Are you okay?"
Kal seemed to scream as he was magically spun around and then disappeared into a ball of light, which faded.
"He'll be back," Luke stated.
"And we'll be waiting," Marnie said.
"And we'll be prepared for it," Maisie added.
Marnie looked at Aggie, "Grandma, will you do the honors?"
Aggie took the spell books, "Of course dear." She put on some glasses and opened the spell book, so she can read the spell backwards.
The spell wore off and Kimberly looked at Maisie, almost confused, "Was that all a dream? It was so crazy. Why do I suddenly want to become a chef?"
Maisie smiled at her best friend. "Girl, don't I have a story for you."
The principal said, "Well, uh, I don't know who put all this together, but let's have a big hand for the best Halloween party ever, huh?"
The partygoers applauded and music kicked on so the dance can continue.
Gwen came over, but she threw her mask to the ground. Marnie and Maisie ran over to hug Gwen.
"I'm really glad you're okay," Maisie said.
"I don't know if I'll ever stop you guys from fighting, but at least you won't have to fight over me and Mai anymore," Marnie said. "I know you both have things to teach us and now I don't want to choose."
"I'm not sure what I'm going to teach you," Aggie said. "It seems Marnie and Maisie already know more than I do."
"Don't sell yourself short, Grandma," Maisie told Aggie. "We need to get back to Halloweentown to get rid of the gray spell."
"Quite right," Aggie said. She looked at Gwen, "You coming?"
"I don't think so, Mom," Gwen replied. "This is my world. But I guess the kids can come and visit you anytime they want now that they've figured out their way around the rules."
Maisie laughed.
"Then you can expect me for dinner, next Halloween," Aggie told Gwen. "You be good, sweetheart."
"Oh, you too, Mom," Gwen replied. She kissed Marnie and Maisie on the cheek, "Bye."
Marnie went up to Luke, "All right, come on, let's get you out of here before someone gives you a prize for best mask."
"You think?" asked Luke.
"And what's wrong with that?" asked Maisie.
They went to the portal and split up, so they can undo the gray spell.
It didn't take very long for it to be undone, and Aggie finished it all off by turning the cube back into the jack o' lantern.
At least, everything seemed to go back to normal.
For now.
