After the slowest ride to Aggie's house, they (Marnie, Maisie, Aggie, and Luke) finally got there.
"Wow," Marnie said. "Turning gray sure has made you a careful driver, Benny."
Benny turned around in his seat to look at them, "Have we met?"
"Ohh, well, yeah," started Marnie.
"The last time we met, you were just a skeleton," Maisie told Benny. She had to sit in the front seat with Benny.
Benny looked kind of horrified and confused.
"Well, thank you for the ride, dear," Aggie told him. "We're in something of a hurry." They got out of the cab while Benny looked at his hand horrified.
They went up to the gate, and Aggie spoke as she opened up the gate, "Come on, let's get inside."
They walked up to the house and Marnie asked, "What do you think Cal's going to do to the mortal world?"
"I don't know, but I know it's not good," Maisie said.
Aggie explained, "Well, he clearly shares his father's hatred of humans, but if he's willing to break the code of Merlin, which forbids stealing the spells of another then I think that we can safely assume that he's capable of anything." She lowered her voice, "Now no more talk until we're inside. And even if he's still eavesdropping, he won't be able to hear us in my house."
They walked up to the door, and Aggie opened it, she whispered, "I hope the gray spell hasn't changed any—"
Maisie was confused on why Aggie stopped and gasped.
"Anything," finished Aggie.
When they got inside, Maisie finally understood why. The furniture was gray and boring, compared to what it had been a couple of years ago.
"I like what you done with the place," Luke told Aggie, nodding his approval.
"I can't believe that Kal did this with a spell out of your book," Marnie said. "We'll never undo it!"
"Don't talk like that," Maisie told Marnie. "We'll find a way to undo this spell."
"I agree with Mai, dear," Aggie told Marnie. "We're only doomed if there was only one copy of my spell book." She chuckled, "What he doesn't know is there are two."
Maisie grinned at the cleverness of having two spell books.
"Two?" asked Marnie, surprised.
"They're matched sets," Aggie explained, "Two complete copies."
Maisie grinned, "Way to go, Grandma."
Aggie smiled, "I took the one I usually use to the mortal world with me and the other one is still here." She put a finger to her cheek. "Someplace."
"I'll start looking," Maisie stated.
"Let's," Aggie agreed.
They started looking around the house. They looked through the couch, in cupboards, drawers, until finally it seemed like they looked through the whole house but still nothing, until they ended up in the dining room, with large books, but it wasn't the copy.
Aggie sat down at the table, "We can't find it."
"Grandma, we can't just give up," Marnie said.
Maisie messed with her hair, "We gotta think of something. We can't just give up."
"There's something we're not thinking of," Marnie added. "I mean, something to get us out of this trap, a spell, or..."
There was a weird whooshing sound that made Marnie pause in what she was saying.
Maisie glanced around, and spotted Luke, back to his goblin self. She felt a sense of relief over seeing him.
"Luke!" said Marnie, also happy.
"Yeah," Luke said, touching his ear. Maisie couldn't help but run over to hug Luke, because she was glad to see him looking like a goblin again. Luke seemed surprised by the hug, but he did give her a one-armed hug back, before they broke the hug.
"Look! You're a goblin again!" Marnie said, going over to Luke and Maisie. "Something broke the spell."
"I guess so," Luke said going away from the banister.
"Well, what happened, Grandma?" Marnie asked, "Did you say something?"
Aggie had gotten up from the table and headed towards Luke, "Not that I'm aware of."
"Then how come I'm not gray anymore?" asked Luke.
"Maybe the spell's temporary?" asked Maisie, but to her, that didn't make any sense.
"Then maybe the spell on the house will wear off and then we can find your spell book," Marnie suggested.
"That could take too long," Maisie said.
"I agree," Aggie said. "Midnight will pass and the mortal world..."
"Grandma, you already said the spell book isn't here," Marnie pointed out. "What else can we do?"
"Well, I haven't seen that other spell book for decades," Aggie said. She looked like she had an idea, because she put her finger to her cheek, "Perhaps it's lost." She was smiling.
"Grandma, the spell book is lost. You shouldn't be smiling over that," Maisie said.
"Yeah, it's terrible," Marnie agreed.
Aggie clapped, "No, no, dear, not at all, because you see, if it's lost, I just know where it is."
"Can you repeat that? Because I'm confused," Maisie said.
"Everything that's lost in both worlds always end up at Gort's house," Aggie explained. "He's the junk man of the universe."
After another slow taxi ride and hiking for a while, they finally got up to Gort's house. Marnie and Aggie both seemed out of breath from the walk.
Maisie, however, had her soccer conditioning to thank for not being out of shape.
"Where'd all the junk go?" asked Luke.
"Looks like the gray spell hit here too," Maisie pointed out.
"Oh, you'd still better prepare yourself, my dear," Aggie told Maisie. "Spell or no spell, Gort the Rancorous is still the foulest, meanest, smelliest inhabitant of Halloweentown."
They walked up to the house and Aggie knocked on the door.
Gort, wearing a suit, opened the door, "Yes?" He stepped outside.
"Hello, Gort," Aggie greeted. "You're looking...clean."
"Um, do you need something?" asked Gort. "I'm busy, you see, sorting my socks."
"Um, yes, Mr. Gort, uh, sir," Marnie started.
"We were just looking for a book and we thought that you might've ended up with it," Maisie said.
"Oh, I see," Gort replied. "Well, come right in. I have several books." He looked at them, "Yes." He stepped inside his house.
They looked at each other and shrugged, before following him inside. Gort made a 'welcome' gesture at his house, which was very large and a lot cleaner than what Maisie expected.
Gort led them to the books and said, "Well, here they are."
Maisie looked at the book titles: Collecting Lint, Advanced Bottle Washing, Garbage Containers Through the Years, Body Odor 101, History of Eyebrow Styles, Adventures in Macrame, Laundry Folding, Personal Hygiene for Dummies, Dusting for Fun & Profit, Proper Toenail Cutting, and 100 Recipes for Tapioca.
"Oh, thank you Gort," Aggie told Gort. Gort walked away to go fold socks and Aggie took down some books, "Proper Toenail Cutting?"
Aggie showed Marnie a book and Marnie said, "Dusting for Fun & Profit?"
"100 Recipes for Tapioca," Luke read, nodding his head. "You know, I don't think whoever lost these is missing them much."
Maisie grabbed a book, "My personal favorite is Garbage Containers Through the Years." She grabbed another book, "My second favorite is History of Eyebrow Styles."
"Gort, these can't possibly be all the books you got," Aggie said to Gort.
"Well, I sold the rest at the, uh, the yard sale," Gort told them.
In disbelief, Maisie asked, "There was a yard sale?"
"Oh, yes," Gort replied. "This – this place was very messy. I only kept the useful books." He looked at his socks, "I'll sell these socks, too, as soon as I match them up."
They went over to Gort, Marnie and Maisie setting the books down, although a part of Maisie wanted to keep her two favorite books, and maybe even the tapioca book too. She wished she brought a backpack with her.
"Gort," Aggie spoke as she sat down on the stool opposite Gort. "There was a particular book. An extra copy of my spell book. Do you remember who you sold it to?"
Gort leaned forward, causing Maisie, Marnie, and Aggie to lean forward too. It was a moment of silence until Gort held up two socks, "Do you think that these two match?" He looked at the socks, "No, I suppose not."
Maisie felt frustrated, because everything was going down the drain and it was all Kal's fault. Maisie wanted to punch something, like Kal's stupid, smug face. Or kick a soccer ball at it. Repeatedly.
Aggie got up and ushered them forward to leave. Aggie looked back at Gort, "Well, we've hit a dead end." They stopped and Aggie said, "You know, that book could be anywhere."
"Okay," Marnie said. "I say we head back to the mortal world." She went up the steps.
Aggie's hands flashed and Maisie was confused, until Aggie looked at her hands. Her hands were turning gray, and Maisie felt her heart sink.
"The spell!" Luke said, "It's coming back."
"Oh, no," Maisie said. "The gray spell is coming after us since we're in Halloweentown."
"And it's going to come after you two," Aggie said to Maisie and Marnie.
"We've gotta get out of here," Luke said and went up the stairs to the door. It sounded like he tried the door. "The door. It won't open."
