"Okay, I say we head back to the mortal world," Marnie's voice said.
"The spell! It's coming back!" Luke's past-self exclaimed.
They looked over to see them surrounding Aggie as her hands turned gray.
"Oh, no," Maisie's past-self said. "The gray spell is coming after us since we're in Halloweentown."
"And it's going to come after you two," Aggie's past-self said to Maisie and Marnie.
Marnie went up to Maisie and looked at her.
"This is only five minutes ago," Luke pointed out.
"Mai must not have said it right," Marnie said.
"You probably wouldn't have said it right either," Maisie replied. "I don't speak Welsh."
Marnie took the spell from Maisie and read it. There was a flash of light and then the next thing they knew, they were stumbling right into some grass.
A caveman grunted and Marnie looked at the man and screamed a little.
"Okay, I overshot just a little bit," Marnie defended herself.
"You think?" asked Maisie. She grabbed the paper and read the spell.
They were picked back up and Marnie screamed, before they were forward in time.
They were back in Gort's house, but Luke wasn't with them this time, and neither was Aggie.
"Luke?" asked Marnie. "Grandma?"
"Nice job escaping my spell," Kal said, coming up to them. "You two have real potential."
Maisie wanted no part of this.
"Where's Luke and Grandma?" asked Marnie. She was feeling scared, "And what time is it?"
"They're...well, I guess you could say I took 'em offline for the moment," Kal explained.
Maisie found herself thinking that this kid should not have this much power.
"It's a simple limbo spell. I could teach it to you two later," Kal said.
Maisie wondered why Kal was including her. Maybe he assumed that since Marnie and Maisie were twins, they would do everything together. Or maybe he assumed that if he buttered up to Maisie, Marnie would like him better.
"You better stop breaking in on my and Maisie's spells, Kal," Marnie warned. "It's against the code of Merlin."
Kal scoffed, "Nobody cares about the code of Merlin anymore, Marnie. You need an update," Kal said. "And besides, what do you wanna hang around a bunch of moldy old creatures for anyway?"
"These creatures are our friends," Marnie said.
"Your mom's about to become a really moldy old creature," Kal said.
"Leave my mother alone," Marnie said.
"Oh, yeah, that reminds me," Kal said. "Bye." He waved his fingers at them and vanished.
"That guy is really getting on my nerves," Maisie said. "I just want to strangle him." She grabbed the paper from Marnie to read the spell.
This time, they both appeared in the right place at the right time.
"Luke?" called Marnie.
"No time, just start looking around to find Grandma's spell book," Maisie said, going to look through the assorted junk.
"Luke?" called Marnie, not caring, "Luke, where...?"
"You know I think I like this place better when it was gray," Luke stated.
"Where is Gort?" asked Marnie. "It's almost eleven o'clock in the mortal world. We've got to find him."
A door closed and a foul smell hit Maisie's nose, making her cover her nose.
"Oh, yeah," Luke said. "I think you found him."
"What are you doing in my house?" yelled Gort.
"Aggie sent us," Maisie yelled.
Gort walked down the steps and stopped at the bottom, "Well, that doesn't make you welcome here. I hate Aggie!"
Maisie was thrown by statement.
"Don't feel bad," Luke told her. "He hates everyone."
"Um," Marnie started, "Well, Aggie has the greatest respect for you."
Gort seemed confused as he stepped forward, "She does?"
"Yeah," Marnie continued.
"I remember her saying that you were the smelliest, foulest, meanest inhabitant in all of Halloweentown," Maisie added, remembering those words.
"Maisie, ixnay," Luke warned.
Maisie elbowed him, because she knew that Gort would find it a compliment.
"She said that?" asked Gort.
Maisie nodded, "She really did."
Gort groaned, "She's just trying to butter me up."
"No, no, no," Marnie added. "She meant it. Really."
"Well, that's very sweet of her," Gort said. "And I hate it when people are sweet!" He pointed, "Now get out! I have messing up to do."
Luke stepped forward to leave, but Marnie pushed him back and whispered, "Wait, wait." She spoke to Gort, "No. No, but there's something that we need."
"Oh," replied Gort, "Well in that case, take a number. I'm now serving nobody!"
They stepped backwards.
Marnie started, "Uh, but—"
Gort pointed at them, "You two little girls stink like a Cromwell and I want you both out of my cottage." They headed to the stairs while Gort growled at them.
"You know," Maisie turned to look at Gort, "I like seeing your place when it's very messy. It's cozy unlike when it's clean."
She got up a step when she heard Gort say, "Wait. What do you mean by 'unlike when it's clean.'"
"There's this thing called the gray spell, you see, and in a few years, Calabar's son is gonna make your whole house neat," Marnie explained.
Maisie almost winced, because Kal said that Calabar didn't want people to know that Kal existed. Gort would probably think that Marnie's lying.
Instead, Maisie was surprised when Gort yelled "What!"
