Girl Meets Rules.
Emily's POV
I was walking with Mr. Matthews to class. He was asking how I liked living with Maya and Katy.
We walk into the class and the whole class was going crazy.
"When did you guys decide there are no rules in here?" Cory ass his class and they all quiet down and sit. "When did my generosity in allowing you express yourselves make you think you could turn my class into a zoo?"
"I'm sorry." Riley and Maya say, sitting down.
Farkle blows ping pong out of his mouth. "I'm sorry." I look at him with a weird amused look.
"I'm sorry." The class says.
"Lucas. Why are you the only one here that didn't say I'm sorry?" Cory asks him.
"Because I never do anything." Lucas replies.
"No. Because you respect the rules. Because you know without them, civilization becomes chaos. The rest of you are gonna spend the afternoon thinking about that, with the exception of Lucas the good." Cory says.
"Oh, boy! Is that gonna stick?" He asks. Oh yeah.
"We're already making t-shirts." Maya says with a smile, gesturing to her and I.
Lucas walks up to Cory. "You put me in a real bad position here, sir." He turns around then looks at Cory. "I gotta do something."
"You can fight this, Lucas." Cory says.
"No, I can't, sir. Everyone's looking." Lucas tells him.
"Okay. Do what gotta do what you gotta do." Cory tells Lucas the good.
Lucas texts Cory then Cory reads it. "Detention." I grab Cory's phone and read the text. I look back at Lucas with a small smirk.
"I finally like you huckleberry." I say.
"Oh, thank you, sir, ma'am." He says to us. I go and sit down in front of Farkle.
"Feel better, Huckleberry?" Maya asks.
"I'm just like you now." He tells her.
"Yeah, we're exactly the same." Maya says.
"Yeah, you're all the same. Detention, all of you!" Cory says.
"What did I do?" I ask him.
"Where you really gonna leave?" He asks me.
I shrug. "No." I answer.
He nods as Riley raises her hand. "What do you want?"
"I'm going to be home late today, daddy." She says.
"I know, honey." He tells her.
Later that afternoon I walk into Matthews class. I go and sit at my desk.
"I've always allowed you to bend the rules. But the best of students know just how far they can push before those rules are broken. Today you are not the best of students." Cory says.
"But you know we're good people most of the time, don't you, daddy? Daddy? You're my daddy." Riley says.
"Why do we need rules at all?" Maya asks.
"You think you could make it in a world without rules?" He asks her.
"I think I could do fine in any world." She says.
"The rest of you believe that?" Cory asks, everyone nods. "Okay. School's out. You've got the whole place to yourselves. No rules. One hour to behave however you want. Let's see what becomes of you." He says.
"Well, I think we'll be perfectly behaved ladies and gentlemen." Riley says.
"No. Probably not." I say. Cory nods.
"And I think within one minute you'll be eating each other." Cory says walks towards door.
"Where are you going?" Riley asks her dad.
"I'm locking you in. The best punishment I can give is to force you to spend some time with yourselves. I'll see you in an hour. Whoever's left." He smiles and closes door and locks it.
"I can't believe it. He locked us in." Riley says.
"That's fine. I don't have a problem with that. I'm not claustrophobic or anything. We're trapped." Farkle says and starts gasping. "I can't breathe. There's more carbon dioxide than oxygen! The ratio is all wrong!"
"Farkle, calm down!" I exclaim.
"Okay, Farkle gotsa go." Maya says.
"I gotsa?" He asks.
"Stop. He doesn't have to go." I say. Riley stands up.
"This is exactly what my father wants. He wants us to panic and fall apart. We have to show him that we can get through this without turning into a pack of wild animals." She says.
"I'm hungry." Lucas says and looks at Farkle.
"What do you mean by that?" Farkle asks.
"Nothing." He stands. "I'm just really hungry." He stands behind Farkle.
"Because we're best friends."
"Yeah, you know what else? I don't think I've ever been this hungry." Lucas says.
"I feel ya, Ranger Rick." Maya says standing. "I'm kinda hungry, too."
"And it's not like a regular kind of hungry, right?" Zay asks.
"No, no. This one's deep. It must be attended to." She answers.
Riley walks over to Lucas, Zay and Maya. "Oh, guys, can we just show a little discipline? I mean, how much more time in here could we possibly have?" We all look at the clock, the clock changes to 2:01. She looks at Farkle. "You know I could eat, too."
Farkle stands up and backs away from Riley, Maya, and Lucas who walks towards him. "What? What are you looking at? Guys! What are you seeing right now?"
"Stop talking, chicken." Zay says.
"Guys!" I yell. "Stop."
"All right, come on! Let's prove my father wrong." Riley says and walks to the front of the class. "Let's form our own perfect society. Rileytown is a land of goodness and rainbows where everyone folds their hands nicely like so." She folds her hands. "Who wants to live in Rileytown?"
Oh no as much as I love Riley I don't want to go to Rileytown. Or Mayaville.
"Nobody wants to live in Riley-town! It's too lollipop!" Maya says.
"You're too lollipop!" Riley says.
"Sister, I'm a lot of things, but I ain't no lollipop." She tells Riley.
"Riley-town has order, structure and our hands folded like so!" Riley folds her hands. "What do you got?"
Maya stands on her desk. "I got Mayaville! No rules, no laws, no hand folding and nobody says no!" Farkle looks up at Maya. "No."
"You got chaos is what you got! I got order, you got chaos!" Riley says.
"You got lollipop, I got whoo!" Maya says.
"Okay, detention may be bringing out the worst in us, but at least we're making the time pass." Riley says and we all look at the clock. It was only 2:02.
"Eat Riley!" Maya says.
"Okay." Riley says and holds out a hand and covers her eyes. "But no biting."
The desk are moved and the students are in two different groups. Maya and her group is stacking the desks. I was sitting with Farkle. He didn't really want to choose a side either, so we made our own.
"Why are you guys over there? Why can't we just be one happy society that runs the way I think it should?" Riley asks Maya.
"Because you want us to be all you." Maya tells her.
"We're not all you, Riley. I mean, you know the only reason I've never been able to choose between you? Because if it was you all the time, life would be like, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la." Riley joins Farkle in the la la's. He walks over to Maya. "And if it was you all the time, life would be like he growls. "Descensus in cuniculi cavum!" Maya snarls. "And if it was just Emily, it would be a mix of you two. Which isn't so so bad."
"But who are you going to be with right now, Farkle?" Riley asks him.
"Before you answer that," Maya says and walks over to the back door. "You may want to consider a little thing I call this." She opens back door.
"He forgot to lock the back door?" Lucas asks.
"Yeah he forgot." I mutter.
"Maya, we're in detention. You can't leave." Riley says.
"Hey. School's out. He said we get the place to ourselves. He said to make our own rules. Rule number one: See you around, Suckers." Maya says and leaves with some of the other students.
"Farkle?" Riley asks him.
"Hey. What part of "descensus in cuniculi cavum" do you not understand?" He asks her.
"All of it." Riley answers.
He sighs. "I'm just going with Emily." He says. I smile.
"Lucas?"
"I never do anything, Riley." He leaves and screams. "Yeah." Zay follows him.
Farkle and I look at each other.
------------------------------------------------------------------
We were in the science classroom, our teacher left the door unlocked. Thank gosh.
So here were Farkle and I sitting on the floor, facing each other. We haven't really said anything but it was an awkward quiet. It was nice to be able to sit with some one and not always have to talk.
"How's living with Maya?" Farkle asks me after a few minutes.
"It's okay. Katy and her have been really nice." I answer. "It's weird though." I say.
"How?" He asks me.
"I'm so used to my dad coming home late and then-And it's just different." I say.
"Have you talked to him, or wrote him?" Farkle asked me.
"No. Not really." I answer. I look around the room. "I love science labs."
"Why?" He asks me, confused. I've never said anything like that.
"Because, science, in my opinion, is creating new things, like inventing but with cooler chemicals and stuff. You can make really cool things with it. And I like that." I say to him. He smiles at me.
"Me too." He says. I smile. I get up and walk over to our stuff from class today. We made little crystals.
I pick mine up, it was a small purple one. "Its pretty, isn't it?" I ask him.
"Yeah, it is." He says, looking at me. I smile and look down, putting the crystal back. "Have you ever told anyone you like science?" He asks me.
"No." I answer, shaking my head.
"Why not?" He asks me. I go back and sit down, leaning against a table, he sits down next to me.
"Because, you know, it's always been Riley, the good one, Maya, the bad one, then there's me, the one who is just like both of them. Half of each. And a part of me just wants to be me, and to be known as Emily, not just someone who is a mixture between the two." I explain to him. "But a part of me is scared to do that, like some thing will go wrong and it won't be the same ever again." I was playing with my hands as I spoke, not wanting to look at him. I didn't want him to look at me any different.
"I think that it's good you want to be your own person. And I don't know you because you're half of Maya and Riley. I know you because you're a whole Emily." He says to me. I look at him and smile.
We hung out in the science room, talking about school and detention and stuff. It was nice talking to him.
----------------------
We were now back in the classroom.
Cory enters. "Okay, guys. Detention over."
"Dad?" Riley asks.
"Yeah?" He asks Riley
"Remember how you told us that people change people?" She asks.
"Secret of life." He replies. I smirk.
"Well, when you're not with those people, how do you keep from changing back?" Maya asks.
"You went a little wild, did you?" He asks her.
"Whatever I got is strong in me, Matthews." She says.
"Yeah, me too, but the other way." Riley answers.
"Harley!" Cory says and Harley walks in.
"Right here." Harley says.
"You watched them?" Cory asks us.
"Like a hawk." Harley answer.
"What?" Riley asks.
"You're with him?" Maya asks.
"Yeah. He's my good kid." Harley says.
"What do you got?" He asks us.
"Everyone went nuts, except for Farkle and Emily, who left, but Zippy didn't. Why didn't you go nuts, Zippy?" Harley asks.
"I was without Maya. Without Maya, I don't think i'd ever unfold my hands." She says.
"What about this one here?" Cory points at Maya.
"Maya was the ringleader. Maya was the first one out the door." He answers.
"I was without Riley and Emily. Without Riley or Emily, I may never come back." Maya tells him.
"Okay. Well, detention over, guys. Everyone out." Cory says to everyone.
"Dad." Riley says.
"Everyone out." Cory says. Everyone stands up and leaves.
"So, you were like me? What changed you?" Maya asks Harley.
"Well, it turns out there is always two doors. He showed me the other one. It's good to know there's someone like that around." Harley says then leave.
Riley and me sit by the door, outside of the classroom while Maya was still in there. After a minute, Maya yelled. "Emily! Riley!"
"We're right here." I answer to her. She doesn't reply but I know she's probably relieved.
I lean against the door, just sitting there with Riley, waiting for the hour to pass by.
