Chapter 17: The Underestimated Girl

"Jack!"

Jack immidiately stopped flying after he saw Peter.

"She's underground."

Jack flew to an opening of the sewers, pausing. His breathing was heavy. His felt his eyes shift like if they were twitching.

Bree placed a hand on Jack's shoulder. "Are you okay?"

Jack nodded. "It's just that we have to go now." He jumped into the sewer.

Peter landed beside Bree and she took a step in front of Peter. "He's having some sort of panic attack. We need to stop him and help him."

Peter paused. "What if he calms down when he sees Mary. Would that help him?"

Bree shrugged. "It might. Either way something's wrong."

"We should hurry then." Peter jumped in.

"Peter!" Bree grabbed Peter's hand. "If something happens to Jack we should find help and then continue looking for Mary. Something tells me this entrance is bad."

Peter nodded. "But let's try this first. I promise you'll be fine, even if it fails." He pulled Bree into the sewer with him.

Their eyes rapidly looked around the sewer. Jack was calling out Mary's name. They didn't see Jack anywhere and began turning the first corners they saw. Bree paused every time, feeling something dark and hollow grow inside her.

Peter looked at Bree. "I feel that horrible feeling again."

Jack called out Mary's name again, but his voice was growing weaker and weaker.

"I think he's going to pass out!" Bree turned the corner and paused. She saw Jack on a ladder.

"Mary..." He began to fall back, but Bree caught him.

Peter flew to Bree's side. "Is he alright?"

Bree put her ear on Jack's chest. She listened closely, hearing his heart slowing. She looked up at Peter with wide eyes. "We have to get him out of here."

Peter nodded and took Jack from Bree, both of them flying out rapidly. Bree watched Jack's face as they flew to the Eiffel Tower. She noticed Jack's breaths were becoming normal, deep rhythms. Jack weakly opened his eyes and Bree smiled. "Don't worry."

Jack slowly sat up as Peter put him down on one of the tower's levels. Jack took a deep breath and looked out at the moon.

Peter rests a hand on Jack's shoulder. "Don't worry, Jack. We'll find another way to the earth's core, and then Pitch won't even think of touching Mary."

Jack smiled weakly. "Thanks, Peter." He looked back at the moon. He recalled how and why he became a guardian. He recalled what it meant. He took a deep breath and looked at Peter. "I'm going to talk to the moon about something." He flew up to the highest part of the tower and Tinkerbell followed him.

Bree stood beside Peter. "He's really worried about her."

Peter looked at Bree. "Uh-huh. I think he likes her."

Bree grinned, let out a small laugh. "Yeah." She sat down on the edge of the platform.

Peter smiled and sat next to Bree, looking out at Paris. He rested his head on Bree's shoulder. "I would be worried if it were you." His eyes moved to Bree's face. "Really worried."

Bree pulled out Peter's dagger. "I have this though."

Peter grinned and placed his hand on Bree's. "We have that."

Bree smiled. "That's what I meant."

Peter kissed Bree's cheek and moved closer to her. "I know. That's why we're here now. Together." He locked gazes with Bree. "And one day, we'll always be together in Neverland." His forehead touched hers and he slowly kissed Bree. He cupped Bree's head, lightly stroking her hair, as he kissed her again.

Bree wrapped her arms around Peter. Peter placed his other hand on the small of her back. He lightly kissed Bree's neck and blew on it, tickling it. Bree laughed as he continued.

"Stop it!" Bree laughed.

Peter grinned. "Okay." He laughed lightly, pulling away. He wrapped his arm around Bree's shoulder and looked out at Paris with her. "I'm glad I'll always be with you."

Bree paused. Her eyes shifted. "What about Jack and Mary?"

Peter raised a brow and looked at Bree. "What?"

"They won't always get to be together. Mary will grow older, unless she comes to Neverland with us." Bree paused again. "But Jack can't always be in Neverland."

Peter smiled. "Calm down."

Bree took a deep breath. "Sorry. I just, Mary's my best friend. It's true we haven't known each other for a long time, but I feel like we have. And she doesn't judge me by my beliefs. We've shared a lot of secrets with each other and I just... I just want her to be happy like I am with you."

Peter paused for moment. He smiled and pulled Bree closer to him. "If there's anything I learned from you, it's that there's always a way for things." He looked up at Jack. "I just hope Mary actually likes Jack. It's his first time liking someone."

Bree raised a brow. "First time liking someone?"

Peter nodded. "Or at least his first time showing interest in someone near eighteen."

Bree locked gazes with Peter. "I thought he's liked girls before."

"He has, but he said he's had no interest."

Bree raised a brow. "Tell me what you mean."

Peter shrugged. "It's a long story, longer than a bed time story."

Bree rested her head on Peter's lap and poked his nose lightly. "I'm prepared."

Peter grinned. "Jack and I met a long time ago. Back in the ... I forget when, but many, many years ago. We traveled the world at night because people could see me, so every day Jack and I would met at Big Ben. He would tell me about food he tasted and girls that were around his age. He told me that some of them were very pretty, but that they would complain about the cold a lot and said they would have fun at the mall, or shopping.

"Jack soon stopped going around girls his age altogether. This one time he thought that a girl really could see him. He followed her and talked to her. It didn't take long before he realized she could see him. But she was more interested in a human boy. Jack was confused and asked why she believed in him. She told him that she believed in Norse Mythology and a few fairy tales, but that didn't mean she liked him. Jack told me he was glad that he didn't have any interest in her.

"Jack didn't go around girls his age for a while. Eventually, when he did, he would pull pranks on them or find a way to comfort them if they were hurt. But none of them could see him. He told me that he believed the girl that was for him would believe in him AND like him. She would believe because she was a believer and like him for who he was, a mischievious boy with a good heart."  Peter let out a quiet sigh. "I guess a lack of interest and concern is the answer." He tilted his head. "Or maybe something else."

Peter blinked and looked down at Bree. Her eyes were closed and she nestled against Peter.

Peter smiled and lighty stroked Bree's hair. "I'm glad Jack found her and was interested though. She led me to you, a beautiful gem."

Jack and Tink slowly descended in front of Peter. His gaze was hard. "We can reach the earth's core from London, and it's much faster."

Mary punched the air multiple times, trying to free herself from the chains that bound her. Her breath was heavy now and her muscles were now sore.

Pitch's laugh echoed as he stepped towards her. "I've already told you that you can't do that. It's worthless."

Mary rolled her eyes. "I know you already told me." She sighed. "It just helps me think of a way out."

Pitch blinked. "You're not confident Jack will save you?"

"I am. I just don't want to be the person that always needs saving. I don't want to be a burden to anyone." Mary sat on the floor.

Pitch chuckled lightly. "Too bad that you are a burden."

Mary looked up with wide eyes. "What?"

Pitch grinned. "Haven't you figured it out? This is a trap that Jack will never return from."

Mary's mouth was now agape. She shook her head slowly, then confidently. "You won't kill Jack."

Pitch let out a small laugh. "I know Jack's coming from a different entrance, not the one I suggested. Don't worry, I gave him that much credit."

Mary smiled. "Bree wouldn't fall for that, especially Bree. She'll have a plan to avoid your trap because she already knows it's a trap."

Pitch smirked. "Now how did you know that Bree was with Jack?"

Mary locked gazes with Pitch. "Because she's a lot smarter than anyone knows, and she's my best friend. I'd do the same for her."

Pitch took a step back and grinned. "Then I'm afraid your best friend and Jack are getting the biggest surprise of all."

Mary's eyes narrowed. "Your little scheme won't prevail."

"Oh, I think it will." Pitch placed his hands behind his back. "You see, Jack and Peter are extrordinary boys. Jack is a guardian, and Peter is a resident of Neverland. A place I'll never grow up."

Mary paused. "You plan to use Peter to go to Neverland."

Pitch let out a loud laugh. "You are smart. The wonderful thing is, I don't even need Peter. I just need his little fairy."

Mary stood up. "You won't win. Not even in the slightest way."

Pitch smiled. "On the contrary," he lifted Mary's chin, "I think I will."

Bree, Jack, Peter, and Tink flew to London, rapidly looking for a way into its deepest sewer.

Bree paused as she lifted the lid to the sewer. She looked at Jack, making him stop and look at her. "How are you feeling?"

Jack paused and his eyes shifted. "My breathing's fine, but my heart is racing." He locked his gaze with Bree's. "Is this going to work?"

Bree smiled. "As long as you follow the plan and change its details only when necessary."
