3: Icy Thin Path

The weekend had arrived, promising two days of excitement and leisure.

But for Jane, it felt like just another day. The same routine. The same weekend.

And the same David.

She glanced at the clock, noting that he hadn't left his room since breakfast, burying himself in work and leaving her to wander in their vast house.

Eric's words echoed in her mind. It's time for her to take action.

Jane climbed the stairs and made her way to his home office. David was engrossed in paperwork and floor plans.

"Baby, are you busy?" she asked, her voice polite and soft. He merely hummed, not bothering to look at her. Undeterred, she walked over and hugged him from behind, planting a gentle kiss on his head.

"You're distracting me, Jane..."

"Let's have lunch together. Everything is ready," she suggested.

"I need to finish this first. I can't leave it," he replied dismissively.

"But... we hardly ever have lunch together... I thought we could spend some time today... besides..."

"Which part don't you understand, Jane? I told you I'm busy right now!" Jane took a step back, hurt by his harsh tone.

"There's no need to yell at me, Dave. I'm not a child..."

"Well, that's good to know. Maybe it'll help you grasp things better..." Jane tried her best to contain her emotions.

"What's wrong with you, Dave? You've been distant lately. Did I do something to upset you?" Jane mustered up the courage to confront him.

"Jane, I don't have time for this, okay? I'm busy. Just leave me alone," he retorted, his eyes still fixed on the floor plan.

"Dave, you've changed so much. If something is bothering you, please tell me. You know you can rely on me, right? We should sit down and talk if there are any issues. Don't let them fester," David set his pen down and glared at her, his expression filled with frustration and resentment.

"My issue right now is you, constantly disturbing me while I'm trying to work. So, please, just leave before I lose my temper!" David's voice was filled with frustration and annoyance.

"You could have just told me nicely. There's no need to yell," Jane replied, her voice trembling as tears welled up in her eyes. David was no longer the person she knew. He had changed so much, and it hurt.

"I've tried to approach it calmly before, but you keep picking fights and complaining about every little thing. Don't you realize how clingy you've become? Stop with this nonsense. I'm stressed enough as it is, and I don't have time for your childish behavior!" David's words stung, hitting Jane like a harsh slap.

Was it wrong to want to spend time with the person you love and miss dearly? Was it truly childish to crave a little attention? Thoughts raced through Jane's mind as she looked at him, his indifference hurting her deeply.

She couldn't comprehend what she had done wrong.

There was no point in arguing further. There was no reason to stay in this house any longer. With a heavy heart, Jane left the room, grabbed her keys, and stormed out of the house, leaving behind the man who needed his peace of mind.

The beach appeared serene, despite the bustling crowd of visitors. A group of surfers lingered nearby, taking advantage of the favorable conditions for riding the waves.

Sitting on the trunk of her car, Jane observed the tranquil scenery before her. With a casual swipe, she wiped away the tears that had formed, immersing herself in the gentle caress of the wind and the invigorating sea air.

The temperature was pleasantly balanced, not too hot nor too cold, making it an ideal day for a picnic or leisurely hangout. This spot held significant memories for Jane and David, their go-to location for cherished picnic dates.

"Honey..." she hummed absentmindedly, engrossed in the book she was reading. David pouted, casting her a pleading look with his puppy dog eyes.

"Honey~~"

"What?"

"I'm feeling hot! Let's go for a swim.."

"Go ahead, darling. I'm quite busy..."

"You're so mean!" Jane giggled as she watched David sulking. Unable to resist, she closed her book.

"Baby~" she cooed, gently turning his face towards her. He continued to pout, upset that Jane hadn't been giving him attention.

"Let's go swimming, alright?" David giggled and nodded his head. Jane stood up, slipping off her oversized t-shirt to reveal her lovely two-piece bikini.

"What are you doing? Put that back on!" David hastily grabbed the t-shirt, shielding her body while glancing around.

"What's the matter?"

"Don't show off your body like that! I don't like when others stare at you! Your body is only for me to admire!" He hugged her tightly, using his own body to cover hers.

"But how can I swim with this big tee on?" Jane frowned, looking at David who was still conscious of their surroundings.

"Just wear it and swim..."

"Baby, it'll be uncomfortable!"

"Nope, I won't allow it!"

"Fine, if you insist on this, no more picnics after today!" Jane crossed her arms over her chest.

"I don't mind at all. We can have a picnic at my place. The pool is ready for us. We can even skinny dip..."

"Naughty baby!" Jane playfully smacked his forearm. David chuckled, wiggling his eyebrows.

"Well, it would be a shame to let this bikini go to waste, don't you think? How about we head to my place right now?" he leaned closer to her, smirking mischievously.

"Nope!" she teased him.

"I just can't take no for an answer!" With that, he hoisted her onto his shoulder and headed towards his car, while she laughed heartily and squealed with joy.

There's no point in dwelling on the past anymore. It only brings her more pain. Things will never be the same again. They are like strangers now, rather than a couple. Everything has changed.

"Well... well... well... didn't expect to see you here, Miss Editor!" She turned around to face him. He stood there, wearing shorts and no shirt, carrying a large surfboard.

He's the last person she wanted to encounter today!

"Mr. Black... I didn't know you were into surfing!" She quickly wiped away her tears and composed herself, not wanting him to realize she had been crying.

"You know nothing about me. Maybe you should do some research, just to make things easier in the future," he remarked.

"I've read your profile. That's enough for me," Jane replied. She hopped down from the car's trunk, and Yura instinctively reached out to steady her, placing his hand on her waist. She promptly pushed him away, not wanting to give him any advantage.

"Thanks..."

"So, are you leaving already?" he asked, leaning closer to her, but she managed to evade his proximity.

"Yes. I have something to attend to at home. Oh, please have your manuscript ready! I'll come to collect it next week," Jane reminded him gently.

"Come to my place. I'll have the manuscript ready," he offered, sweeping his hair back. Jane couldn't help but think that if she were a young and innocent teenager, she might have fallen for that troublesome man. But she wasn't a teenager anymore, and she certainly wasn't naive. So, she declined.

Yura watched as the car drove away. There was a flicker of hope in his heart. He had done his homework, especially when it came to this particular editor. And from the very first day, he couldn't help but fall for her.
