Chapter 28

Percy’s POV

It was like in slow motion.

I could feel myself breathing heavily as I look down at the dark stain spreading from where the sword penetrated.

And slowly, I fall to the ground, face first, unable to hold myself upright any longer.

Howls fill the night. The mutt snarls, waiting for me to join them.

I feel someone pull me onto my side, calling my name.

It takes a whole lot of effort for me to focus.

“ Percy,” I could hear someone call me. “ Stay with me, Percy. You are not going to die on me!” they say, sounding extremely fierce. “ Do you hear that? You are not going to die on me! Do you hear me?” they demand.

“ Perfectly….clear,” I wheeze. The person’s face swims into focus, her face white under tangled black hair.

Tears roll down her face silently, her lips pressed together so tight I thought they might disappear. “ Don’t leave me,” she whispers, pushing my hair out of my face.

“ I’m…not,” I say, shuddering slightly from the pain. “ I’m…I’m right here, aren’t I?” A small smile forms on her lips and the warm tears fall onto my face. “ Don’t….don’t cry,” I say, trying to wipe the tears away. Alas, my hands now fail me. I am completely paralyzed right now. This sucks.

“ I’m not crying,” she sniffles, wiping the tears away. “ I just got something in my eyes. That’s all. I’m not crying at all,” she adds, blinking furiously, trying to stop the tears from falling.

“ You’ve got many things in your eyes, then,” I say, grinning slightly. “ Those tears…aren’t stopping.” She laughs, wiping at the tears again. “ You do know the truth, right?”

“ What? That you’re going to make it out of this place and then you can resume to annoying the crap out of me?” she asks, her tone joking although the humor didn’t exactly reach her eyes. “ Yeah. I’ve accepted that a long time ago.”

“ That’s good, then. I’ve…I’ve always been annoying, huh?”

Extremely annoying,” she agrees. I smile at that, although it may look more like a grimace with all the pain I’m in right now.

“ I won’t make it.”

“ I know.”

“ Then why are you deluding yourself?”

“ It’s because I can’t bear the thought of losing you,” she whispers, tears forming yet again in her eyes.

“ Why?”

“ Because I love you, you idiot. That’s why!” she snaps, sounding annoyed with me. “ Sheesh…you’re ruining the moment.”

“ That’s…that’s what I’m good at, right?” I chuckle slightly, although it sent spasms off pain through me.  “ Why now?”

“ Because I don’t want to regret not doing it.”

“ I asked you, remember? And you said no.”

“ I said it was complicated.”

“ No, you didn’t.”

“ Yes, I did.”

“ No, you – “

“ Oh, shut up!” she says, half-laughing, half-crying. “ Let’s just enjoy the silence.“

“ Not exactly silent since there’s all this howling and snarling and things,” I comment, pointing to mutt-Thalia, who is observing us silently.

BOOM!

“ That wasn’t my cannon, was it?” I ask.

“ No, Percy. If it was, I’m going crazy for talking to a dead body and getting a response.”

“ Why aren’t there any choppers or anything? We’re the only living tributes right now,” I say, feeling extremely puzzled.

“ I don’t think they wanted two victors,” she says softly, caressing my hair. “ I think it was only done to have an exciting Games, what with us being the star-crossed lovers and all.”

“ Ah,” I breathe slowly. “ Why didn’t I think of that?”

“ Maybe because you’re a Seaweed Brain?”

“ Oh, shut up.”

( Meanwhile in the Districts…)

Third Person POV

District 12

“ No,” Prim whimpers. “ No!”

“ It’s going to be fine, Prim. He’s going to make it. He’s a fighter,” Mrs. Everdeen says, pulling into a hug. Trying to comfort her when she herself feels like breaking down.

“ He’s dying, Mother,” she sobs. “ He’s dying.”

Mrs. Everdeen couldn’t say anything. Percy’s ashen face is proof enough. He’s not going to make it, however much she wants to deny the fact.

Gale, on the other hand, looks at the screen, a hard look on his face, his lips pressed together so hard they’re nearly disappearing.

In the other districts…

“ Why are they not sending a chopper in? Save them both! They were the last two standing!” Several of them mutter to each other, glancing now and then at the Peacekeepers who are standing several feet away.

“ Are they actually going to let the boy die?” Another asks under his breath.

“ Wouldn’t surprise me. They always lie to us,” another replied darkly.

“ Two victors this year, they say. Believe us, they say.”

“ Save the boy! Save them both!” A woman’s voice cries out. She was immediately beaten unconscious by the Peacekeepers.

“ I can’t believe it! They’re letting the boy die!”

“ They don’t care about us, Maple. All they care is a good show.”

( Back in the arena … )

Percy’s POV

“ It’s getting a little bit colder,” I comment, shivering slightly.

“ They’ve probably made the arena colder,” Katniss says, though her tone wasn’t that sure. “ Here, take my jacket,” she adds, taking it off and covers me (and the sword hilt that is protruding out of my chest) with it. “ I’m not that cold.”

I put my hand on her cheeks, savoring the warmth it radiates. “ It’s just me, isn’t it? I’m the only one who’s feeling the cold. The arena is still warm like it was when the fire started, right?”

Tears again form in her eyes, falling bit by bit as she places her lips on my forehead.

“ Can you sing?” I’m not sure where that came from but I suppose that’s the only thing that matters to me now : music.

“ Sing?” she croaks, the tears now steadily falls on to my face.

“ Yeah. Like you did to Rue.”

“ Uh..okay,” she says, wiping at her tears again. “ But I’m not sure what song I should sing. Um…do you have any preference or anything?”

“ Do you remember the story your mom told you and Prim? The one where the girl has magical golden hair?” I ask, hearing my voice getting fainter.

“ Rapunzel,” she whispers.  “ Yeah. I remember it clearly.”

“ Can you….can you sing that song in that..in that story?” I ask, feeling dizzy as my vision swims in front of me.

She chuckles slightly. “ Is that your preference? Sappy, romance fairy tales told to children?” she asks, tracing a shape on my cheek.

“ Yeah. I’m sappy that way,” I smile.

“ I guess I’ll just have to get used to having a sappy ass guy like you around after this,” she says, sniffling.

“ Can you just start already?”

She rolls her eyes before starting the song :

Flowers, gleam and glow

   Let your powers shine

  Make the clock reverse

Bring back what once was mine

I could feel the numbness enveloping my chest now,  the icy feeling clenching at my heart. My vision is getting blurrier and her voice is getting fainter.

Heal what has been hurt

Nothing can be heal now.

A tear drops on to my face.

Change the Fates’ design

Nothing can be change now.

Save what has been lost

Nothing can be saved now.

Bring back what once was mine

The darkness envelops me.

What once was mine…
