Chapter 3: Men

Belle and Kate were laying on the open field, the compound obscuring the town's view.

Belle and Tony had left the lab a few moments after their talk and found everyone gathered in the common room.

Rhodes and Sam were arguing who did a better job on the exercise, Natasha and Steve were talking over future missions, Wand ahead gone back to get back some lost sleep due to nightmares, and Kate was pleading with Vision to make her more waffles.

Tony joined in the begging and Vision finally caved.

When Kate finished, her and Belle had gone outside, the latter only going for the piece and quite tee compound could never provide in the mornings.

Belle finished a chapter of her book and set it aside. She looked to see Kate had a sketchbook out and was drawing a nearby bird, sitting in one of the trees offering what little shade it could from the harsh sun. "Are we sure you and Gasston are related?"

"Sadly, yes. I paid for the DNA tests myself, all five of them."

"Ok, what's bothering you?"

Belle glanced up to see Kate's blue-grey eyes staring back, "What?"

"You only stop reading when something's bothering you."

Belle huffed, "Everyone in town thinks I'm weird."

"Yes, yes they do."

"And I can't for the life of me figure out why! Sure, I read more than the average person-"

Kate set down her sketchbook and stood up, "It's not so much they think you're weird, it's more their jealous of you."

"Huh?"

"Think about it. Your father is a billionaire, you are the smartest woman I know, and you live with the freaking Avengers."

Belle stood up, a puzzled look growing on her face, "But, you don't act like them? You don't think I'm odd?"

"Of course I do! Everyone in that compound does." She slung her arm around the bookworm, "And we love you for it. Sadly we're the only ones but-"

Belle wrapped her arms around the woman, "Thank you."

"Anytime." They sat in silence for a moment more before a grumble was heard from Kate. She stars down at her stomach, "I just fed you ten pounds of waffles! What is your problem?!"

Belle stood up and offered her hand, "C'mon, I saw some grapes in the fridge."

She helped pull Kate to her feet, "Alright, in getting hot anyways."

"That's what you get for wearing black."

"Shut it."

They neared the side of the compound when Kate stopped so abruptly Belle ran right into her, "What? What is it?"

"I smell desperation and gun powder." Kate ran to turn the corner leading to the front door.

"Can you even smell desperation?" Belle asked herself as she bounded up after her. When she caught up to Kate she peered over her shoulder and her eyes widened at the source. "Oh, no!"

It was Gaston, waiting outside the door trying to peer inside.

"What is he doing here?"

"How the hell should I know?"

"Your his sister!"

"That doesn't mean I can read his mind like Wanda!" He was starting to get impatient. He rang the door bell three more times. "Maybe we can run for it?"

As soon as she said that Gaston turned his head and came barreling towards them, "Belle!"

"Dammit." Belle glared at her, having Steve's same disapproval of her language.

"Gaston! What a pleasant surprise!" Sarcasm evident in her voice but he didn't seem to sense it.

"I've been looking for you!" Kate gave him a look, "What? I see you everyday. Anyways, Belle there isn't a girl in town who wouldn't want to be in your shoes. This is the day your dreams come true!"

Belle shook her head and passed him, "What could you know about my dreams, Gaston?"

He put his hands on her waist, "Plenty." She struggled in his grip, but it only tightened as he began to sing, "You've been dreaming just one dream, nearly all your life! Hoping, scheming just one theme, will you be a wife? Will you be some he-man's property?" He twirled her around to face him, "Good news! That he-man's me!"

He tugged her towards the side of the compound, Kate face-palming all he way. "This equation, girl plus man, doesn't help just you! On occasion women can, have their uses too! Mainly to extend the family tree." He dipped her, "Pumpkin, extend with me!"

Belle looked at Kate with pleading eyes and he picked her up and slung her over his shoulder, " We'll be raising sons galore."

"Inconceivable."

"Each built six foot- four."

"Unbelievable."

"Each one stuffed with every Gaston gene!"

"I'm not hearing this!" He set her down and Kate gave her an 'I am so sorry!' look. "You'll be serving house with pride!"

"Just incredible." She glowered.

"Each day gratified,"

"So unwedable!"

"That you are part of this idyllic scene." He slung his arm around her, "Picture this! A rustic hunting lodge, my latest kill roasting over the fire, and my little wife massaging my feet (she gags) while the little ones play on the floor with the dogs, oh we'll have six or seven."

"Dogs?" She asked hopefully.

"No Belle, strapping boys like me!"

"Imagine that!" She then ran as fast as she could towards the door, but Gaston caught her and tucked her under his arm, "I can see that we will share, all that love implies! We shall be the perfect pair, rather like my thighs!" He made we face him, "You are face-to-face with destiny! All roads, lead to, the best things in life are, all's well that ends with me."

She ran for it a final time but e jumped in her way, "Escape me? There's no way. Certain as do re," he bent down to one knee, "Belle when you marry- so Belle what'll it be? Is it a yes? Or is it oh, yes!"

Belle was stunned. This arrogant sexist man wanted to marry her?! "I just don't deserve you."

"Who does? Me!"

He turned back to see she had taken the opportunity to finally reach the door, "But thanks for asking." The door slammed shut behind her.

The sound of slow clapped made him turn to his sister, "Bravo! How long did it take you to make that up?"

"A week."

LeFou came bounding up the hill, panting in between breaths, "I got the minister *sigh* the cake *sigh* and the-"

Gaston cut him off, "There won't be a wedding LeFou."

The plump little man's jaw dropped, "She turned you down?!"

Gaston stomped over and grabbed LeFou by the neck, "I'll have Belle for my wife, make now mistake about that!"

"Whatever helps you sleep at night. Come on." Kate locked arms with her brother and pulled him away.

Kate pulled out her phone and LeFou slid in next to her, "Ordering another DNA test?"

"Yep."

When they made it far enough away Belle stepped back outside, "Can you imagine? He asked me to marry him! Me! The wife of that boorish, brainless-! Madame Gaston, can't you just see it? Madame Gaston his little wife. Agh! No sir! Not me! I guarantee it! I want much more than this provincial life!"

Belle took off running as far as she could go, her emotions steering her legs in every which way. She stood in the field, with the sun shining in her face, the wind in her hair, and poured her heart out, "I want adventure in the great wide somewhere! I want it more than I can tell." She sat down in the grass and picked a nearby dandelion. "And for once it might be grand. To have someone, understand. I want so much more than they've got planned."

She held out the dandelion in her palm and the wind carried the various seeds to new homes. There she sat, defeat and emptiness filling her body and mind.
