17 - Make it Stop

Ashley
"Just breathe Ashley, just breathe."

"Don't you think I'm trying!"

I gripped onto his forearm as another contraction rushed through my body.

"I'm sorry, but it just hurts so bad! Please Joe do something!"

He looked at me in despair as he looked down at my trousers, I felt myself looking down but he stopped me.

"Come on, let's get you to the trainers room."

"I don't think I can~"

Joe
I saw the blood on her trousers and I noticed her starting to look herself, I can't let her see this, I can't let her go through this again.

"Yes you can, don't focus on the pain just focus on walking..."

I looked back at my cousin Jey and saw the panic on his face.

"Joe what's wrong, what's going on?"

Her attention fell straight to her bloody trousers.

"No...no...NO! This can't be happening, make it stop. I don't want to lose this baby ~ I don't want to die...Joe PLEASE make it stop!!!"

Her tears flowed heavily down her face as she clung onto my shoulders, I wish I could promise her that it'll all be okay but I can't. She could lose her life and our baby could die, we could lose everything.

"Do you think we made the wrong decision? What if I should've gotten rid of this baby...I knew it was too good to be true."

"Don't say that, we made a good decision...we'll be okay Ash."

"Then why does it feel like this?"

I looked up at her and didn't have the answer she wanted, I don't know why this is happening to her now. We were going to prepare for a traumatic and early birth, but with me being on the road and Ashley being on bed rest we just didn't find the time to do so. We aren't prepared for this, we don't even have any clothes for our baby if he survives ~ she screams out in pain and her grip on me got harder.

"I'm sorry...I should've been more careful with the baby."

"Ashley look at me, none of this is your fault okay? We're just two good people, that bad things happen too. Ashley I just need you to hang on a little longer..."

All I need to hear is the sirens, I need them to save her, to help her. I can't lose her...I don't think I'll be able to do this without her. The door opens and I see our midwife with bags of equipment, Hunter runs over to help her carry it all to us.

"Right I need you to move Ashley, take her over more towards the door."

With the help of Jey we moved her over to the end of the canteen.

"I need you to put her on the table, I'm gonna have to try and get a look to see what's going on."

I could even hear the nerves in our midwifes voice as she ordered us to place Ashley on the table.

"I need someone to sit behind Ashley and push her up slightly, preferably not Joe as I'll need him to help me deliver."

Jey nodded and jumped up on the table, placing himself behind Ashley. She instantly grabbed his hand as another bloodcurdling scream ripped through the arena.

"Everyone except dad, move around to the other side."

They moved and we heard sirens, our midwife looked relived.

"Ashley talk to me, how does it feel?"

"Like it did with George, please...please make it stop."

She leant forward and pulled Ashley's bloody trousers off, followed by her underwear.

"Ashley try to relax for me."

She pulled out a machine and started to strap it around Ashley's bump.

"This is just going to measure, both you and baby's heart rate. I'm going to do an ultrasound now, so just take a deep breath in for me Ashley."

She applied the cool gel to her stomach before starting to look for our baby, I reached forward and took her hand in mine, if I knew this was going to happen I never would've let her go alone to her appointment today.

"Okay, I can see baby. He's in position to go, I just need to check how far dilated you are."

She moved away the ultrasound machine and pulled up her gloves.

"This will feel uncomfortable..."

Ashley
I scream in pain again, I want this to stop. I'm not ready to have a baby, not again.

"Okay your 10cm dilated...do you need to push?"

I nodded my head and she moved her arms into position.

"Okay push!"

I bit down on my tongue as I pushed.

"STOP! Ashley stop pushing..."

"Why?!?"

"The babies heart rate is significantly dropping when you push!"

The door opened and paramedics ran in.

"What's going on?"

Midwife
I stood up and ran to the paramedics.

"Whats going on?"

"I think the baby's umbilical cord is wrapped around its neck. We need to do an emergency c-section and we can't move her."

"What's the chance they both make it?"

"If we're lucky 50%?"

"We better get started then..."

I could see the fear, I could feel their fear in myself. We could lose Ashley and her baby, Ashley was the first mother who I lost a baby with, if I lose them both I think I might quit because the feeling is awful...
