CHAPTER 47
Arthit watched the three babies who were sleeping peacefully in their cradles. A small smile appeared on his face, both with happiness and sadness.
It has been 3 weeks since the babies have born. He still remembered how emotional he had become when he knew that his three babies was able to be rescued. And for his loved one, he had shed lots of tears. Remembering about Kongpob brought the awaiting tears fall down from his eyes.
Flashback......
It had been 3 hours since Kongpob had entered the delivery room and within those 3 hours, many of the nurses had rushed in and out of the delivery room in an emergency.
The only thing they could do at the moment was to pray for the four lives which were inside the theatre.
"Arthit please relax. Drink this water."
Knott came in towards Arthit with a small bottle of water in his hand.
Arthit looked towards the bottle and hesitated for a bit, he opened his mouth to say he doesn't want to drink but his friend already realizing his hesitation forced him to drink.
Arthit looked over at his both parents who were in deep discussion about the company matter.
After Kongpob's surgery started Wad had come towards him saying it was his fault that he was not with Kongpob.
Arthit knowing the reason told everyone the incident about Merlin and the real reason behind the cause of Kongpob's current state.
Both Kongpob's and Arthit's Mae were fuming in anger hearing all the story. They had made a decision to cut all the ties with RICS Company. They even decided to go meet Merlin at the police station later on.
Arthit was in no mood to speak or do anything. His full body felt limb. His only prayers to god were that his husband and the babies would be safe. He wouldn't be able to endure the pain of either one of them loose.
"Daddy!"
Arthit looked up from his foot toward the familiar sweet voice.
He saw his son running towards him, still on his school uniform.
"Aroon..."
Arthit called out in his shaky voice. His throat felt dry as he saw Aroon's wide smile.
"Daddy! Daddy! Grandpa told me that Mommy is going to deliver my sisters and brother! So, came straight towards here! Where is Mommy, Daddy?"
Arthit caressed his son's smooth silky hair and looked towards his Mae who assured him with a smile.
"Mommy is inside the operation room. We have to wait here, till your siblings come out, okay? So now stay quiet and we will wait for your little siblings!"
Aroon smiled and nodded enthusiastically before he jumped into Arthit's lap and sitting on his legs while hugging him.
Arthit smiled, even though it was a forced one. He caressed his son's back and looked at him with guilt filled eyes.
Arthit took a deep breath and sighed.
Just a few minutes later, the door of the delivery room shot opened revealing Priya with two babies in her hands.
All of the members in the room rushed towards Priya and looked over at the two babies in her arms.
Arthit got stunned in his place and looked over at the babies blankly. He felt so happy seeing his babies but the fear inside him of losing one of his babies and Kong vouchered inside him.
"Arthit here is your first child! The eldest of the three! It is a girl!"
Priya said as she handed over the said baby towards Arthit's hands.
Arthit unconsciously took the baby in his hand and stared at it with teary eyes. Just by seeing the peaceful sleeping face of the baby girl made him remind of Kongpob. She looked so much alike Kongpob and that thought brought more tears into his eyes.
Both Arthit's and Kongpob's parents smiled widely at the sight and rubbed the happy tears that were flowing from their eyes.
"And here you go your second child! It is a boy!"
Priya said and handed the sleeping baby boy into Arthit's hands as Kongpob's Mae took the baby girl from his arms.
Arthit looked at the baby boy in his arm and caressed his face softly. He chuckled as he saw the baby smiling through his sleep by the touch. The baby boy also looked so much alike Kongpob.
Both the baby girl and boy reminded Arthit of his love, his Kongpob. They had tanned skin and their features were analogous to Kongpob's. He could see Kongpob in them both.
He slowly rubbed his tears away by his other hand without allowing it to fall on the baby's face.
"Where is my other sibling Aunt Priya! You said it was triplets right!?"
Aroon asked enthusiastically as he looked over at his little brother who was in his Daddy's arms.
Everyone looked at Priya with fear in their eyes.
"Priya...."
Kongpob's Mae trailed off. She couldn't continue her words.
"I did say that we would only be able to save two babies if you choose the babies. But it is a miracle! We could save the third one too!"
"Nurse! Bring the baby here!"
Priya called out for the nurse from outside the Delivery room.
Soon a nurse came out and handed a white bundle into Priya's hands.
Everyone's face brightened up and tears of happiness started to flow from their faces.
Arthit was shocked hearing Priya. He mentally thanked all the gods for saving his three little angels.
"Arthit, here you go your third child! The youngest one of the three by ......... weeks! It is a girl!"
Arthit received the baby girl into his arms as he gave his baby boy into his Mae's hands.
Arthit smiled widely and kissed the baby's forehead as he closed his eyes, allowing his tears to fall.
"Thank you....thank you god for saving my three angels."
Arthit whispered into the thin air and he caressed his baby's face and smiled.
The baby girl looked so cute and elegant in the white bundle, she reminded him of the day Aroon had been in his arms for the first time. The baby girl's skin was so fair and white, just like his.
Arthit's happiness shattered down into pieces as he realized soothing was missing. He looked over at the three babies who were in his and his mothers' hands.
Arthit looked at Priya who stilled had her mask around her mouth.
"P'Priya.......my Kong"
Everyone's actions stopped at the moment they heard Kongpob's name.
All the pair of eyes looked at Priya with a lot of expectations along with fear.
Arthit started to grow impatient as Priya didn't reply. He gave the baby into his Pa's hands and looked at Priya.
"P'Priya! Please tell me! Where is Kong? How is he?"
Arthit bombarded Priya with lots of questions.
"Arthit, relax! Listen to me!"
Priya shook Arthit by holding his shoulders.
Arthit stopped his questions and looked at Priya with bloodshot eyes.
"I can't say anything about Kongpob now Arthit. We all tried our maximum to save both the babies and Kong. It is a miracle that both the babies and the mother are still alive. But........I can't still promise you about Kongpob, he hasn't still overcome the critical stage. We have to wait for the next 24 hours. So please wait"
Arthit slummed onto the floor as he heard the words form Priya. He was glad that his love was alive but at the same time feared washed over hi as the time ticked.
Kongpob's and Arthit's Mae cried on their husband's shoulder still while holding the babes in their arms. Wad and Tiya on the other hand, we're trying to act strongly by comforting the crying grandparents, while Knott and Pream helped Arthit to cool down.
Priya excused herself from the family telling she has to check on Kongpob. She also asked the nurses to take the babies back as they were pre-matured and have to be kept in the incubator.
Arthit cursed and blamed himself for what all had happened and prayed for his lover who was fighting with death and life inside the theatre.
Flashback ends............
Arthit smiled bitterly and wiped away his tears which was falling from his eyes.
He looked over at the three miracles of his life sleeping soundly in their cradles. It was just 4 weeks back Arthit started to get to hold their three babies properly in his arms after they were released from the incubators.
It was hard for Arthit to manage the three babies at the beginning since they won't stop crying. He knew that his three babies needed the warmth from their mother, but he couldn't give that to them at the current stage. He had sleepless nights looking after his two daughters and son. He really gave Kongpob a Nobel Prize from his heart knowing how hard it was for him to keep in check with Aroon when he was still a newborn baby. His tears fell from his eyes knowing Kongpob never disturbed his sleep when the Aroon cried in the middle of the night, his Kongpob was really a great man for him and will always be.
Arthit was helped by his two mothers to look after his babies, both during day and night. Arthit could clearly see the worry his mothers had for his husband but they never displayed it for Arthit to see, but Arthit knew it.
Arthit would visit the ICU every day, morning, afternoon and night to meet his beloved. His Kongpob. Kongpob had not yet awakened from his unconsciousness. There were times when Kongpob's heart rate would drop down but it would be seen improving after Arthit had touched his body.
It was one time Priya was talking about Kongpob's condition with both of them standing inside the ICU room. Kongpob's heartbeat suddenly dropped down and the machines started to make sirens. Priya quickly called the nurses and asked Arthit to move out, Arthit had only stood back outside after Priya shouted at him finally. He stood outside the door and kept an eye on his husband through the round glass on the door which helped him to see what was going on inside.
Kongpob's heartbeat was still not stable and Arthit could see Kongpob taking in huge gulps of air even when the oxygen mask was placed on his mouth. He could see Kongpob's chest rising up and down heavily while Priya was trying to cure the problem.
Arthit couldn't take it, he rushed towards his lower, breaking through the door and hugged his hands tightly. He hugged his husband's fragile body and kept on shouting to not leave him. Suddenly Kongpob's heartbeat came back to normal and he started to breathe normally.
Everyone in the room was shocked by the scene, even Arthit was shocked.
From that time onwards, Arthit was always been there near Kongpob and always spoke to him to fight for his life so that they all could live happily.
"Daddy!!"
A voice brought Arthit back to his senses, he wiped his tears away and held the boy who ran towards him from the door.
"Aw, my little superhero! How was school son!?"
Arthit asked his son as he tried his best to be strong in front of his son.
"It was great Daddy! I couldn't wait to come back here and see my cute sibling!"
Arthit's Pa who brought Aroon from his school chuckled seeing his grandson fully excited.
"But don't make so much noise son! Your baby sisters and brother had only slept an hour ago. We should not wake them up."
Aroon smiled and nodded his head.
Aroon got down from his Daddy's arms and took a peek over the three cradles with a wide smile.
"Wow! Daddy my baby sisters and brother look so cute in these outfits right?"
Aroon asked his Daddy who only nodded while smiling at him.
"Mommy sure does have a good taste!"
Aroon remarked while slowly caressing his siblings' faces.
Arthit smiled bitterly hearing the remark. He looked at his three babies and smiled widely. The three outfits that the babies were wearing was Kongpob's choice of dress. Kongpob really loved these three dresses and desperately wanted to see his three babies wear them once they were born.
Arthit had gone back to his home in need of some baby supplies and clothes, he found these three outfits neatly set on the babies' room which was newly designed for their arrival. He knew that Kongpob loved these outfits and he decided to make their babies wear it. At first, he was not permitted to make the babies were those dresses since they were newborn. But after two weeks he was allowed to change the babies' clothes.
"Aroon, we should go home and get your dress changed son. Come, grandma will come with you."
Kongpob's Mae's voice filled up the atmosphere in the hospital room.
Aroon who was admiring his three siblings pouted as he turned towards his grandma who called him.
"Arthit, son, Mae will go with Aroon na. Call your Mae if anything is needed, she is right outside your room."
Arthit nodded and looked back at his three babies.
He never hated his three babies for coming into this world by making his husband in this crucial state. He knew that it was not their fault that fate was not with his and Kongpob's side. He was happy to know that both his babies and Kongpob were fine, even though he was not sure when his lover was going to open his eyes.
Arthit looked dearly at his three babies with a bitter smile on his face.
"Daddy is sorry my babies. I am sorry that I couldn't give you the warmth of your Mommy for you. I am sorry that I couldn't take care of your Mommy well! Please forgive me!"
Arthit closed his eyes tightly as he said those words.
He looked over at his eldest daughter among them and smiled.
Just by seeing her, he could feel Kongpob was right beside him. She resembles Kongpob a lot. Her round eyes were just like his Kongpob, those dark brown eyes that he always love to stare at till the end of his time. Her skin was tanned like Kongpob's, a cute caramel skin that gave others the urge to meet her cute face again and again. The peach outfit that she wore gave her more cuteness, an outfit that Kongpob was dearly waiting to see his daughter with it.
Arthit's face suddenly turned towards his baby son's cradle as he heard soft crying sounds from it.
Arthit started to panic seeing his baby boy starting to cry, he quickly took the baby in his arms and tried to hush him. Arthit did not want his two other babies to wake up just because one among them woke up.
Soon, by the fatherly warmth of Arthit, the baby started to drift to his sleep again as the loud sobs turned to quiet sobs and then complete silence.
Arthit heaved a sigh of relief and planted a soft kiss on his son's forehead.
Arthit chuckled as he remembered how dramatic it was for Kongpob to select the outfit that their baby boy was wearing at the moment.
There were two pairs of those outfits, one was brown and the other was black. Kongpob couldn't decide which one was the right one to pick and he had thrown a tantrum on it when Arthit told him to choose anyone which he likes. Kongpob started bursting out telling it was not for him but for his baby boy and he wanted his baby boy to look cute in the outfit.
Arthit left out a small laugh as he remembered the scene.
The Baby was wearing the brown set of those outfits. The baby boy also resembled Kongpob a lot. He had tanned skin just like Kongpob's but his eyes were black rather than dark brown which didn't match up with Kongpob's but with Arthit's. His nose was long but round just like Kongpob's. Arthit chuckled as he remembered one of Kongpob's photo when he was a baby that Kongpob's Mae showed to him when they visited Kongpob's house. The baby was just looking the exact copy of how Kongpob was when he was a baby.
Arthit slowly placed the baby in the cradle hesitated before he started to move out of the hospital room in search of his mother so that he can pay a visit to his husband who was in the ICU.
"Mae?"
Arthit called out but didn't see anyone in front of his room. He looked around for a moment before he returned back inside the room since he didn't like the idea of leaving his babies alone in the room. He decided to wait until his mother shows up.
Arthit sat on the hospital bed sighing as he looked through the window with a blank face.
He didn't feel any interest to do anything. His felt as f his life was gone from him, he was just smiling for not making others upset about him. But from inside he was a living corpse.
If not for the babies he wouldn't be sitting here, he might have kept himself busy with all of his works or even sometimes he may take a long journey from all these situations.
He didn't want to leave his babies alone here. He wanted to replace Kongpob's place so that his babies will not lack the care of parents even though Arthit know that no one can replace Kongpob's place in the family.
Arthit sighed for the umpteenth time as he caressed the wedding ring which was in his right ring finger.
Arthit's ear pierced up as he heard small rustling sounds from one of the cradles.
He stood up chuckled when he saw his youngest baby girl trying to play with her own tiny soft legs and besides from that, she was fully awake.
Arthit walked towards her and took her in his hands.
The baby girl smiled as she started to take Arthit's nose in her tiny hands with a curious expression on her face.
"Hello, my little angel? Already awake huh? Your sister and brother are still sleeping soundly, why did you awake so early?"
Arthit talked to his daughter with a sweet voice while caressing her chubby white cheeks.
The baby looked around, diverting her gaze from her Daddy. She seemed like searching for something. Her hands moved to point at some places around the room.
"What are you searching for baby? Are you searching for your Mommy, dear?"
As soon as Arthit spit out the word 'Mommy', the baby turned around to meet her Daddy's face and a small smile was paying on her tiny lips.
"Sorry, Daddy can't show you your Mommy. Mommy is in another room na, he will come soon to meet you. Please wait for her and also pray for your Mommy to come to meet you fast"
Arthit told with disappointment filled in his voice.
He stared at his daughter who was playing with her legs in his arms. The baby girl looked so cute, just like his other two babies. She was different from her two other siblings. Her skin was pure white and she had round black eyes, just like Arthit's. She had dimples forming on her cheeks when she smiled and her nose was long, just like her Daddy's.
"Oon? Oh, the baby is already awake?"
A voice suddenly distracted Arthit from his thoughts.
He looked back and saw his mother walking towards her.
"Mae, where were you? I was looking for you so that I could go meet Kong."
"Oh, sorry son. I went with your Pa to the cafeteria for talking about some matters. And Pa is calling you, he has something to inform you about."
Arthit looked at his Mae confused as he heard that his Pa needs to meet him. He stood up slowly and handed over the baby girl into her grandma's arms gently with care.
"Ok Mae, I will meet Pa now. Just give her milk some Mae, she might be hungry."
Arthit's Mae smiled and nodded her head at Arthit's request.
*****************
"Pa? Mae told me that you called me."
Arthit spoke after he greeted his Pa who was sitting at the corner of the cafeteria, with a cup of tea in his hand , gazing out of the window.
"Take a seat son"
Arthit sighed as he took a seat opposite to his father.
There was a moment of silence between them before Mr.Rojnapath broke it.
"Oon, I want to tell you something related to Merlin."
Arthit's calmed expression suddenly changed into anger as he heard the name of the person who ruined his life.
"What about her?"
Arthit asked coldly.
"Oon I know how much trouble she had caused to you and it was her who was the cause of our Kongpob's state. But there was a reason behind it son."
"What reason pa? A reason that she loves me? Or that she wants me to be her husband? Are you trying to defend her Pa?"
Arthit talked back with his voice a little raised. He didn't understand why his father was trying to talk like as if he was defending Merlin.
Mr.Rojnapath sighed as he called a person who was sitting just a table across from them.
Arthit looked at the old man who was moving towards their table and seated between him and his father.
"Swadeep kharp Khun Arthit, Khun Rojnapath. Khun Arthit, I know you don't know me so I may take initiative in introducing myself. I am the father of the person who you hate the most in your life now, precisely, I am Merlin's father."
Arthit's face darkened as he head that the person in front of him was Merlin's father.
"Why are you here Khun? Shouldn't you be with your criminal daughter who is jail now?"
"Oon! Talk respectfully!"
Mr.Rojnapath scolded his son.
Arthit looked back at his Pa with rage-filled eyes as he spoke.
"Respectfully?! I should speak respectfully to the person who is the Father of the criminal who brought my life into a mess? Pease Pa! What are you really trying to do here?"
The old man who was looking at the scene in front of him cleared his throat and took a deep breath before he spoke.
"I know you hate my daughter tremendously and I don't blame you b=for that Khun Arthit. And for your information, Merlin is not in the jail now. She is admitted in the mental hospital."
Arthit gasped as soon as he heard the last words of the old man. She looked at his Pa with a blank expression who only nodded his head.
"I have one daughter and one son. Merlin and Max, they both are my only treasures. I have built up this whole company for them. I had great hopes in them but...."
The old man's words trailed off as he took his hand to wipe the tears that were threatening to fall from his eyes.
Arthit and his Pa carefully listened to the man's words without any interruptions.
"Merlin's mother died in a car accident when she was 12 years old. Merlin was standing in the middle of the road in front of the park near our apartment to take the ball which she was playing with. A car was coming in high speed towards her and my wife who saw it rushed towards Merlin and pushed her away from the middle of the road. But unfortunately, the car hit my wife. She died in front of Merlin causing trauma in my little daughter."
Arthit felt pity for Merlin as he heard about the incident in her life, but the anger in him for Merlin for leading his husband to the present condition never faded away.
"This was not only the case, just after 4 years. When she was of 16 years, her younger brother, Max, also died in front of her by falling from the top of the stairs while both of them were fighting for something. Merlin was really traumatized by both of these incidents. She locked herself in the room for several months. After so much persuasion from me and her grandma, she finally decides to return to her school to continue her studies. She was like a living corpse. A body without any feeling, she didn't go out with her friends anymore nor did she speak to anyone. But this all changed when she was at her 2nd year in university."
The old man took a deep breath before he recollected the memories of the incident that completely changed his daughter's life forever.
"When Merlin was in her 2nd year in engineering, a guy named Rayan started chasing her. At first, she didn't like being chased, she scolded Rayan for chasing her and asked him to leave her alone since she was not fond of relationships after her brother's death. But Rayan was a stubborn boy. He chased and chased her until she started to fall for him. At the end of their 2nd year, Rayan and Merlin started dating."
"We got back our old Merlin from that moment onwards. The Merlin that was always smiling and liked to tease others. The Merlin who liked to prank others and play a lot. The Merlin who loved to show her interest in her dressing. We got her back after Rayan came to her life. I was really thankful to him. Their relationship grew bolder day by day. But all changed after they got engaged when Merlin was 24 years old. Two weeks after their engagement a truck hit the car that Merlin and Rayan were having their journey in. Merlin was able to be rescued after two surgeries but Rayan lost his life. After hearing about the news of her fiancé's death, Merlin changed completely into another person."
" She lost her mental stability. She tried committing suicides several times but we were able to save her. She started to make crazy noises and moves all around the house like a mad person. We had to admit her in the mental hospital then. She was admitted there for 5 years and finally, we got our Merlin back. But not as bright as our old Merlin. She smiled at others but not many interactions with people, she was fully concentrated on our company and wanted to lead our company to its highest positions."
The old man who was speaking with his head hung low turned towards Arthit suddenly.
"I tried to make her date someone over these fast years but she didn't agree with it. Whenever I mentioned about dates, her expression changes and an angry Merlin can be seen in front of us. But, after so many years, it was now that Merlin finally found in love. She falls in love with you Arthit. I don't know anything about these because I was in Singapore this 2 years because of one of my treatments for my left hand, my left hand was half paralyzed because of some issues with the blood vessels and I had to take treatment for it. It was just a day before yesterday I came back here and I got this news from my secretary."
" I am sorry Khun Arthit for all these troubles. I know now why she fell in love with you. You have great similarity with Rein, which might be the reason why she loves you Arthit. I went to see her the day I came back. I went to the mental hospital and she was talking to herself in the hospital room, with messy hair and an unreadable expression on her face."
The old man wiped his tears from his eyes and took Arthit's hand in his who was shocked by all the news.
"I am really sorry Arthit for all the troubles you have faced. I don't know how much I should apologize to you on behalf of Merlin. I don't know what was in her mind when she caused these issues but what my heart is telling is that, she loved you Arthit but deep inside she saw you as Rein and didn't want to lose him again so she tried to win you over by dismissing all her boundaries in between and your husband was one of them. Please don't blame my daughter for all these incidents and please don't hate her. This was not her true self who did this, it was her trauma and mental illness that was buried inside her for long years. I am sorry Arthit, please forgive my daughter, I beg you."
Arthit was stunned by all the information that he just registered into his mind. His heart and mind were in a mess. He didn't know what to speak or what to do. He understood that Merlin didn't do anything intentionally but the fact that his babies and his husband were in danger because of her haunted his mind. Half of him wants to forgive Merlin but the other half was against it.
Arthit took a deep breath and placed his hand on top of the old man's hand who was begging for his forgiveness.
"Sir, please stop begging me. I am also in fault in this. I didn't know about Merlin's past and I spoke disrespectfully towards you. I greatly apologize for it, Sir. I cannot speak lie to you, so please, I apologize you if I offend you. I know that everything that happened was caused by Merlin's mental state but I really can't forget the dilemma she had put me into. I am really sorry about that, but I will try to forgive her that I now know what was the real reason between her actions."
There was a moment of silence between the three men who were sitting at the table.
Arthit left out a puzzled sigh as he spoke.
"I almost lost my babies and my husband because of the quandary she had caused. It was a great miracle that I got my babies and Kongpob back in my life. But even after giving birth to our babies, Kongpob has not still recovered from his comatose stage. It was a great miracle I got my most important persons in my life back. I won't be able to wipe out the incident that Merlin caused in my life, but I will try my best to forgive her. Please give me some time."
Arthit spoke with a bitter smile on his face.
Merlin's father let out a sigh of relief and smiled sincerely at Arthit.
"I know Khun Arthit. I understand your feelings. Thank you for giving me your time to listen to my words. It really means a lot for me. Thank you for at least trying to forgive my daughter. I may take my leave now Khun Arthit and Mr.Suttilak. I will pray for your husband's recovery. May God bless your family Khun Arthit."
Arthit smiled and stood up as Merlin's father started to leave.
He looked back at his Pa ho was smiling apologetically to Arthit.
"Pa, I am sorry I was not able to control my emotions. I really felt distressed."
Mr.Rojnapath stood up from his seat and hugged his son.
"I know my son, please don't apologize to me. Everything will be okay now. Our Kong will come back to us again Oon, don't worry."
Arthit hugged back his Pa tightly and buried his face on his Pa's shoulder as he nodded his head.
"Thank you, Pa! I may take my leave now, I want to visit Kongpob."
Mr.Rojnapath released his hug and patted his son's shoulder before Arthit disappeared from his view.
*****************
Arthit was walking towards the ICU with a lot of matters in his mind. Arthit remembered how Kongpob would easily find out if Arthit's mind was in a mess or if he had any problems in his mind. Arthit missed his husband's warm and sweet hugs that Kongpob would give to him after Arthit spoke out all the complications in his mind. He missed the sweet smile on Kongpob's face that would turn out a dark night into a bright day.
He missed everything about his Kongpob.
He missed his husband.
Arthit sighed as memories of his time with his husband came into his mind.
"ARTHIT!!!"
A loud shout from someone woke up Arthit from his deep thoughts as e moved towards the ICU.
He looked at Priya who came dashing out from the ICU room with a tensed face.
"Arthit! Kongpob! He...."
