Chapter 94: Weekly Dinners
Demetrius escorted Mia back to her room at the opera house. After he had kissed her goodbye, he went home himself, as he was exhausted from the events of that day. He was about to go to sleep when there was a soft knock on his door. He told the person on the other side to enter.
"Demetrius," Athena said as she entered the room. "There's something I would like to ask you."
"Yes. What is it, dear sister?" Demetrius asked.
"Do you...like Mia? Romantically, that is."
"Well, I did asked her to marry me tonight."
"Did she say yes?"
"I'm afraid not."
Athena embraced her brother. "It's going to be okay."
Demetrius laughed. "Athena, Mia and I are dating. I'm alright."
"Can I be honest?"
"Always."
"I'm glad that Mia rejected your proposal."
Demetrius was tempted to become enraged at this. He, however, decided against it and instead asked her why she was happy about such an unfortunate occurrence.
"Because, if you got married, you would move out. I would miss you terribly. That's all," the girl explained. "Well, I best be off to bed."
"Wait just a minute," Demetrius said, before his sister could leave the room.
"What is it?"
Demetrius pulled his sister onto his lap. "Listen, I will have to move out when I get married, but that doesn't mean that I won't be here when you need me."
Athena laughed. "Thank you, Demetrius. I appreciate it. I just miss you. We hardly get to spend time together."
"We'll figure out a way to fix that. In the meantime, you should get some sleep. Goodnight, Athena."
"Goodnight, Demetrius."
The next day, the entire family was to gather together for a weekly dinner. You see, when Gustave moved out with his family, and Catherine and hers shortly after, it was decided that every week, the family would get together and have dinner. Every week, each household got the chance to host. The first dinner was at Erik and Christine's, the second at Gustave and Bella's, the third at Pierre and Catherine's, and in this way, the duty rotated from household to household.
Apollo and Aphrodite always liked it when dinner was held underneath the opera house, for they enjoyed seeing everyone back home. It reminded them of old times.
This week's dinner was in fact being held in the catacombs.
Apollo and Aphrodite had been missing Demetrius very much lately. It was difficult for them to not see him every day like they used to. Though they saw him quite frequently, the twins still felt that Demetrius had missed so much in their lives.
That night, the twins talked incessantly to Demetrius about their new love interests and things like that. In turn, Demetrius told him about his rejected proposal to Mia. They were about to comfort him, when he held up a hand to silence them.
Demetrius explained, "Mia is my girlfriend. We have decided to take things slow until she is ready to advance to marriage and other things."
"Other things?" Apollo teased.
"Yes, other things. Like, kissing in public," Demetrius added.
"Ah, that makes sense," Apollo said with a chuckle as he winked at his twin sister.
Demetrius quickly changed the topic of conversation by asking, "Aphrodite, did you really ask Vincent on a date? That's quite scandalous."
"Scandalous? How?" She questioned.
"I thought that girls were supposed to be the ones to get asked on dates," was his reply.
"Yes, it may not be what society deems 'normal'. However, I don't care."
"The heck with society," Apollo agreed. "Do things as you wish."
"We Destlers have never really gone for conventional relationships, now, have we?" Demetrius asked with a laugh.
"I should say not," Aphrodite laughed.
Christine entered the room that held the three laughing young adults. "What is the meaning of this?" She asked with a smile.
"Oh, just finding humor in our family's romantic history," Apollo replied.
"Yes, very unconventional indeed," Christine agreed. She left the young people to their laughing.
The night was a very enjoyable one for the Destler family. They loved spending time in each other's company. It was such a shame that they had to be separated at the end of the night, but alas, all good things must come to an end. Or in their case, that night's associations had to come to an end.
