Chapter 84: Reunited
Two days later, Gustave and his family moved back into the catacombs with the rest of the family. It was difficult moving all of their things back in, but after a little while, they were successful in their task.
They were all happy for the move. Finally, the family was back together again and Erik was pleased.
"Dear, are you alright?" Christine whispered to Erik. "You're smiling."
"I've never been better," he replied. He picked up his wife and swung her around.
"Erik! What's gotten into you?" Christine laughed.
"Joy. Joy and love and happiness. Christine, I haven't felt like this in years, and you know what? I like this feeling. Let's celebrate!" Erik exclaimed.
The family celebrated by gathering around the piano and singing and laughing. All had a joyous time. Nobody even remembered why they left in the first place.
The next day, Gustave was reunited with Lucas, and Demetrius went to go and reunite with Mia. The young boy still remembered which room was hers.
"Up the stairs, take to rights, and it's the first door on the left," Demetrius reminded himself. He reached the door and knocked. It was opened by an unfamiliar, young girl. He began, "Hello. I'm looking for Mia Taylor. I-"
"She no longer lives here," the stranger replied, shutting the door in Demetrius's face.
"Doesn't live here?" Demetrius thought. "How she be gone? How could she leave without telling me? Where has she gone? How did I manage to lose to only friend I ever had?"
Suddenly a voice came from down the hallway. "Demetrius? Demetrius Destler, is that you?"
The boy spun around. "Mia?"
The girl flew into Demetrius's arms. "I missed you!"
"I missed you too. I'm sorry that we moved out. I didn't want to leave you. I truly didn't."
"Shh. You're here now. That's all that matters. I have my best friend back."
"And I have mine."
Mia asked Demetrius if they could return to the catacombs together. He said that they could and off they went. They walked down the dimly lit hallways and staircases, their fingers interlocking the entire journey.
They arrived in Demetrius's room and began to act out parts of various Shakespearean plays. Both were not very skilled when it came to acting, so they spent most of the time laughing at their nonexistent talent.
Later, Mia and Demetrius joined Apollo and Aphrodite. Apollo and Demetrius ran off to do God knows what, leaving Mia and Aphrodite alone. After a moment of silence, Aphrodite asked Mia if she had feelings for Demetrius.
"What?" Mia asked. She was completely taken aback by the question.
"Do you have romantic feelings for Demetrius?" Aphrodite repeated.
"Demetrius? No, we're just friends. He's not my type."
"Not you're type? What exactly is your type?"
"I'm not exactly sure. I just know that Demetrius isn't it."
Meanwhile, Apollo had asked Demetrius the same question about Mia.
Demetrius replied, "Mia? No way. We're just friends. Nothing more."
"Come on. I see the way you look at her. You totally like her," Apollo insisted, nudged his nephew lightly.
"Apollo, trust me when I say that I don't have romantic feelings for Mia. She is my best friend. Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going to take her back to her room," Demetrius said as he departed.
Mia was then escorted back to her living quarters by the dashing young man. He looked so handsome in the candlelight. Mia, for the first time, wondered if it was possible for her to have feelings for Demetrius. Was it really so crazy? Her thoughts were interrupted when Demetrius began to speak. Not hearing him at first, Mia asked, "Sorry, what did you say?"
"When I went to your room, it was opened by a strange girl who said that you didn't live there," Demetrius repeated. "Care to explain?"
"That's Jane. I switched rooms with her a month ago," Mia exclaimed. "I thought I had told you."
"You didn't. When she said that you no longer lived there, I thought she meant that you no longer lived here at the opera house. I thought that you had left for good without saying goodbye."
"I would never leave you."
"Good. I promise that I'll never leave you again."
"I'm glad," Mia said as they arrived at her door.
Demetrius gave the girl a gentle kiss on the cheek. "Goodnight, Mia."
